Best/Worst Trades Of 2018

Written by Schwarzwalder on June 27 2018

Wighty requested your Best & Worst Trades for the year in the Polling Station on Monday.

Like many other Coaches, I started the season with Hibberd & Billings.  I held onto Billings far too long (till Rd10) but luckily got rid of Hibberd after Rd4 (still at $455k) and brought in Clayton Oliver.  Not a single regret there!

My worst trade of the year would have to be Adam Treloar last week…..but seriously, how were we to know?

Which moves do you consider to be the game-breakers and shift-shapers for your side this season?  Tell us all about it, Coaches…….

  1. Not me personally, but I know a lot of people did a double upgrade last week to bring in Andrews and Treloar. That one’s gotta sting.

  2. Haven’t had any real injury related trades just yet and most of my bad trades were the rookies that played 3 games. However, I started with Beams and he had a shocking start to the season and i probably shouldnt have started with him but i traded him out in round 3. This is where i think i could have made a massive change. I brought in dusty at 650k! He has only played a handful of good games and is now sub 500k. I could have used that money in so many different places. That’s how the cookie crumbles however.

  3. After Menegola scored 74 and 57 in R1 & 2 i got cold feet and traded him to Greene… Menegola score 120+ the following two weeks and Greene got injured.

  4. Only trade in regret is Z.Merrett – have a soft spot for him. He’s turning it around slowly.

Starting Billings, Lambert, Buddy (4 week injury), Kreuzer and Hibberd pretty much meant most of my trade ins were actually good but set my team up for fail from the start. The best by far was Kreuzer to Grundy Rd5 and Hibberd to Simpson Rd3.

My forward trades have been somewhat a fail. Gunston last week for an injured 74 wasn’t great and McLean for 2 weeks (52/86) is not what I was hoping for. Walters dished me up a 92/64 and then a suspension to follow.

Looking forward to 2019 and just going to bat out this innings.

  5. Worst trades definitely revolved around my lack of common sense for a period where I picked up Suns and Power players to cover the byes. I held the likes of Billings, Dunkley and Fisher for that precise purpose (see it can get worse)!!

Brought in Boak, Rockliff, MIller and Ainsworth and only scored about one decent week from each even though they were short term strategies (had 20 trades at the byes). Got enough points to pick up a few thousand ranks over the byes using all nine trades. Holding Bonner was almost a win but he’s the next downgrade as I have six premo mids. He and Ainsworth like to become Kelly.

  6. Best trade was Lobb to McLean when Lobb got injured the first time. Worst was probably Keefe to Murphy because I wanted quick cash.

  7. I started with Lambert his first 3 weeks pissed me off so I went Lambert to Toby greene before round 4. Lambert went on to score tons in 4 of his next 5 and Toby greene got injured in round 5.
Lambert has been terrible since those tons though.

Because greene got injured I traded him to Robbie Gray which hasnt been too bad

  8. Trading in Hurley for 550k just before his injury in round 8 rather than Yeo or Simpson (they were both around 50k cheaper and have scored literally double the points in that time).
    Trading in Mutch over Ronke.
Nothing stands out as a best trade unfortunately

  9. Best trades:
Some early corrective trading like Zorko to Macrae straight away after Zorko’s 32 start when Macrae was still a POD and rode the VC/C train for a while
Hibbered to Simpson in Rd 2
Kelly to Oliver when he was injured.

    Worst trades:
Not terrible trades but some poor rookie choices hurt in hindsight, like trading out Fritsch for Guelfi when Fritsch was dropped and Guelfi was then dropped for a couple weeks and Fritsch has since been flying. Only painful because I could’ve traded Fogarty
    Spargo instead of Ronke
Getting in both Mirra and Ridley as they were dropped the week after and having to trade after minimal cash growth to keep with bye strategy

  10. swapping back and forth a million times at season start between Zorko and Oliver also Jacobs and Grundy…eventually locking in Zorko and Jacobs ffs!…side traded Zorks to Oliver just as he started to score ok though had lost big $$$ and same with Sauce to Grrrundy
Best trade – upgrade to Ollie 3 weeks ago as he began beast mode

  11. Bringing in Matt Crouch in R8, scored 1 or 2 tons & multiple sub 80’s. Also bringing Liam Ryan back in for a 50 & 30 was good too!!

Best trade prior to his injury was getting Macrea in the week before he went nuts!!

  12. Trades done in various ways such as straight swap or via DPP

Hibberd to Simpson – rd 3 – (win)
Kelly to Coniglio – rd 4 – (not the best move but the cash came in handy later)
    Billings to Gray – rd5 – (win)
Petracca to Mundy – rd6 (fail)
Dusty to TMac – rd12 (looking OK so far)
Savage to Yeo – rd14 (looking OK so far)

Yes I was trigger happy and reading so many comments on here did have me thinking I was mad to go so early on trading out”Premiums”.

Given the same scenarios again I would probably only change the Mundy pick.

This week with the cash in the bank I am looking at going Nankervis to Grundy for much the same reason as most of those previous trades where my initial choice just hasn’t performed.

  13. Guess its only fair that I make a contribution.
Best…Spargo for Wines immediately after Port bye..(with apologies to TMac)
Worst…no real disasters but Fritsch to T Smith I could have done without.

  14. Best Trade is probably Libba after his Round 1 injury to Simmo.

Worst Trades were Naughton to Bonner and then Trading Bonner to Coniglio when he maxed out at 550k whilst averaging 116ppg.

  15. Best was taking a chance on starting rocky but upgrading to Oliver before price change.
Worst trade not getting on macre before he went nuts. But it had a silver lining.

  16. Worst: Naughton to Bonner :O could have been so much worse if Naughton continued to make money & Zerrett to Cogs. Two wasted bad trades based on limited evidence.

Best: Banfield to Macrae prior to R7, Finlayson to Yeo, getting Ed Richards and Ronke as handy rookies,

  17. Best trades have to be trading out Billings at R5 for R Gray, and Hibberd out the week after for Simpson. And starting with Laird, Cogs, Cripps, Bont, Fyfe, T Mitchell, Gawn, Heeney, McLean, D Smith & mostly the right rookies in Doedee, Naughton, Holman, T Kelly & Fritsch

Worst trades – generally happy with all my choices, except maybe M Crouch in at R8 and he’s worth $46k less now and has only just scraped into the low 100’s twice.

  18. Best: Jacobs to Grundy,
    Worst: Deledio, Bont to Dusty
    Held: Billings

Current team: 7 trades left $75,300

DEF: McDonald, Sicily, Yeo, Laird, Simpson, Savage… Rice, Mihicek

MID: Fyfe, Mitchell, Oliver, Cripps, Wines, Parker, Coniglio, Martin… Phillips, Ahern, Giro

    RUC: Grundy, Gawn… Olango

FWD: Heeney, Gray, Menegola, Smith, Walters, Billings… T.Smith, Keefe

  19. Best
Brayshaw and Rioli to Taranto and English before Round 3
Kreuzer to Gray before Round 4

Completely changed my season, got Gray in who has been my F1-F2 since, had English hold down R2 until I got Grundy in Round 7 and got Taranto who averaged 83 until I traded him out on his bye

Rioli and Kreuzer both got injured after I traded them out, and got 100k more cash out of English vs Brayshaw

  20. R*Round

    Best Trades
    Hibberd – Simpson R3
    Kelly – Macrae R4
    Billings – Gray R5
    Finalyson – Sicily R8
    Doedee – Yeo R9

    Worse Trades
Langdon – Venables R1 then trading Venables out back to Langdon R6..
    Murray – Merrett R7 (Been Mediocore :/)

  21. I reckon that I just about win this one.

    Worst:
    – Upgrading to Treloar last week instead of Kelly like many people did
    – Getting rid of Jacobs due to his 3 round average of 46 for him to put up 3 good scores before the bye
    – Getting rid of Petracca after 2 40s when he put up 3 good scores in a row after that
    – Getting rid of Doedee instead of Murray in round 9.
    – Getting rid of Zorko right before his 164 and return to playing decent footy.
    – Choosing Charlie Curnow as my swap for Ellis after 2 rounds
    – Buying Matt Crouch

On the other hand my best would be
    – Tom Mcdonald in round 10
    – Luke Ryan in round 4

  22. Holding Billings until he gets dropped. Then he comes out and gets 53 disposals in the VFL, then comes back to the AFL team and gets 100 after all the time I held him.

    2

  23. Best trades:
    Ryan(dockers) from start
    Libba – Hoff week 2
    Zorko pre 164 performance
    Jpk pre 151 performance
Taranto from – start during 90+ run

    Worst trades:
    Tkelly – pre 133 performance
    Walter’s week before suspension
    Spargo instead of ronke
Traded out lloyd week 5! Based of bad run under 100’s

  24. Great reading. I suggest for a better understanding of SC….all AFL coaches in future years should be required to enter a team…in the one league !! There is 18 of them…perfect !!

  25. Best trade: Josh Kelly to Macrae and captained him for a month.

Worst trades: last week did Macrae to Treloar (instead of Kelly) and got Redman in.

Kept the faith with Billings and Hibberd all year and still have them, hoping they come good eventually.

    2

  26. Best: Probably the “correctional” Lambert to Gray in round 3. It looked bad for a while, but Kane has really dropped off lately, while Robbie is averaged 20 ppg more.

Worst: Tossing up between Crouch and Macrae in round 8, and going for Crouch because he was cheaper and I thought they would score about the same for the rest of the year. Numbskull!

  27. Best Trades:
    Round 3:
    Out: M Crouch
    In: C Oliver

    Round 4:
    Out: J McGovern
    In: I Heeney

    Round 7:
    Out: A Christensen, J Garlett,
    In: B Ronke, T McLean ($515,000)

    Round 8:
    Out: B Banfield
In: D Zorko ($425,700, avg in team of 107.33 from 6)

    Round 9:
    Out: J Finlayson
In: E Yeo ($531,300, avg in team of 108 from 5)

    Round 13:
    Out: C Spargo, M Guelfi
In: R Gray ($495,600 lowest price of season, avg in team of 106.5 from 2) , C Wingard ($375,800, avg in team of 97 from 2 )

    Worst Trades:
    Round 3:
    Out: Z Giles-Langdon
In: L Ryan (injured in rd3 and traded in rd4)

    Round 11:
    Out: S Lycett
In: M Kreuzer (avg in team of 77.67 from 3, will be traded for T Goldstein/B Grundy in rd15)

    Round 14:
    Out: T Doedee
In: H Andrews (will now be traded for a d7 such as S Hurn, A Brayshaw, etc in rd16-rd17)

  28. Best was Getting Zorko in round 6 for a bargain price . Worst was getting Touhy in a panic to cover doughnuts thinking he might hit form and become premo

  29. Jack Bloody Billings

Watching him in my FWD line made me feel sick to my stomach. Not what I paid for….

Sure, trade him out, but every week something worse happened and I had to be stuck with him.

Sorry Jack, you can get stuffed mate!!!

  30. What about those who started with Dangerfield. Not technically a trade but starting at 750 K and dropping nearly 200 grand.

    1. That’s starting team though, not best / worst trades. I feel I’ve done well with trades this year but starting with Danger hurt me as the cash would have been handy elsewhere.

      BEST – probably a toss-up between:
Grundy in for Kreuzer in round 4 (when Kreuzer was 600k and Grundy was 555k).
Billings to McLean in round 5.

      WORST –
Ryan and Kennedy in for Guelfi / Spargo. Not that keeping those two was an option, just not happy with Ryan (brought back too early from injury) and Kennedy (2-3 weeks from here due to injury). Was tossing up between Gray and Kennedy so I could afford another upgrade the week after and, yeah, definitely would have made more sense to go with Gray.

  31. Traded in Walters the week before he got injured. Traded in buddy the week he scored 50 and got injured. Held both. Traded Crouch in when he’d supposedly bottomed out. Was looking at other options at the time. Other than that poor rookie choices. Murphy, Duman, Ridley, J.Smith(last week) all come to mind. Have burnt so many trades on rookies who have made next to nothing yet still made full premo. Lucky I held Doedee, Fritsch and Kelly

  32. Best:

Without question, my best two trades came in round 9, when I brought in Jack Crisp for $448K, just before his output exploded. Average since then: 112. That round, I also brought in Zach Tuohy for just $361K. He’s averaged 91 since that time.

An honourable mention goes to my trading Brandon Ellis to Kade Simpson in round 3. As an aside, with Ellis looking like he has turned the corner, he found his way back into my side two weeks ago for $369: as a D7. This means that in addition to having a complete team, I also have bench cover that, thanks to the magic of DPP, allows me to cover a short-term injury on any line except the ruck, without needing to put a rookie on the field. If there are no injuries to cover, I am also able to loophole a DEF and/or FWD to try to gain maximum points.

It’s possible that Ellis will revert to his early-season crapness, or that he will get injured (although that’s never happened to him before), making this trade a bust. But if, as I suspect, he truly has turned the corner, this could end up being my best trade of all.

    Worst:

Waiting until round 5 to cut Zorko and Billings loose. Bringing in Dustin Martin for Zorko wasn’t particularly brilliant, either.

Trading an injured Zac Giles-Langdon to Liam Ryan in round 3, only for the latter to also get injured that week. It did end up making some quick cash, but it meant that one injury ended up costing me two trades. Heading into the last 9 rounds with just 4 left, that extra one would be quite handy right now.

  33. Best:
Swapping Franklin out for Oliver Round 6
It meant I had T Kelly at M8 and Fritsch at F6.

    Worst:
Getting Treloar last F*#ing week 🙁
    Also..keeping Mother Hibberd
