Birchall v Adcock

Written by Motts on June 19 2012

As of the completion of R12, Birch and + have both scored the same amount of points for the year. That makes it an interesting exercise to see which one you’d take. Disregard that Birchall has a bye this week. If you were looking at them purely on their merits alone, which player would you pick?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. I think Birchall wins for a number of reasons.

Durability – Adcock has missed 22 games over the last 3 1/2 years, while Birchall has missed 7 over the same period.

Last two years – Adcock averages have been 68.4 and 90.4, while Birchall has averaged 79.5 and 94.

Teams – This comes from consistency of position, through the place that their side is at. Hawthorn, despite some shaky performances, are relatively set as a 22. Birchall has a position, he nearly always plays that position and scores accordingly. Brisbane are far from Hawthorn. Adcock can go from deep defense to an attacking midfielder (al la Greg Broughton) and his scores suffer accordingly.

Consistency – Following from to the above, Adcock has had low scores of 59, 60 and 77 against high scores of 120, 122 and 140 (his only scores over 100). Shows you that he can go big, but can also go missing. The perfect guy if you want to take a risk, have a POD player or are going for a weekly prize. Birchall has had low scores of 68, 71 and 83 against his highs of 103, 107 and 122. Seven of his ten games are between 83 and 107, great consistency of scores.

I think that Birchall ticks all of the boxes. That being said, I want a defender this week, so I will likely take Jed…

  2. I grappled with this very decision last week. Went with Birchall in the end but have to admit it was hard seeing Adcock go big last weekend. Think Birchall will be the best pick in the long run though with his consistency and the Hawks style of play.

  3. Birchall wins out due to his consistency over the last few seasons & the fact that he’s the least injury prone outta the two. Plus playing for a winning side is always a bonus in regards to SC points. Though its good to see jed adcock finally getting into some good form & could be a nice pick next season

    Suckling: T/U
    Adcock: T/D

  5. Hey guys this may seem very random, but what happens if there is a draw in the SUPERCOACH Grand Final?? Please don’t tell me we have a Grand Final replay.

  6. I took Adcock last week. He nabbed 120 and helped seal the win.
I feel good about that. Guess he’ll have to average +95 to keep on making me feel good about it..

  7. Birchall for consistency and for being less injury prone (though Adcock clearly has the greater points ceiling).

  8. I’d take Birchall, much more consistent, can score big and you know his role won’t change.

However Adcock has massive upside. His 2007 season was amazing. 22 games played and a 110.7 average playing predominantly midfield iirc. Last year he was averaging 108 up till round 10 when he injured his hand and was sent into lock down mode in defence by Vossy. Currently playing mainly midfield but injuries to Hanley (hamstring issues?) or Drummond who is a ticking timebomb might see him back there. Or it could mean Docherty debuts. Win win for everyone :D!
