Welcome back to our Weekly Round-Up of all things ‘magoos’. To all newbies at SCT, this is where we look at AFL clubs’ state affiliates and assess how their listed players are performing. Positions and prices are given in brackets for those players remotely SC relevant. Enjoy!

ADELAIDE

State league affiliate: Adelaide (SANFL)
This weekend: Central District v Adelaide – Saturday, April 27, 1.40pm, X Convenience Oval

Key forward Josh Jenkins (FWD, $389 200) continues to push his case for a senior recall, kicking three goals from 18 disposals and taking seven marks, but with Tex coming into some form, will the Crows want to tinker with what looks to be working?

Mature-age rookie Patrick Wilson (MID, $147 700) continues to rack up big numbers, the midfielder finishing with 30 disposals, nine tackles, seven clearances and a goal. Wilson is averaging 32 touches this year. We’ve been talking about him for 18 months now, but he can’t seem to break into the Crows’ stacked midfield. His one late game last year (34 SCpts) has him superficially priced in 2019.

Ned McHenry (MID/FWD, $139 800) who was drafted with pick 16 last year, had 28 disposals, 11 tackles and seven marks in Adelaide’s 35-point win over Central District. He has missed the past two weeks with concussion.

Experienced key back Andy Otten was one of the Crows’ best, taking 12 marks to go with his 27 disposals, but is largely SC-irrelevant.

BRISBANE LIONS

State league affiliate: Brisbane (NEAFL)
This weekend: Gold Coast v Brisbane – Saturday, April 27, 10am, Metricon Stadium

Allen Christensen (FWD, $395 000) responded to his omission from the senior side by finishing with 32 disposals and six tackles in Brisbane’s thumping 97-point win over Gold Coast in a curtain-raiser to the QClash.

Young midfielder Corey Lyons (MID, $123 900) topped the Lions’ disposal count with 38, including 14 kicks and seven marks. He is yet to make his AFL debut in his third season at the club.

Ben Keays’ (MID, $260 600) haul of 4.3 took his tally to 12 goals from three NEAFL games. He also had 26 touches, eight marks and five tackles.

Second-year forward Toby Wooller (FWD, $123 900) was named Brisbane’s best for his 31-disposal, nine-mark and one goal effort. Wooller is starting to build some strong form, having finished with 23 disposals and four goals last week.

With Andrews, Mathieson and Zac Bailey all back in full training this week, it may however be some time before we see the youngsters getting an opportunity.

CARLTON

State league affiliate: Northern Blues (VFL)
This weekend: Northern Blues v Werribee – Saturday, April 27, 2pm, Ikon Park

Former Giants midfielder Matt Kennedy (MID, $350 600) was one of the Northern Blues’ best in a disappointing day for the side, who lost by 58 points to Werribee.

Kennedy topped the Blues’ disposal count with 24, also finishing with seven tackles.

Draftee Liam Stocker (remember him? MID, $126 300) had 17 disposals, while rookie Hugh Goddard (DEF, $159 600) and pre-season popular defender Tom Williamson (DEF, $189 500) had 14 apiece.

COLLINGWOOD

State league affiliate: Collingwood (VFL)
This weekend: Essendon v Collingwood – Saturday, April 27, 2pm, Windy Hill

Swingman Ben Reid is gradually building form in the VFL, kicking two goals from 22 disposals in Collingwood’s 37-point loss to Essendon.

Reid was also dominant in the air, finishing with 12 marks and eight hit-outs as a reserve ruck.

Rupert Wills (MID, $166 100) had 28 disposals and eight tackles and was his industrious self, while draftee Isaac Quaynor (DEF $153 300) finished with 21.

Classy runner Daniel Wells (FWD, $302 900) recorded 20 disposals, five marks and a goal in his third game back from a long-term foot injury.

ESSENDON

State league affiliate: Essendon (VFL)
This weekend: Essendon v Collingwood – Saturday, April 27, 2pm, Windy Hill

Ben McNiece led Essendon’s disposal count with 26 and five marks in the team’s 37-point win against Collingwood. The Category B rookie defender is yet to play a game this year, likely needing a player to go to the long-term injury list in order to do so.

Pre-season breakout contender Kyle Langford (MID/FWD, $436 700) is beginning to rediscover some form, with 25 disposals and a goal. If he manages to break back into the side, he is due a significant price drop and could be an attractive option later in the season. Classy Dylan Clarke (MID, $147 700) had 24 touches. He’s averaging 25 disps, 4 tackles and 2 goals per game in the VFL this year. Might be one for 2020 if he can’t break into the side this year.

Second-year forward Jordan Houlahan (FWD, $123 900) kicked three goals from 10 touches, while swingman Aaron Francis kicked two from his 10.

FREMANTLE

State league affiliate: Peel Thunder (WAFL)
This weekend: Subiaco v Peel Thunder – Saturday, April 27, 2.15pm, Leederville Oval

Midfielder Connor Blakely finished with 20 disposals and four marks in his first game for the year following a serious hamstring injury suffered in late January. He’s back!!

Meanwhile, two rookies led the way for Fremantle’s AFL-listed players in Peel Thunder’s 62-point loss to Subiaco.

Category B rookie (NGA) and mooted loophole option in the pre-seasson Jason Carter (DEF/MID, $102 400) had 23 disposals, six marks and four tackles, while Stefan Giro (FWD, $260 800) who is yet to add to his 10-game AFL tally this year, also had 23 touches, 21 of which were kicks!

Tom North (MID, $123 900) who has not made his AFL debut, continues to build good numbers in the WAFL, finishing with 21 touches and three marks, while draftee Luke Valente (MID, $117 300) had 19 and six tackles.

Big man Sean Darcy (RUC, $361 500) had 35 hit-outs, 11 disposals and kicked a goal.

GEELONG

State league affiliate: Geelong (VFL)
This weekend: Bye

GOLD COAST

State league affiliate: Gold Coast (NEAFL)
This weekend: Gold Coast v Brisbane – Saturday, April 27, 10am, Metricon Stadium

Experienced midfielder/forward Aaron Young (FWD, $325 700) was the Suns’ best in a disappointing 97-point thrashing from Brisbane. Young, who is yet to break into the senior side this year despite having played all 22 games last year, had 40 disposals, nine marks and nine tackles.

Sam Day kicked three goals from 17 disposals, while big man Ben King, taken with pick No.6 in last year’s draft, also kicked three from 15 disposals and eight marks.

Rookie Jacob Dawson (MID, $237 400) was busy with 30 disposals, while swingman Chris Burgess had 16 touches and three marks after being dropped from the AFL side.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

State league affiliate: GWS Giants (NEAFL)
This weekend: Sydney v GWS Giants – Saturday, April 27, 2.50pm, Blacktown International Sportspark

Zac Langdon, who is yet to play a senior match after 17 in his debut season, kicked two goals from 21 disposals and also took nine marks.

Young pair Isaac Cumming (DEF, $173 700) had 28 disposals, including 22 kicks and eight marks and Nick Shipley (MID, $130 300) had 25 and eight tackles. Both were busy in the 45-point loss to Sydney.

Draftee Jackson Hately (grrrr) responded from his AFL omission with 19 disposals, six marks and six tackles, while rookie Zach Sproule’s (MID/FWD, $123 900) two goals took his NEAFL season tally to 12 from four games.

Bubble-boy Lachie Keeffe (DEF, $190 500) took 10 marks on his way to 15 touches.

HAWTHORN

State league affiliate: Box Hill Hawks (VFL)
This weekend: Box Hill Hawks v Coburg – Saturday, April 27, 1pm, Box Hill City Oval

Ruckman Marc Pittonet (RUC, $234 500) had a day out in Box Hill’s comfortable 51-point win over Coburg, finishing with 42 hit-outs, 29 disposals and a goal.

Harry Morrison (MID/FWD, 291 800) responded with class after his AFL omission, the hard runner kicking three goals from 32 touches.

Irish defender Conor Glass (DEF, $210 100) had 19 disposals and five tackles, while fellow backman David Mirra (DEF, $352 800) also racked up the touches, finishing with 23 and seven marks.

Second-year small forward Dylan Moore (FWD, $123 900), who played his one AFL match in round three (40 SCpts v NTH) , kicked 3.2 from 17 disposals and also took six marks.

MELBOURNE

State league affiliate: Casey Demons (VFL)
This weekend: Casey Demons v Richmond – Saturday, April 27, 2pm, Casey Fields

Defender Oscar McDonald did his chances of a recall to the senior side no harm with a strong showing for the Demons in their one-point loss to Richmond at Casey Fields.

McDonald picked up a team-high 22 disposals, while brothers Josh and Corey Wagner collected 20 apiece. Untried rookie Declan Keilty (DEF, $123 900) showed some good signs with two goals.

NORTH MELBORUNE

State league affiliate: North Melbourne (VFL)
This weekend: North Melbourne v Port Melbourne – Saturday, April 27, 2pm, Avalon Airport Oval

Jy Simpkin and Paul Ahern found plenty of the ball during North Melbourne’s 55-point loss to Port Melbourne, with the duo picking up 33 and 32 disposals through the midfield.

Ruckman Tom Campbell had 26 disposals to go with his 25 hitouts, while forgotten forward Taylor Garner scored his first goal of his season in his third game back from injury.

PORT ADELAIDE

State league affiliate: Port Adelaide (SANFL)
This weekend: Woodville-West Torrens v Port Adelaide – Saturday, April 27, 2.40pm, Maughan Thiem Kia Oval

Experienced midfielder Jack Trengove (DEF, $235 600) continued his excellent recent form with 31 disposals, eight tackles and two goals during Port Adelaide’s 37-point triumph over Woodville-West Torrens.

Big man Billy Frampton booted five goals for Port, while fellow tall Peter Ladhams was impressive with 27 disposals, 22 hit-outs, four contested marks and a goal. Former Cat Steven Motlop collected 18 disposals and kicked two majors.

RICHMOND

State league affiliate: Richmond (VFL)
This weekend: Casey Demons v Richmond – Saturday, April 27, 2pm, Casey Fields

Bubble-boy Shai Bolton (FWD, $146 600) responded well to his omission from the senior side as he produced a best-on-ground performance for the Tigers in their thrilling one-point victory over the Casey Demons. Bolton picked up 25 disposals and laid a whopping 11 tackles and is likely to come into consideration to replace injured spearhead Jack Riewoldt. Look out!!

Youngster Riley Collier-Dawkins (MID, $121 800) had 18 disposals and seven tackles, while Connor Menadue collected 23 possessions of his own.

Some bad news for the Tigers but certainly SC-relevant, is that the win was soured by injuries to Jack Graham (hamstring) and Maverick Weller (back soreness), with the duo hurting themselves in the opening half and leaving the Tigers short on numbers after the main break.

ST KILDA

State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Bye

SYDNEY

State league affiliate: Sydney (NEAFL)
This weekend: Sydney v GWS Giants – Saturday, April 27, 2.50pm, Blacktown International Sportspark

Tasmanian Robbie Fox was adjudged best afield in the Swans’ reserves 45-point triumph over the Giants. He collected 37 disposals and booted three goals to put his hand up for senior selection, while Irishman Colin O’Riordan was again good as he finished with 40 possessions and 12 marks. However, neither are particularly SC-relevant.

Big man Darcy Cameron (RUC, $135 700) also impressed with 24 disposals and 27 hit-outs.

WEST COAST EAGLES

State league affiliate: West Coast (WAFL)
This weekend: Claremont v West Coast – Saturday, April 27, 1.00pm, Claremont Oval

Bailey Williams (RUC/FWD, $117 300) was the hero for the Eagles, with the youngster slotting the match-winning goal late in proceedings to help his side to a two-point victory over Claremont.

Williams finished with three goals for the match, while Jake Waterman also contributed three.

Dumped ruckman Nathan Vardy had 10 possessions and 15 hit-outs, while fellow big man Keegan Brooksby celebrated his 29th birthday with a game-high 27 hit-outs.

Fellow rookie Francis Watson was stretchered from the field during the third term with a shoulder injury, while Hamish Brayshaw (MID, $123 900) was the leading possession winner for the Eagles with 28.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

State league affiliate: Footscray (VFL)
This weekend: Williamstown v Footscray – Sunday, April 28, 11.40am, Downer Oval

Footscray suffered its first defeat for the season but young Bulldog Bailey Dale pushed his case for a senior recall with 20 disposals and a goal against Williamstown on Sunday.

The Dogs would be buoyed by the performance of a number of draftees returning from injury, including Laitham Vandermeer (DEF/MID, $117 300) with 13 disposals and three marks and Buku Khamis (DEF, $102 400) with 17 disposals and six marks.

Patrick Lipinski continued his solid form with 19 touches. He’s averaging 22 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles and a goal in the VFL this year. Father-son recruit Rhylee West (MID, $117 300) had 17 disposals and five tackles.

How will the above performances test the JS of our bubble-boys Young and Hayes?

Forgotten defender Fletcher Roberts was a steady cog in the backline with 18 touches and five marks, while young key back Lewis Young was shifted to the ruck and had 22 hit-outs and four marks.

Grand Final hero Tom Boyd continued his slow return from a long-term back injury with 19 hit-outs and eight touches.

In a low-scoring affair, young key forward Josh Schache was unable to impose himself on the scoreboard, finishing with just one goal.

  1. Great write-up as usual AS.
Has there been any analysis regarding being named as emergency and getting a game? Is it a waiting room indicating improving JS or largely irrelevant to selection?

    1. Think it depends as much on fate as anything else. Some get the opportunity due to ill-luck, others (like Constable last year) can wait all year and not get a go!
Someone else may be able to shed some more light on this, but that’s my 2c worth! 🙂

    2. Based on following Richmond pretty closely, it’s largely irrelevant.

So many other factors come into who’s on the emergency list.

  2. Thanks for the great write up. That’s really above and beyond.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for Ben Cavarra for the dogs who was on a lot of peoples radars before getting injured.

As far as I can tell he has now recovered and played in the VFL game on Sunday.
And did ok without setting the world on fire. (I’m just going off the stat sheet)

Anyone else have any info on him? or saw the game?

    1. Apparently he did ok, but looked v slow. Might be a few weeks off full fitness yet. Played predominantly forward and up a wing.

    1. He did yeah. 18 disposals (10 kicks), 2 marks, 3 tackles, 4 I50s. Not rated among the 5 best for NTH. Can’t glean any other info sorry.

  3. Trengove averaging close to 40 disposals a game in the 2’s for Port.
Anyone know if he is ever a chance of a call up? (relevant for my draft team)

    1. He played a couple last year as a wing/utility, but only cos of injury. He seems back to his fittest and best. Would love to see him back personally. Maybe if/when the kids need a rest.
Port seem very much future-focused now tho’ which’ll surely limit his chances.

    2. Haven’t seen any of the games so take this with a grain of salt, but what I’ve been hearing from other Port supporters that have seen him is hes basically playing Rockliff’s role in the 2’s.

While his form is excellent I cant see him coming in with his current role without an injury to one of our accumulators (e.g. rockliff) because we already have a host of mids in the team and he doesn’t have any real pace these days.

Probably also doesnt help that Motlop, Amon and Mayes are all in the picture too, having played great footy in the SANFL.
