2018 Rookie Review – Round 13

Written by Huttabito on June 19 2018

Just a short sweet one this week as I write this pool side in Bali with a Bintang next to me. Looking at my team here is slightly more manageable as with the cold, wet and windy weather that Perth is currently serving up – I would be far more depressed.

Richards ran up and down the wing collecting 15 disposals (7 kicks) at 67% DE but managed to sneak forward on occasions and helped himself to a team high 3 goals. It was otherwise a quite night with 2 tackles and 3 1%ers but it was enough for 99 points which was a handy addition for his 12k owners.

Doedee has timed his run well and dropped just $11k this week from 59 points and with his bye can be safely moved on. Will go down as one of the best rookies for the year but 5 clangers and a DE of 57% against the Hawks sours his end.

Austin had his first full game with Brown in the side and as feared, was held back to just 54 points from 11 disposals (5 kicks) and 3 marks. One would think Brown would free him up so who knows!

Rice was concussed just after half time and was stretchered off finishing on 46 points. The score is a little generous considering he only had 3 effective disposals, 3 marks a tackle and 2 1%ers. Silver-lining being he now has he bye and will have two weeks to recover.

Garthwaite was the 3rd highest point per minute defender rookie over the JLT (eclipsing Doedee/Finlasyon) and made his senior debut this week after being a late inclusion. Very tidy first game with a team high 9 1%ers to go with 9 disposals (6 kicks) at 100% DE, 3 marks and 4 tackles for 71 points. Has the bye this week.

Brander made his debut too but just had the 5 disposals (all kicks) and 3 marks for 25 points. Will need to see more next week.

Goodbye for now: Doedee, Mirra, Coffield and Keeffe

Holman has been quite handy over the last month and an 84 point game against the Saints during a carnage bye round just adds to it. Played more forward but it didn’t matter given the opponent and he kicked 2 goals from 14 disposals (7 kicks) at 79% DE to go with 2 marks and 5 tackles.

Giro was given an extended run through the midfield this week and collected 17 disposals (8 kicks) at 82% DE for 66 points. His score was held back as he had 15 uncontested possessions but his pressure on the ball was great and laid 5 marks to go with 3 marks and 2 goal assists. The bye has probably come at a good time for someone like him as he can freshen up after his first 3 senior games as he did slow down as the game went on.

Ronke just beat his breakeven to continue his cash generating with 84 points from 13 disposals. He had a team second low disposal efficiency (54%) and relied on 5 marks (1 contested), 4 tackles and 2 goals for his score. Will continue to make money post bye if you don’t need the extra warm body this week.

The Apeman that is Apeness collected 10 disposals (3 kicks) at 90% DE and 70% contested to go with 8 hitouts, 4 marks (3 contested), 3 tackles, 3 1%ers and a goal for a career best 86 points.

Flyin’ Ryan was back after his extended period on the sidelines with an ankle injury and kicked 1 goal, 2 behinds from his 12 disposals. He unfortunately had a team high 5 clangers to go with a team low disposal efficiency (33%) and he relied on 3 marks (all contested) and 2 tackles to help his score tick over to 45 points. His two scores against Sydney this year are 38 and 45 – expect him to turn it around the next two weeks and possibly replicate his scores in Rd2/3 against Essendon and a injury riddled Adelaide.

Poholke, for scoring 29 points just after I congratulated him last week for his 83 points…

Battle kicked 3 goals in his third AFL game on the weekend (after 2 in his second and 1 in his first) from 12 disposals (7 kicks) at 67% DE for 64 points. He took 2 marks (1 contested) and laid 3 tackles for the game and will come off the bye on the bubble.

Wilson made his senior debut after being picked up in last years rookie draft and was immediately traded in by a couple of thousand coaches trying to avoid a donut and was dished up 34 points from 12 disposals and 5 marks.

    1. My understanding is that the Demons like him as Lever’s replacement, so he should play out the season.

But that’s just what I have heard here on SCT. Perhaps someone with more inside knowledge of Melbournce FC could shed some light on this?

        1. Sadly, I have no inside or other info on what the Demons are planning. I just run numbers and talk about theory stuff. Well, and blither, some weeks a lot of blithering.

  1. Nice work Hutta. I’m going with the obvious choice of Ahern this week, and then hold fire on the two new defs until they’re on the bubble next week. Hopefully one of them has a big game this week and makes deciding between the two an easy decision!
