2UP: MAR 2

Written by Schwarzwalder on March 9 2018

The horror……the horror…….can you imagine an SCT website without the Thumbs U/D function?  That harrowing experience was brought upon us during the pre-season of 2016.  But….as they say…..the day is darkest before the dawn 😉  With the return of the ‘Thumbs’, Thommo’s 2UP arose from the ashes and has been a handy tool for Coaches ever since.

If you can’t split two players or a combination of players, enter them into the Forum and the SCT Coaches will guide you in the right direction………

  1. I think I really want Oliver (613k) in my team, but I’m struggling to drop someone to fit him in. The two it’s down to are Fyfe(598k) or Kelly (628k)for Oliver….Help please.

    TU Do it Fyfe out
    TD Do it Kelly out.

Or see next post Don’t do it (TU)

  2. I really want to have Ryder in my team but i will only take him if i can have a R3 that will cover. Cameron is looking like he could fill that R3 position nicely. But if he makes round 1 will he still be there after 10 rounds is a massive question. Tonights game will be a big factor in this, so do I

TU Take the punt on Ryder/Cameron if Cameron is named round 1

TD Play safe and go with someone like Jacobs and just accept I will have to miss out on Ryder or burn a trade after byes.

    1. I’m going with Ryder and accepting the donut. I’m backing him to make up the points across the rest of the season. If by chance Cameron plays in round 10, then it’s a bonus.

  3. Premo team set up.

    T/U- D-3, M-6, R- 2, F-3
    T/D – D-4, M-5, R-2, F-3

Comment – any other combo you think is better.

    1. Assuming you count breakout candidates, this is what mine looks like at the moment:

D-4, M-4, R-2, F-5/6 (depending on whether or not you count Christensen).

      1

      2
  4. Midfield

T/U .. Dangerfield, Martin, Mitchell J Kelly, Fyfe, Coniglio Brayshaw, Barry, ( Banfield, T Kelly, Holman )

T/D .. Martin, Mitchell, J Kelly, Fyfe, M Crouch, Cripps, Brayshaw, Barry ( Banfield, T Kelly, Holman ) + $80k approx in the bank

  5. So with ruck issues, shared ruck, good supporting midfield, injury prone etc.
TU:nank is possibly a very good choice?
TD:will be serviceable, but not top 4 material.

    6

    18
  6. Do we trust Yeo yet?

TU: Yes, he’ll be a top defender.
    TD: He’s called Yeo-Yeo for a reason/I don’t trust Adam Simpson.

    6

    19
    1. Yeah I trust him in that he’ll be around the mark of the top 6 defenders and average around the low to mid 90s, but I don’t feel that he will back up his 102 average solely due to his position change to the midfield, even it is only minor, he scores most of his points from cheap marks and intercept possessions. For me, there is just more value elsewhere, and this combined with his inconsistent nature just rules him off for me. 😉

      1. He’s a top 6 defender but he does tend to Yeo-Yeo so I’m planning on picking him up on a dip in his price cycle.

  7. Rory Lobb got through a NEAFL practice match unscathed yesterday. Will he line up in round 1?

    TU: Yes
    TD: No

If you voted no, feel free to comment on when you think he will play.

tu – kreuzer and barry/kelly (on field). banfield on bench
td – jacobs and dow/LDU (on field). kelly and barry on the bench. dont think i trust dow or LDU to get them in anyway

  9. other on-field fwds: heeney, billings, smith, w. rioli, fristch
    tu – conglio, kreuzer, christensen.
td – kelly, jacobs, fwd rookie (keefe).

  10. not sure where to ask this but thoughts are appreciated
whats everyone doing with teams named on sunday? lots of key rookies may be named on extended benches.

    1

    1
  11. TU: Walters to improve on last years average to get closer to the 95 mark
TD: His few big scores have just skewed his average, not buying into him as a top 8 forward

    4

    6
  12. wont know if keeffe is playing rd as GWS are playing on sunday;
    tu – kelly and keeffe
    td – coniglio and christensen

    9

    5
  13. tu – kelly and keeffe (15k in bank) – three fwd rookies on field.
td – coniglio and christensen (48k in bank) – 2 fwd rookies on field + christensen.

i wont know if keeffe is in the team rd 1 as they play on sunday – can be worrying with rioli ryan and fritsch playing sunday as well. Garlett playing thursday night

  14. what a mess trying to pick rucks. Who are the best two to go with this year now with kreuzer getting injured and hard to trust? COMMENT
    gawn and….
jacobs had a poor two jlt games

  15. In last year’s JLT matches, Kade Simpson averaged 91.5. In this year’s matches, he averaged just 76.5. Keep in mind that he is about to turn 34. Is this a sign of things to come?

TU: Yes, time to look elsewhere.
TD: Don’t be stupid. You’re not seriously going to put more stock in two JLT games than over a decade of premium scoring history, are you?

    14

    10
  16. Caleb Marchbank ($381,400) looks to have taken over some of Docherty’s running/distributing role at Carlton, averaging 95.5 over the two JLT games. Is it worth taking a punt on him?

    TU: Yea
    TD: Nay

    11

    15
  17. TU – Sicily and Dow
    TD – redden and coffield

Little worried about dow’s Scoring potential and the amount of free Sicily gives away

  18. In the absence of a forum for this thought I will post it here…
I was looking at predicting the next ‘breakout premium’ and decied to look at past ones: J.Kelly (1), M.Bontempelli (2), C.Oliver (3).
1 – 89 ave (season 3) – 113 ave (season 4). Increased ave by 10 points or more in seasons leading up to this.
    2. – 78 ave (season 1) – 103 ave (season 2).
    3. – 70 ave (season 1) – 111 ave (season 2).

There have been other players holding to this form but don’t ‘break out’. So I was thinking that each of these players was not rivalled by someone ‘better’ in their respective midfields. There were good players but none that were better i.e. N.Jones at Melbourne, Boyd at the Doggies, GWS more breadth than depth. So for this year Blakely who holds to this form worries me as he has Fyfe to compete with which might mean an increase to around the 100 point mark but not the 105 -110 that distinguishes ‘breakout’ players (especially when they are coming from previous average around the high 70s-80s). As for Weller, his averages are a little lower (so maybe 2019 is his year; ave of 71 in 2017 to 89 this year and then 110 the following?), with no significant competition this looks to be the case.
So what other teams have up and coming midfielders in weaker top end midfields. Weaker midfields = West Coast, Gold Coast, North Melbourne (potentially Carlton, even though they have Cripps, very limited depth; bodes well for Curnow). Of course this is in the midfield. In the fwd line Curnow looks to be holding to the pattern.

  19. Not including rookies and necessary changes, my team is…
    TU:All but set
TD: still chopping and changing regularly.

    1. I like Goldstein more for his ceiling etc but until Scott confirms what he is doing with Preuss then I would be looking at Jacobs

  20. comment the best mid fielder to take before replacing them with danger.
already have: martin, titchell, kelly, fyfe, cripps

  21. Is rayner now viable after his JLT 2 performance? 13 disp, 10 tackle, 84 DT & 71 SC? Considering i have 200K left over and fritsch on my field?

    T/U: Yes

    T/D: No

    7

    11
  22. Is it worth having 300K ready to trade Coniglio to Dangerfield (assuming he is playing round 2)?

T/U: Yes, he will be could well be one of the top scoring players as a POD

T/D: No, Its a redundant waste of a trade and the 300K could be used better elsewhere

    3

    15
    1. i dont care about rd1 score only league, so might just leave danger in from start. if danger is back round 3 might take coniglio for first 3 games and leave money in the bank

      4

      1
    2. I think cash in hand to use if not starting with Danger is a good idea, but if you start with Coniglio he should be your last upgrade, not the first.

If Danger is only out one round I would just start with him. Out two I would bring him in as a first upgrade or first injury replacement

  23. Brandon Ellis (DEF, $502,500) hasn’t missed a game since 2013, and averaged 91.5 last year (he averaged 85.4, 100.3, and 96.9 in the three years prior to that). Given the lack of genuine premiums in defence this year, I can’t understand why he isn’t more popular. Is there something I’m missing?

    TU: Agreed, great selection.
TD: No, he’s suffered amnesia over the summer and has forgotten how to play football.

    Comment: I didn’t know he had DEF-status.

    1. Shares the R14 bye? With Laird?

Once I picked Laird I went for non R14 bye players for my non-cow spots.

      3

      2
  24. I see lots of talk of Coniglio ato 450k as underpriced, what about Libba at 430k? I feel like he at least deserves to be in discussion especially with a good last hitout of the preseason.

TU: Look, Coniglio at that price is risky as is, dont start me with something even more speculative.
    TD: Dont sleep on Libba

  25. TU Lloyd
    TD L Mcdonald

Lloyd has concerns with when mills, Newman, McVeigh, Rampe all play together

McDonald new role but no data given his poor JLT1 and suspended for JLT2

Or do I go a rookie?
Current def line is Laird, Hibbard, D3, Sicily, Murray, Finlayson, (Doedee and Murphy)

    11

    1. McGrath. Ess $388k

My mid pricer of the year.

He ticks a lot of boxes for improvement

      Early draft pick.
      Cool head.
      Playing further up the ground.
      Improving team,
I think he is a future captain at the Dons.

I’m willing to bet he can gain 10/15 points a game this year.

With cash generation looking thin this year. A D5/6 (90 ave) at the end of the year for under 400K is gold.

      Best of luck in 2018

  26. I don’t have a DPP in my MID currently, yet have a few in the DEF and FWD lines.

TU: don’t worry about it, just get it sorted, eg Ahern, before the byes
    TD: address the issue NOW!

    Thanks for the feedback …

    1. I am having the same dilemma. Think I’m going Nank purely as I see more potential upside. He ave.d 97 first half last year. So can upgrade to Paddy, Sauce or ANO come the byes.

Currently have 14 players on the Rd14 bye, the Tank being one, but that’s another dilemma I won’t bore you with!!!

      Good luck
