      1. I wouldn’t start worrying until we actually see him start there. Positions on teamsheets are generally treated as nothing more than a formality these days.

  3. Traded in JJK last week while theorising, forgot there was a Thursday game and couldn’t reverse, because of this can’t afford Kelly this week and now JJK is out.

  4. Are F7’s and M9’s overrated?

If you have any other ruck besides Gawn and Grundy I would sort that out first after going full premo rather than gets F7’s and M9’s

    1. Think it’s all relative, but yeah a guaranteed extra 20+ pts per week on field is way more important than something decent on the pine just in case.

    1. Another thing to keep in mind is that Grundy’s draw (in terms of direct opponents rather than teams) has been relatively soft thus far; it gets a bit harder in the back half of the year.

Don’t get me wrong, I fully expect him to remain the number 2 ruckman in the competition, but his post-bye average might be 5 to 10 points lower than pre-bye.

      1. Grundy has 6 of the last 9 games @ the G , away he plays GC , syd & bris ,
pies players like Grundy , De Goey & Crisp are going to have a good finish to the year I recon ..

        3

        1
        1. I was talking about his direct opponents, i.e. opposition ruckmen, not the teams he’s playing.

This point is easier to demonstrate if we categorize ruckmen into different tiers, based on their form this season:

A-grade: Gawn, Grundy, Martin, Naitanui, Sinclair (arguably), Sandilands (he hasn’t been posting big scores, but he doesn’t tend to concede them, either, so for our purposes we’ll call him an a-grader).
B-grade: Kreuzer, McEvoy, Nankervis, Witts, Goldstein, Ryder
C-grade: Lobb, Bellchambers, Jacobs (at least earlier in the – he’s likely to be a B-grader from here on out), Zac Smith, Rhys Stanley, Tom Hickey, etc.
D-grade: Whoever the Bulldogs decide to trot out each week, makeshift ruckmen like Apeness, L-plate ruckmen like Scott Jones, etc.

With that out of the way, we can look at some statistics:

Brodie Grundy 2018 averages vs ruck tiers:

          A-grade: 104
          B-grade: 121
          C-grade: 128
          D-grade: 143

          Pre-bye opponent breakdown:

          A-grade: 2
          B-grade: 3
          C-grade: 5
          D-grade: 2

          Post-bye opponent breakdown:

          A-grade: 4
          B-grade: 5
          C-grade: 1
          D-grade: 0

Projected post-bye average based on current averages vs each tier: 115

          1. That is some awesome insight, but I also agree with Will below. If you have the trades, it is probably worth making the trade, Martin being a possible exception.

            1. I’ve had Goldy from the get go. Rode through the darkness of Rnd3-8 where he didn’t crack the ton but he’s had four tons in a row now with Dogs, Bombres and GC to come.

              4

              0
              1. I brought in Goldy after Ryder went down early. Are you planning on holding him Roo Bloke or trading up to Grundy after he tops out in value next week?

                0
                1. Really good research Salamander and although I generally agree with your grades I think you need to grade rucks on hitout ability rather than overall play. I think most of your grades are pretty accurate anyway but I think Nankervis, Kreuzer and Sinclair should all be well below Bellchambers. I think hitouts and not overall play negates the other rucks score. Good insight though, well done.

                  3

                  2
                  1. I haven’t looked into those particular stats, but you’re probably onto something there – the fact that Sandilands doesn’t concede big scores is telling.

This trend in Grundy’s scoring is actually something I discovered by accident. I was looking into the sorts of scores that he had conceded this season (which thankfully lead me to avoid captaining Gawn in the Queen’s Birthday match). Once I had the data in Excel, I decided on a whim to look into this.

If I were to expand this analysis to all the ruckmen in the competition, I would definitely try see if there were any correlations with hitout rates etc.

    2. It’s not a priority but a 19 point gap in average between him and Grundy is almost the difference between some rookies and the premiums you will be upgrading them to in forward and defence. Of course the question is if Grundy can keep it up and I truly believe he can. Martin can also get better but I predict he will trail Grundy by 15+ points per game. I’m a Martin owner and if I don’t cop another injury in the next few weeks and I can make the trade I probably will.

  5. I really hate it when you agonize all week over trade options, crunch the numbers, finally decide on trades, be happy with your choices, do a practice run with the reverse trades button before the teams are announced, and find out your $500 short……sigh.

  6. I think there must be a mistake in the teams I have some players that aren’t being dropped? I assume it’ll be fixed soon.

  7. 18 on the field with T Smith in… allowed me to go early on Battle. Am I crazy to not have Fyfe in my midfield and a completed team? I might upgrade Parker to Fyfe eventually but is it really worth it??

    Well done Chaos Theory!

PS…Buffalo Wild Wings Sporting Club putting on the Hawks v Suns game 5.25pm Friday night for Catta ( local time ) great night to bond with my sons & watch the footy while the missus goes shopping 😉

Sorry read that you are doing it so tough!! Enjoy, especially Friday.

  9. Spargo dropped sucks!

Can field just 18 with the new Gold Coast lad joining my team. 16 premos though, Ahern being the other rookie so fingers crossed no late outs!

  10. 3 trades 2 down 1 up. To get 18.

Normally I average 21 players a week during the byes.

    Worst bye rounds ever.
