Back To The Future – PART THREE (Premium MIDs)

In Part 3 of ‘Back To The Future’ the stars of the show, the Premium Midfielders are now under the microscope, with a reminder that a 2018 post-bye average is the basis for the discussion.

Premium Midfielders:

Jack Steele (STK $512,600)

The secret tip is secret no longer

Jack “The Human Backpack” Steele stormed up the SC rankings late last season as an exceptional tagger. The strongly built MID was not only able to negate the amount of ball his direct opponent received, but also won plenty of the ball himself, in a new role that has fit him perfectly and he looks set to continue into 2019.

Steele improved his average disposals per game from 20.8 to 27.1 and his tackling from 6.0 to 7.6 post-bye which subsequently improved his SC average from 81.4 to 111.8 ppg.  These improvements resulted in an enormous 18.4% increase on his overall 2018 average and 2019 price tag. His post-bye scores included six tons  (two of which were 140+ games) and three scores below 100 (with a low of 81).

If Steele can replicate his late season output given that he will more than likely be placed in the same role, he provides plenty of value at only $512,600. Currently sitting at only 1% ownership**, he is also a great POD.

Are you brave enough to select him?

Jack Redden (WCE $517,400)

Can Redden emerge as the #1 Eagles MID?

This former Lion turned Premiership Eagle enjoyed his best season in years earning himself a runner-up in the Club B&F; co-winner of the Eagles player-of-the-finals award; and most importantly, finding himself back on the radar in terms of SC relevance. This will be the first time Redden has been on the radar since leaving the Lions in 2015, where he averaged between 95.5 and 103.1 for 5 consecutive years. His post-bye average demands consideration.

Despite being one amongst a deep West Coast midfield, Redden led the Eagles in disposals, rebound 50’s, inside 50’s, clearances, contested possessions and uncontested possessions. Redden averaged 109.9 post-bye (including finals) which is 11.7% higher than his 2018 average and 15.3% higher than what he is priced at for 2019.

Being priced at ~95.3 and still in his prime years makes Redden an attractive prospect yet a very unpopular choice. Redden is currently sitting at 0% – so a certain POD he is with most coaches possibly overlooking his post-bye form.

Arguably no greater POD out there.

Dayne Beams (COL $557,600)

Happy to be back in Magpie-Land……

Beams has returned to the Pies, just as he was finding vintage Dayne Beams form. In a huge coup for the Premiership contenders, the Pies landed Beams in the trade period after months of will-he or won’t-he-leave the Lions discussions. The Pies are certain to strengthen their already quality midfield with one of the best midfielders in the game.

Beams was outstanding in 2018, especially from mid-season after stepping down as club captain. He exploded post-bye with 8 tons from his last 10 games, with five 120+ games and a low of only 80. Beams post-bye average of 116.7 was 13.6% higher than his 2018 season average of 102.7 and was the equal 4th best amongst all mid-fielders.

A return to the Pies in a deep midfield that will provide plenty of assistance to an already seemingly happier and freed up Beams should be good news to Coaches, as 7% of already agree.

Is he the best pick in 2019 from the Collingwood midfield brigade? The numbers suggest so!

  1. Treloar probably a worthy challenger to Beams – but with those hammies, I’ll answer in the affirmative to all three of those questions.

  2. Are you brave enough to select him (Steele)?
    HELL NO!

Can Redden emerge as the #1 Eagles MID?
Well of course he can but behind Gaff, Yeo and arguably Shuey, he might only sneak a podium finish.

Is he the best pick in 2019 from the Collingwood midfield brigade?
Beams is a jet and he’s proven two things in SC over the seasons.
    1. He’s super good at cracking out high tons.
    2. He will burn you at some stage with an injury concern. He’s NEVER played a full season.
    3 x 21 game seasons
    2 x 19 game seasons
    2 x 16 game seasons
    1 x 14 game season
    1 x 7 game season
    1 x 2 game season
He’ll win you a H2H or two but he could also cost you a H2H or two. Maybe start him and ride your luck as long as you can?

  3. Great write-up once again! I’ll give some answers to your questions as well:

“Are you brave enough to select him?”
Brave? Why do you have to be brave? Picking him is a no-brainer! 😉

“Can Redden emerge as the #1 Eagles MID?”
If he can stay consistent he absolutely can, he still chucked up a few meh scores after the bye, but all signs point to him at least competing with Gaff and Yeo for the no. 1 spot.

“Is he the best pick in 2019 from the Collingwood midfield brigade?”
He might have the best average at the end of the season, but no he is not the best pick. I really doubt he’ll play a full season, and it’s unknown how playing in a stacked midfield will affect his scores. Treloar would be the better pick for mine, we know how he scores in a stacked midfield, 6x6x6 format should favour fast outside runners well, and is more durable and consistent than Beams.

    1. Cheers Ben. The love for Steele is strong here I’m predicting.

Very valid points – something tells me Beams could be a very handy pick up and may do well as a resting forward.

  4. I love the fact that Redden won a premiership medal, was 2nd in the B&F, was the ‘player-of-the-finals’ but MOST IMPORTANTLY, is SuperCoach-relevant again! Nice one, Hot Sauce!

  5. Great writeup.
Was listening to Adam Treloar on SEN this morning and he mentioned that all of the Collingwood mids would be focusing heavily on a ‘secondary role’ due to the fact they have such a stacked midfield. He predicted that he would be playing a fair bit up forward and there would be a lot of rotations between mid/fwd.
For that reason, I’ll be very unlikely to start any Collingwood mid premiums. Will be a lot of points to share between Pendles, Adams, Beams, Treloar, Sidey, Sier, Phillips, DeGoey etc

  6. Personally think Adams might push Collingwoods best midfielder spot this year. Brodie Grundy stated (on the AFLfantasy podcast) that Adams is training the house down and also said Treloar, Adams and Beams is the likely go to trio (no surprises).

However i won’t be starting any Collingwood mids with Beams always an injury risk, Treloar being more of a fantasy player due to his poor efficiency by foot and id rather select a Zorko or Steele ahead of Adams despite his value.

    1. They might be (ex) Giants!
Adams, Steele, Kelly, Cogs, Taranto and Treloar all finishing top10? It could happen!
A bit like Geelong possibly owning the FWD line: Danger, Kelly, Menegola, Parfitt and Hawkins. Not beyond reason.
We just need Adelaide to cover the DEFs: Laird, Milera, Smith and Doedee. Admittedly, that’s a bit of a stretch.

Great stuff HS. If I wasn’t a St Kilda fan I’d be locking in Steele yesterday. Will see how he looks this Saturday. I’d love to, but I don’t wanna curse him if that makes sense? Redden and Beams are no-no’s for me. Redden could be a great call and I so nearly took a punt on him last year, but was warned off. I see Beams doing for COL what Dusty did for the Tigers last year … and that is spending a significant % of time drawing opponents away from their channel inside 50.

Apart from Steele, neither of them have had anywhere near a full pre-season. Admittedly less important at their respective stages in career.

Thanks again HS. What’s next? Can’t wait
