Alternative Strategy

โ€œhey guys i was just wanting some opinion on this strategy that i have seen from a guy on a website.

His strategy is to have:

7 premium backs

2 premium Rucks

7 premium Forwards

0 premium Mids

This means that he will only need 6 upgrades for the whole season and will end up having a great midfield because he will know who is performing since mids are the highest scoring position you want to be correct with your premiums. This will sacrifice points early but he will end up having a full premium team by about round 8 ( which is earlier than most teams have a full premium team) and all he needs for the rest of his trades are for injuries and form slumps.

I think it is a great strategy and i think he will get rewarded this year.”

What do you think – could it actually work?

  1. The assumption being used here is that there will be enough cash in the bank to upgrade all 6 midfielders by R8. In the meantime you’re bleeding points because the midfield is where you get most of your points from. It also assumes there will be suitable downgrade targets coming online each week as you’re looking to upgrade.

Its interesting, but I won’t be going near it.

  2. I had a look at this one early in the year, but there are certain things that could go wrong

    1) Rookie Job security
    2) Premiums dropping enough in price
    3) Downgrade targets

  3. Those six upgrades are going to cost nearly 3 trades each to a premium keeper midfielder by Rd 8. With the byes the appreciation rate of the rookies will take longer to get to break-even.
Last time I looked, we still had only two trades per week making this strategy a nonsense unless you started upgrading 3 weeks ago!.

  4. This is a strategy that i am staying well away from.
But it will b interesting to see how the teams go that use it.

  5. I think there is ‘some’ merit to this theory, but won’t be running it in my main comp. If I was truly inspired I would create a test-team and run that in parallel. Just not sure my life can fit in the time, stress, and cost of the divorce!

  6. It is basically a GnR’s strategy but having all your rookies in the one basket… you are just as wise to try having your 16 best prems in any position and then try and find the rookies to fill the holes.
Your premium mids are most important!

  7. I can’t see it working too well. If you had to choose a position to load up on rookies in, I’d be making it the forward line (which is incidently what a lot of 1st years coaches do, just due to order of selection). The midfielders are gold. The forwards this year are not as strong, with only 2-3 certainties for the year and all the others having valid question marks over them. Also, there seems to be a good supply of rookies in the forwards (Krak, Gamble, Petrie, Knights, Matera etc etc)

  8. Interesting but would somebody like to explain how you will be able to have six premiums in the midfield by round 8 ??
Given that the price of your rookies won’t go up until round three, and even then they will not even be close to the $300,000 mark required to allow you to trade out two of them, one for a trade down target and the other for the 500+ premium. It will be more like round 5 or six before they will reach this value. Then it will take you 6 weeks from then as you will only be able to get one premimum a week and thats if your lucky to find good trade down options in the midfield in all those rounds.

Doesn’t add up in my book.

Final point: it will take the same amount of time and trades to up grade your rookies to premiums, weather there in the backline, forwardline or midfield

  9. Would never use this in supercoach but am going to have a crack at it in my dream team side.Have filled my midfield with krauker, harris, swallow, duncan, rohan, ward&heppel.then filled all
remaining spaces with premium dpps.should be fun to see what happens .have a go at yourselves & lighten up a bit boys.
