Best Grand Final

Written by Motts on March 30 2011

Slow news day today so here’s something a little different. What is the best GF you’ve ever watched?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. 08…watching all those over confident geelong supporters walk out of the G half way through the last qtr was the best moment of my life.

PS: obviously im a hawks supporter 🙂

  2. Collingwood smacking the saints in 2010. Make this thread this time next year and I’ll say Collingwood smacking some mob in 2011.. This trend will continue for at least 5 years running

  3. Threw it in there for our Adelaide brethren. I was living in Adelaide at the time and the amount of hoopla surrounding the Crows B2B victories was off the chart.

  4. same! ’09 was amazing. The only difference in the two teams in my mind was Raphael Clarke, everytime he got the ball he either turned it over or did something stupid and it landed in the cats laps. If Maxy had played we would have won, plain and simple. But yes, GREAT game.

  5. My favourite obviously ’04 when the Power knocked over the almighty Brisbane Lions, but the best one I’ve seen was in ’89 when Gaz snr booted 9 goals wins NSM, Dermie being hit hard and the 6pt victory to the Hawks. Amazing day!

  6. 2003 … Sam Newmans quotes on the grand final DVD are pretty damn priceless.

    At half time:

Dermie: There’s no need to panic, football is a funny game, Pies still have a chance… (insert cliche here)

Newman: Well if I were Collingwood I’d start panicking right now…

There was also a Shaun Hart related joke in there after he copped one high.

Dermie: It looks like he got grazed on the helmet there Sammy.

Newman: You might just want to clarify what you mean by helmet Derm.

And then the Pies got smashed… happy days.

  7. being a eagles supporter (no shit please) i would give a bias view on the eagles and swans grand finals in 2005 and 2006 would be the best ive seen , but the drawn match last year would have to be right up there..

  8. 05, purely cause of the memorable tingling that came along with the commentary towards the end, it was a huge build up. and leo barry’s mark at the end made a perfect final commentary call. right up there with the jesaulenko call.

for me, an essendon supporter, to say that bout to interstate sides, i think is a big call. 🙂 but in a grand final its the most memorable.

  9. Geelong 07. I know, I know, over by half time. At the time, being a long suffering Geelong supporter, could finally die a happy man.

  11. Cannot believe that 2009 Cats V Saints is so easily forgotten. Scarlett’s toe poke to Ablett for Chappy to goal is akin to Harmes’ punch back into play from his own kick (’79). Stuff of footy folklore…no more than 10 points between them all day and you don’t rank it!!!!! Just beats ’05. ’06 and ’10 in a golden era for GF’s. If you want other all time classics from other eras, try Teddy Hopkins and the Blues in ’70, Tigers kicking 22 goals and the Blues a staggering 28 goals in ’72 and the Tiger’s blood thirsty revenge in ’73 with Laurie Fowler cleaning up Big Nick with the best shirtfront in GF history and Balmey taking out Geoff Southby with the best left cross since Rocky was a boy. He’d get 12 weeks for it nowdays.

  12. Being at the 06 GF was a highlight of my life.

Especially given I was at the 05 game.

Cried both times, for different reasons obviously.

Still get shivers up my spine watching the reply at the 31 minute mark of the last quarter in 06 – Ump throws ball in on Sydney’s HF line, big Coxy gets the tap out, clock ticks over to 31.00, then WWAAAAHHHHH, siren, all over, 1 point victory, you beauty.

  14. It’s funny how quickly footy can come full circle – Throughout 04, 05, 06, 07 all we were hearing about was the dire state of Victorian footy, teams were merging, off to the GC, the interstate invasion was here to stay.

Fast forward 4 years and the top 8 is 90% Victorian, the Eagles have finished stone cold last and all of a sudden interstate footy is the one reeling!

But you’re right Deano, feels like yesterday. And yes, damn Judd. I can’t bring myself to damn Cuzzy yet, as my SC team name will show you, felt he was harshly dealt with by the club and still hold on to some resentment towards them, not him, as a result. He got away with a lot, but he gave us plenty and deserved more.

    Rant over 😉

  15. I did enjoy the 80s!

If my memory serves me correctly, your boys won 3 in the 80s. That’s not too bad?!
