Rare Gems – Round 18

Written by The Salamander on July 18 2019

Player Name (Club, Price, Ownership, Average 3-round-average, 5-round-average)

DEFENDERS

Darcy Byrne-Jones (PTA, $511,100, 0.9 %, 88.4, 122.7, 106.4)
After a slow first 8 weeks, Byrne-Jones has since gone bang, averaging 105 since round 9, much to the delight of his 1849 owners. A massive POD for the run home.

MIDFIELDERS

Ed Curnow (CAR, $463,300, 0.5 %, 81.8, 111.7, 100.4)
Back in the guts under new coach David Teague, the elder Curnow has averaged 116 since round 12, if you take out his injury-affected score from round 13. Tremendously good value for money if he can keep this sort of form up.

RUCKS

Matthew Kreuzer (CAR, $525,900, 1.5 %, 101.4, 116.3, 108.8)
With very few rucks being both rare and good, Kreuzer has managed a fair share of Rare Gems appearances this year. And now he’s getting one more. Now, be warned, players don’t come much more injury-prone than this guy. That’s a worry any time, but it’s especially concerning at this time of year. Having said that, he has been in very good form lately, averaging 111 over his last 6 games, and has a good draw, facing Witts, ROB, Hickey/Vardy, Nankervis/Soldo, Marshall, and Stanley on the run home. Of those, only Jarrod Witts is a challenge from a hitout-win-percentage standpoint, so he could be in for some big scores, if he can stay on the park.

FORWARDS

Levi Casboult (CAR, $419,100, 0.2 %, 76.3, 85.7, 90.6)
Rare? Definitely. A SuperCoach gem? Debatable. But what’s not debatable is that he has been in very good form lately. In his first two games under David Teague, Casboult played in defence, for scores of 94 and 102. With Liam Jones back, and with mounting injuries in Carlton’s forward line, he was then swung back to the other end of the ground, where, thanks to his coach’s forward-friendly gamestyle, he still managed respectable scores of 87, 66, and 104. With Caleb Marchbank out for the season, and with Charlie Curnow only a week or two away, he may end up back in defence before too long, which should mean intercept marks and a return to reliably high scoring. In the immediate term, he’ll likely stay in attack, but facing Gold Coast this week, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

  1. Mitch Duncan is only in 2% of teams and is the one I’m eyeing for my midfield next week.
