AFLW Crystal Ball 2019

In addition to the AFLW Fantasy competition, I’m also running a Crystal Ball competition, like Roo Bloke runs for the men’s season.

Rules:

As with Roo Bloke’s competition, points are awarded as follows:

5 points if you get it right

4 points if your pick comes 2nd

3 points if your pick comes 3rd

2 points if your pick comes 4th

1 point if your pick comes 5th

In your entry, names of players should include both her first and last names (please try to spell them correctly! It makes my life much easier). Teams should be named as follows:

Adelaide

Brisbane

Carlton

Collingwood

Fremantle

Geelong

GWS

Melbourne

North Melbourne

Western Bulldogs

Post your entry in the comments section below.

Categories:

● Premier

● Runner-up

● Minor Premier – the AFL may or may not officially award a Minor Premier this year, given the new conference system, but we can still calculate it easily enough: most premiership points in the home-and-away season, sorted by percentage in the event of a tie.

● Conference A winner – the highest on the Conference A ladder at the end of the home-and-away season (Adelaide, Fremantle, North Melbourne, Melbourne, and the Western Bulldogs).

● Conference B winner – as above (Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, and GWS).

● Wooden Spoon – see Minor Premier notes.

● Biggest mover – which team will move the greatest number of spots on the ladder from last year (includes finals)? As with the Minor Premier and Runner-up categories, we’re pretending that there is a single ladder.

● How many places? – by just how many places will the above mover move? Value must be either positive or negative, with entries that do not have a + or – sign assumed to be positive.

● B&F – the AFLW version of the Brownlow.

● Leading Goalkicker – the award that will one day be called the Vescio Medal/Award/Trophy. For now though, it’s just the ‘leading goalkicker’. Home-and-away season only.

● Biggest haul – who will kick the most goals in a single game? Includes finals.

● Rising Star

● Top Defender – highest scorer by total points in the home-and-away season, under the new SalamanderCoach 2.0 system.

● Top Midfielder – as above.

● Top Ruck – as above.

● Top Forward – as above.

● No. 1 Rookie ($200,000 or less) – as above.

● No. 1 Mid-pricer ($450,000 or less) – as above.

● Highest Score – the player who scores the highest SalamanderCoach score in a single game.

● Geelong finish – where will the newest teams finish? Includes finals series.

● North Melbourne finish

● Overall scoring trend – The average collective score of both teams last year was 71 points. To the nearest 10 %, how will the scoring this season compare? E.g. 120 % if you think that number is going to trend upwards, 80 % if you think it will go down, 100 % if you think it will stay the same, etc. Home-and-away season only.

    1. Hey Emma,

I just thought I should let you know that although she is slated to play forward this season, Davey does not have fwd-status, and so is ineligible to be the no. 1 forward.

Also, in the interest of simplicity, the ‘Overall scoring trend’ category based on 10 % increments, so you’ll need to round your 115 % prediction up or down 5 %.

    1. Hey Schwarz,

Sorry if I didn’t make it clear, but the ‘Geelong/North Melbourne finish’ categories are based on the whole ladder, not the conferences.

      1. Apart from being a (very trustworthy) administrator of this site, AFAIK Schwarz is in a very different timezone, so although the lockout is in 25 minutes, if there are no objections I’ll make an exception and let him fix these when he’s awake.

        1. Since we’re now nearly three rounds in, I’ve decided in the interest of simplicity that I will accept the entries of ‘4th in conference’ as they are.

  7. Thanks again for organising all this Salamander. Amazing effort. I have little or no idea what I’m doing, so consulted Sportsbet for some tips 😉

    1. Just so you know, the ‘Overall scoring trend’ category is based on 10 % increments, so 118 % will be rounded to 120 %.
