Best Full Forward of the 80s

by Motts on May 11, 2012

These blokes are all so good, the heading of this poll could read “of All Time” but having not seen how some of the blokes from previous decades went about it I’ll limit it to the 80s.

Tough one Pluggers got the most career goals but Ablett Snr could do things that no other player could do. So Ablett Snr for me.
1.Ablett
2.Lockett
3.Dunstall
4.Kernahan

Sticks for singing. Dunstall for playing.

Ablett was the best player of the group but in the role as full forward i’d take Dunstall. He kicked bags galore and still dished off plenty to his teammates. If he was more selfish he’d have kicked more than Lockett for sure.

I agree Roo. Ablett was a freak and is probably the player that would adapt most easily to any playing period. I would choose Dunstall for the reason you mentioned, I sometimes wished he was more selfish when I watched him play. He dished off a lot and still scored hundred after hundred.

Kernahan? Yes a good player, but when is he ever mentioned when people speak of the best full forwards such as Ablett, Lockett and Dunstall?
Not in the same league.

He probably belongs with Dermie,Carey,Brown in a “best CHF of last 30 years” poll

I would say Dunstall had better quality players delivering the ball to him and would think Plugger in that situation would have been even more unstoppable. Ablett was a freak but didn’t play true full forward position. Ablett would kill any player one on one but I imagine if there was a sprint down the wing todays’ footballers would outlast god.

Kernahan?!?!? Turn it up! What’s he doing in this poll??

Was a good player but it’s always only ever been the big three, plugger, dunstall and Ablett. Kernahan a long way back.

Great poll Motts! Im having flashbacks of me as a kid collecting those footy cards with the sticks of gum inside.

Personally, Plugger for me as he was the true prototype of what a big strong goal kicking full forward should be….The likes of A.Lynch, W.Tredrea, S.Rocca, M.Lloyd etc owe their footy careers to this man.

Why is Ablett there? I don’t even think he won a Coleman until 93 or 94. Dunstall was the best full forward of the 80′s. Warwick Capper went alright too.

I went with Dunstall mainly due to my bias as a Hawks supporter but as a youngster growing up I loved watching him play.
As well the supreme delivery he received he had one other minor advantage he never had to play on one of the best best full backs going around in Chris Langford.
I would have loved to see those two go at it on a regular basis.

Langford and Mew are two of the greatest defenders that I have seen in my footy life.

Warwick Capper all the way… no one man left an impact on the game more than this man in the 80′s… IMO Ablett, Dunstall and Lockett all did their best, and most memorable, work in the 90′s.

Disco Roach should be the 4th bloke in this poll, but he would finish 4th. Sticks was a great CHF and even better skipper. Ablett the best player, Plugger the best FF – kicked regular bags in a very ordinary saints team and in a pretty good swans team. Also a very scary man.

80s? These guys were all bigger in the 90s except for Sticks who wasn’t a FF

You missed the ACTUAL best VFL FF in terms of goals kicked in the 80s. No, not Roach, Jacko or Templeton. Simon Beasley!

Go on, look it up. The bookie’s done you over. Again.

Sticks shouldn’t even be in the same poll as Plugger,GOD and the simian.
I’d have Diacos in to round out the freak forwards as 2 vs 2 pure full forwards.
You could even whack in the fish if you were so inclined, although his knee injury stunted his career.
How about Bernie Quinlan? Or even Malcolm Blight?

If we are talking the “80′s” here is a shout out to one Bernie Quinlan. Won the Brownlow in 1981, Coleman twice in 1983/84 & could he of been the best punter the NFL had ever seen?? Better known as “SUPERBOOT”

Dunstall although only playing half the years in the 80′s, managed 3 premierships 1986/88/89, 2 coleman medals 1988/89 & kicked 124 & 128 respectivley. Equal 2nd in the Brownlow in 1988 & equal 3rd in 1989.

If we were talking 1987-1992, Dunstall & Lockett won the coleman 5 out of the 6 occasions, only being seperated in 1990 when John “Horse” Longmire won kicking 98 stopping a clean sweep.

In regards to this thread, my votes are as follows…

3 votes……..Jason “Piggy/Bunghole/Chief” Dunstall
2 votes……..Bernie “Superboot” Quinlan
1 vote ………Tony “Plugger” Lockett

Plugger gets it over GAS for being a proper old school, genuine full forward and for throwing shit at Eddie Macguire.

I got one from left field. Does anyone remember Grenville Dietrich frOm the sanfl. A true stay at home full forward that could take a grab and kick bags. A mate of mine used to play darts with him and apparently under mick nunan there was a 50 dollar fine for not turning up to pre season training sessions. Big Grenville walked into micks office with his cheque book and wrote out a cheque for 350$ and said that’s for not coming to any training sessions.

A quick one that no one probably read as this thread looks dead…..
My old man reckons John Coleman was the best FF he ever saw. (60′s or 50′s)
Apparently he could leap a mile.
