Back To The Futures – Caulfield Cup

Written by Schwarzwalder on October 13 2020

G’day Coaches!

Massive start to the Caulfield Cup Carnival over the weekend with Ole Kirk getting up in the Guineas.  Mr Quickie took out the Toorak Handicap at decent odds while Odeum was too good in the 1000 Guineas.  Arcadia Queen pulled off an upset, getting over the top of hot favorite Russian Camelot in the Caulfield Stakes.

Our early selections from last weeks write-up didn’t quite get there for us over the weekend.  Instant Celebrity was an admirable run, having to circle the field again to finish 3rd.  Junipal never really looked likely in the run, perhaps he’s simply superior on a wet track?

With horse racing there is always next week……..Let’s look at the best value futures bets for the Caulfield Cup meeting……….

Fabergino – Will line up in the Caulfield Sprint over 1000m on Saturday.  Forget it went around in the Moir Stakes……..Didn’t jump with them, failed to lead as is customary, was caught wide, completely forgive the run.  Smashed its rivals and the clock at Flemington earlier this year, deserves another chance at $3.80 this week………

Pretty Brazen – Meets a similar field to its last start where Sierra Sue took the rails run that Pretty Brazen’s jockey didn’t spot.  Another complete forgive on that run.  Her form prior was red-hot, finishing 3rd behind Behemoth in the Rupert Clarke and a win over Arcadia Queen at Flemington.  Has opened up $5.50 in early markets, could start shorter depending on the final line-up.

CAULFIELD CUP TIPS

Dry track? Anthony Van Dyck

Wet track? Verry Elleegant

Best Roughie?  Dalasan won’t know itself with 52.5kgs…….Hasn’t done much wrong in its career, never finished further back than 5th.  Currently at $6 for the place…….

LONG-TERM FUTURES

September Rain – Has won twice up the straight at Flemington in fast time and the form has been flanked by Swats That (2nd behind S.R.) winning twice since.  The Sydney 3yos all seem to have form/injury issues so September Rain is now a big chance for the Coolmore Classic on Derby Day.  Currently at $7, could be worth throwing into a multi……..

Odeum – 3yo fillies have a great record in the Empire Rose Stakes on Derby Day.  If that is her next target, then she’ll be in it up to her ears.  Should arguably be unbeaten in her four starts, can take a position forward and will carry next to no weight on the day.  Has started at $9 in early markets………

Good luck, Coaches!!
