Reserves Rookie Review – Round 10

Written by Alza on May 26 2021

Welcome back to the Reserves Rookie Review for Round 10. Plenty of action this week with only Collingwood having a bye. Let me know if there is anyone that you think should be included. The criteria I usually base it off of is teams selected by, scoring and if they have played AFL this season.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
Norwood 12.20.92 def. Adelaide 6.8.44

Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF/FWD – 21 disposals (8 kicks), 5 marks and 6 rebound 50s – 70 (66/7)

Verdict: Worrell the only real relevant player here as he continues to be a steady contributor in defence. O’Connor was an unused sub

PORT ADELAIDE
Port Adelaide 13.8.86 def. North Adelaide 11.12.78

Martin Frederick $172.6k DEF – 29 disposals (14 kicks), 6 marks, 3 clearances and 4 inside 50s – 101 (79/2)
Sam Hayes $123.9k RUC – 14 disposals (8 kicks), 8 marks (3 contested) and 35 hitouts – 93 (80/6)
Taj Schofield $102.4k MID – 16 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 2.0, 3 marks, 2 clearances and 4 inside 50s – 65 (69/6)

Verdict: Freddy had a great game coming down into the reserves and put his hand up for a recall. Hayes and Schofield also had good games looking for a debut, one that Hayes could get soon as a backup to Ladhams. Bergman was an unused sub

VFL

BRISBANE
Brisbane 12.8.80 def. by Richmond 21.16.142

Tom Fullarton $164.8k RUC/FWD – 18 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 3.3 and had 8 hitouts – 82 (82/5)
Connor Ballenden $146.1k FWD – 12 disposals (all kicks), 4 marks and 10 rebound 50s – 52 (90/5)
Nakia Cockatoo $123.9k MID/FWD – 12 disposals (6 kicks), 3 marks and laid 3 tackles – 51 (47/4)
Tom Joyce $123.9k FWD/MID – 31 disposals (12 kicks), 4 marks and 4 inside 50s – 89 (94/2)

Brock Smith $123.9k DEF – 23 disposals (19 kicks), 6 marks and had 7 rebound 50s – 84 (72/5)
Carter Michael $102.4k MID – 15 disposals (9 kicks), 4 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 56 (88/5)

Verdict: Fullarton bounced back after a couple a quieter games with a team high 3 goals. Joyce’s 2nd game back was great with a team high 31 touches but Ballenden and Michael weren’t quite up to the standards they have set so far. Cockatoo continues to do bits and pieces after a long injury lay off

CARLTON
Carlton 6.10.46 def. by Box Hill 19.16.130

Luke Parks $181.6k DEF – 12 disposals (10 kicks), 8 marks, 6 tackles and 5 rebound 50s – 79 (79/1)
Lochie O’Brien $180.5k MID – 21 disposals (17 kicks), 6 marks, 6 inside 50s and 5 rebound 50s – 84 (74/5)
Josh Honey $123.9k MID/FWD – 11 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 2.0, 7 marks and laid 6 tackles – 88 (78/5)
Brodie Kemp $123.9k MID – 17 disposals (13 kicks), 8 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 76 (76/1)
Sam Ramsay $123.9k MID – 23 disposals (16 kicks), 5 marks and laid 3 tackles – 89 (77/5)

Verdict: Great games by all here in their big loss. Parks pushed his case to come straight back up while Kemp had his 1st game of the season

COLLINGWOOD
Bye

ESSENDON
Essendon 11.4.70 def. by North Melbourne 12.13.85

Ned Cahill $161.2k FWD – 14 disposals (7 kicks), 3 marks and laid 7 tackles – 70 (82/5)
Tom Hird $123.9k MID – 11 disposals (10 kicks) and laid 3 tackles – 50 (61/5)
Nick Bryan $123.9k RUC – 24 disposals (15 kicks), 5 marks, 4 each of inside and rebound 50s, 43 hitouts and gave away 5 frees (2 for) – 116 (93/4)

Verdict: Cahill and Hird had down games by their standards but Bryan was fantastic with 24 touches and 43 hitouts against the slightly more experienced Xerri

GWS GIANTS
GWS Giants 11.9.75 def. Port Melbourne 9.12.66

Conor Stone $162k FWD – 15 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 71 (57/3)

Kieren Briggs $123.9k DEF/FWD – 26 disposals (18 kicks), kicked 0.2, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 10 inside 50s, 45 hitouts and 5 frees for – 160 (108/4)
Will Shaw $102.4k DEF – 16 disposals (13 kicks) and took 7 marks – 71 (46/5)

Verdict: Bruhn injured his groin early in the 2nd quarter so he could’ve gone huge having had 5 shots already. Shipley keeps scoring well and would be eyeing a return but it’s hard to fit into the GWS midfield even with their injury list. Briggs dominated the ruck with 26 touches and 45 hitouts which should see him return to partner Flynn if Mummy has a rest although Leon Cameron may have other ideas

GEELONG
Geelong 15.15.105 def. Coburg 7.6.48

Ben Jarvis $139.2k DEF/FWD – 17 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 2.2 and took 4 marks – 81 (75/5)

Nick Stevens $117.3k DEF – 15 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks and 5 inside 50s – 66 (73/4)

Verdict: Jarvis and Brownless continue to put their hands up for AFL selection but as I’ve said before it will be hard for them to string games together with the list that Geelong have. With players like Constable, J. Clark, Jenkins and Stanley all playing in the reserves

GOLD COAST
Southport 17.14.116 def. Gold Coast 5.3.33

Jeremy Sharp $141.8k MID – 27 disposals (18 kicks), kicked 1.0, 7 marks and 8 rebound 50s – 104 (91/4)
Jez McLennan $123.9k DEF – 20 disposals (11 kicks), 9 marks and 4 rebound 50s – 78 (68/4)
Alex Davies $102.4k MID – 17 disposals (7 kicks) and laid 3 tackles – 58 (62/5)
Aiden Fyfe $102.4k DEF/MID – 27 disposals (22 kicks), 7 marks and 10 rebound 50s – 97 (79/5)

Verdict: Sharp and Fyfe were among the best in a big loss and are putting together strong seasons so ones to keep an eye on, especially Fyfe as he is a loophole for over 15% of coaches

BOX HILL HAWKS (HAWTHORN)
Carlton 6.10.46 def. by Box Hill 19.16.130

Keegan Brooksby $206.9k RUC/FWD – 20 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.2, 8 marks, 3 tackles and 20 hitouts – 112 (84/6)

Jack Saunders $102.4k MID/FWD – 14 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 2.2, 4 marks, 4 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 83 (53/4)

Verdict: Brooksby had his best game of the season but you would imagine he is behind Ceglar and now Reeves in the rucking order. Jeka was great again clunking 13 marks. Downie had one of his better games with 16 touches while Saunders was the pick of the small forwards kicking 2 goals and laying 4 tackles

CASEY DEMONS (MELBOURNE)
Casey 12.13.85 def. Sydney 6.9.45

Verdict: Hunter continues to perform in the reserves with 42 hitouts. Ratten stated that he is prepared to send guys back to the VFL so he could be a chance to come in and help Paddy Ryder. Highmore was an unused sub but with their huge loss is a big chance to return

SYDNEY

  1. Cheers, Alza.

Would be great to see Wehr and A. Fyfe get a run at it and Hutchings will return as soon as match fit – all would be timely SC inclusions. Meanwhile it looks like Brockman’s done, ugh.

    1. Thanks GD!
Definitely nice to see some new rookies come through. Maybe not he did kick 2 goals but only had the 2 tackles. If they keep losing they’ll have to change something up surely

  2. Thanks Alza.

This is fast becoming a must read every week.

I picked Saunders as a loop, It would be fantastic if he could slot in to the Hawks line up after their Bye. I need all the warm bodies as possible for R13-14.

Hard to know with the Pies having the Bye, but the McCreery injury may open the door for Murphy or Fyfe to get another run in the seniors.

    Hey GD.

Wehr must be a chance with OKeefe out for the season, Buckley a Test, and Sam Taylor going down for a long stretch.
He seems to be the only “tall” defender left in their list.
They did play Briggs in OKeefe’s defender / Second ruck role a few weeks ago. I think Flynn or Mummy were rested.
Anyway I hope the give him a go.

    Thanks again Alza great stuff!

    1. Yep, would be great to see him slot in.

Can’t think of many other DEF rookies that’ll get a run besides him. Maybe Worrell and Bianco? Grainger-Barrass late? But that’s probably it.

Anyway, we’ll see. Fingers crossed on Wehr.

      Catch ya, FT.

  3. Thanks FT, love to hear that.
Wehr did pick up an injury during the week and didn’t play VFL (listed as a test this week) on the weekend but he wouldn’t be far off a debut.
You’re right there isn’t many and even the ones that come in will likely be short term. Brock Smith from Brisbane, Shaw from GWS and Ling/Gould from Sydney.
