Ablett – Revisited

by Motts on March 10, 2010

For weeks now I’ve been solid in my decision not to take GAJ but today I’m wavering. Have even drafted a team that slots him in and to be honest it looks pretty damn good.

Where is everybody’s head at?

I was rock solid on him to begin with. I had him pre round one last year and watched those around me who didnt put him in rue their decisions immediately. I also then hung onto him when he was out with injury as many traded him and then of course kicked themselves for it later. Therefore I figured he was first bloke picked. My initial team has him in (I have kept this side on paper) and I have to admit I have been working on team B without him. An extra 200K between him and Selwood for example spreads very nicely across my midfield for a more even expectation. Still undecided but I do like the look of team B…

I will probably regret it – but I am leaving him out.

Just hoping he starts the season slowly and drops in price. Then will swoop in and get him!

I’ve had him in and out of my side for last couple of weeks but have to admit it looks alot stronger with him in. The only way i can seem to have sufficient $ left over with him in my team is to have two rookies on the field in the mids ie. Barlow & Martin with Shuey & Moles as Emerg. What’s your thoughts on this? A bit too much of a risk??

Not at all. I’ve heard of people starting 3 and 4 rookies but I reckon that’s a bit too much. Barlow and Martin are currently starting for me as well. But the midfield is the only position where you should be starting a first year player.

I dunno. See I KNOW he’s a gun, and will put up great numbers but his cost could mean that the gap between him and my second tier mids is that much more pronounced. So I just don’t know

I think the question needs to be asked- Is the extra 20 or 30 points per game higher with ablett than say Dal Santo worth the extra 150-200k? I currently have him in my team, but i think i might get rid of him….He is however a certain captain choice each week, so i dont know. Do we wait for his price to drop after a few rounds? Or do we not matter about his price?

Im confused as well….

It’s a toss up isn’t it?? No idea what i’ll do yet …. see if i have some bucks left over and he may sneak in.

Gary is in for one reason and one reason only to be a captain. If there were no captains there would be no point in picking him. I have Gary now, but he could easily be booted as i also have Nick & Brendon as reliable captains. The main decision for me is how to balance my mids at the moment i have 3 rookies starting with the stratigic motive being that there is always value in the mids and it seems the only real area where you can milk the cows.

I completely agree. I have a few captain choices as well, but the team looks so good with him in! I am also starting 3 rookies on the field, but I might downgrade ablett to say dal santo or someone and try and even out my team. DILLEMMAS!!

It basically comes down to this decision:
Have Ablett, – dont have goddard or anyone else over 600k

Dont have ablett, – have goddard and maybe upgrade a 500k forward to a reiwoldt/goodes.

I personally will be having ablett. On a quite day the man still scores over 100. Holds the record of 254 supercoach points in one game and i dont think it was a one off. I am expecting him to top 200 more than once this year. I dont think Goddard/ Reiwoldt/ Goodes are anywhere near what this great man can do in the world of supercoach!!! Even if he was 800k I would still pick him

You make a good point as well. And I guess even if he gets injured you can get the next best player and still have over 100k spare!

PREDICTION:

REIWOLDT/ GOODES / GODDARD To all drop by 50-100k after 3 rounds.

ABLETT to drop between 20-50k

Would ur strategy then be to not start them? Wait for their drop then pounce?

Yes Cameron that is the secret to this game. Predicting which stars will have their price drop and thats when you pounce. Last year I finished TOP 800 for the year.

risky having 2 (3 if you include cotchin who hasnt notched up 20 games yet) rookies in your starting line up. Also don’t think Ball is gonna have a big year. I am preicting he will score his 80-90 each week but there is better value out there for less money such as Daniel Rich or even Daniel Kerr who surely has to have a big year after his last couple.

I have a strong Defence as well Matt
but I have sacrifised a little in the ruck ( 2 – 300k’s )
And also have no-one over 500k in the forward line as I believe forwards are too inconsistent. In saying that I still have a very competitive midfield.
Dont want to show my whole team but I think it is locked in for round 1

Just with your point again, it comes down to scoring capacity. Ablett has a much better chance of scoring over 150 than anyone else. If you have him captain then there’s 300 points. Last year he only scored below 80 once, and I didn’t have him last year :( This year I won’t be making the same mistake!!

Hey boys, I have had Ablett in my team almost every year that I have participated in Supercoach. He almost never lets you down. Who here doesn’t want to get 300 from their captain?

Here’s my midfield, I reckon its a bit heavy, what do you guys think? Ablett, G- (C), Montagna, L, Swan, D (VC), Mitchell, S, Barlow, M, Moles,

EMG:Banner, M, Shuey, L

POJ you can get pretty much the same points your getting from Montagna and Swan from anyone in the high 500k’s which would give you 100k to spash elsewhere

Well Ablett’s an awesome player. I might get him if his price lowers though I’ve already thought of a team without him. He just seems too expensive at 720k+ and I dont think he’ll keep an average of 140 all the time.

I’m considering having 4 100k players and 4 500-600k players in my midfield instead of trying to have a mix of 200-300k players what does anyone think of this?

Good post Motts. Certainly got the Punters talking.

I’ve changed my team over and over again. The one player locked in through the whole process……. Ablett. I’m feeling more strongly about this as we’re getting closer to the season as well.

Thanks for re-opening the debate Motts. I had locked my mind into thinking he was too expensive and that the rest of my side would suffer. Not so. I’ve just put together another version including perma-captain GAJ and whatayaknow? It’s pretty damn fine. I think you’d rate it too, Motts. No Magpies and 11 players from the 3 teams that appear strongest (Cats, Saints, Dogs).
