BS Rookie Review Round 1

Written by Big Sexy on March 29 2011

Welcome back to another SuperCoach season of Big Sexy’s Rookie Reviews.  First off, I hope none of you got sucked in to getting the Relton Roberts of 2011, Brad Helbig of the Tiges is likely that man, and it is easy to get sucked in knowing he is playing midfield and named on the ground for the Tiges in the first match pre-partial lockout.  However, there is a good reason none of us had heard of him (even I gave him consideration after teams were announced on Wed).   Be sure to scroll down to the bottom to see all the round 1 rookie data.  Getting straight into it:

My Top Five Rookie’s (<$200k) of the week:
1) L Tapscott (Fwd 110k) Plays a very courageous game and has a far more solid frame than expected for a new-comer to the seniors. Tapscott was named on the wing and got plenty of the ball racking up a lazy 113 SC points in round 1. No doubt he cemented himself a gig for at least another week (possibly many more). Tapscott picked up 19 disposals, took 7 marks and laid 1 tackle. Tapscott was taken at pick 18 in the 2009 national draft and missed most of 2010 after having hip surgery.
2) C Pederson (Def 109k)A mature age recruit at age 24, rookie listed, and a big fella standing 193cm played with Box Hill Hawks last season. Pederson had a great first up game spending quite a bit of time in the ruck and collecting 20 disposals, 5 marks an 3 tackles….. scoring him a sensational 114 SC points in his first up run.
3) E Curnow (Mid 107k) You wouldn’t believe I watched the Blues and Tiges in the season opener, and whilst trying to just sit back and watch the game whilst tweaking my SC team on my laptop. I was so focused on keeping a eye on rookie Duigan, and the other Blues and Tiger Premiums, that I hardly saw or noticed this guy….. then the scores come out, and he is the best scoring rookie midfielder in the comp with 118 SC points. Curnow picked up 24 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal and 7 tackles…. Pretty solid for a rookie listed player. Curnow was on the Crows list 2008, and spent 2009 in the VFL at Box hill.
4) N Lower (Def 110k) I was gutted that I opted to play Duigan on the field instead of Lower who was my emergency. Lower is another rookie listed player who was recruited from Norwood in SA and played 20 games with Port Adel between ‘06-‘09. Lower was in amongst the best players on the ground and picked up 22 disposals, 3 marks, 1 goal and 6 tackles… all this lead to a very tidy 110 SC points. He will be starting on the field for me next week!
5) R Tarrant (Def 184k)Would you believe the injury prone Tarrant was the highest scoring Rookie of Round 1. I didn’t give him top billing, due to his higher price tag. However, Taz-junior picked up 21 disposals, took 8 marks, and laid 6 tackles in a stellar effort that scored him an awesome 119 SC points.

Here is the rookie data for you to analyse in your spare time, and form your own opinions:

  1. Great work, BS. Can’t see Pederson (you’re Pederson, you’re Pederson, to me – sung to Little Birdy) scoring that highly once Goldstein gets over his bug. Looking forward to seeing who can back it up in R2!

  2. Yeah, not sure he can back it up…. next week will be interesting, then he has a bye. Though he did get a big wrap on Footy Classifides last night.

  3. Heppell is one of my favorites… score of 90 is very solid. I should have mentioned that for round 1, I took the top 5 scores and just changed the orer to suit. It wont be like that for the rest of the season.

  4. Prob worth mentioning….. scores aside, I think the best players I have seen & heard reviews about are Heppell, Tapscott, Lower & McKernan.

  6. Smasher, I played Duigan instead of Lower…… but live-and learn. We’ll all see it at some stage…. Hell, I had Selwood and was watching the game, when he was almost killed, my first thought was “oh crap, my SC team”….. Seriously, The rookies are pretty good this year, I can see two reasons, (1) there seemed be a lot more retirements last year for some reason opening opportunity (2) because of the Suns stealing all the draft picks, and the Cats & Dockers sucess with mature age rookies like Pods and Barlow, I see a lot more clubs turning to mature age rookies…. this in-turn means bigger bodies, less development time, and better suited to stepping up to the seniors….. all IMO.

  7. Good rite-up BS, need some help from all you SCTers, Easton Wood was my point of difference and was hoping for good things, alas, his ankle is busted and I need to get him out, I’ll bench him for Rd 2 and watch who under the $291,200(remaining cash ) I can bring in. I have some of the usual suspects already ( Lower, Heppel, Duigan, Coad, and Otten ) Who else should I be looking at?
Reckon Toy(GCS) might go ok this Rd. Any insight much appreciated.

  8. You’d have to have a look at how Robbie Tarrant goes this week, as well as all the GC kids.

As mentioned already, I don’t think you can have much faith in Pedersen’s scoring ability when Goldstein comes back.

  9. Spot on Dob…. this week we find out if any of the Suns boys can actually play….. Giller, you have Coad, so keep your eye on Toy and Stanley…… I think Wood going down and forcing you to trade is a blessing…. glass is half-full.

  10. What about a poll saying Heppel Vs Swallow…after the weekend I don’t know if Swallow can break into my mids…

  11. I thought there was a few rooks that played well even though they had average scores, Conca, Bewick, Pttard, Gaff and Lester, all these guys showed they have the ability to smash out a 100 now and again.

  12. what’s everyone’s plans for the Gold Coast Rookies, any of the established first-teamers in your side making way for Swallow, Toy etc???

  13. Agreed, I’d add Duigan, Libba jnr, and Batchelor too as blokes who didn’t look out of place in the big time

  14. Happy enough with Tapscott to trade LeCras out for him this week and having 300K in the bank for future use.

Not expecting 100 every week and it’ll be hard to pick the right one of Tapscott, Darling, Richardson and Matera for that last on-field spot, but I can see big dollars from these players coming weeks and that means, obviosuly, being able to trade up to another premium.

  15. Well first off all my adelaide players will be on the bench…. Otten, McKernan and Starnger Danger…. and a few have long-cock. I will starting Spitz, Harris, & Toy.

  16. Tapscott would be a good investment….. if looking for someone more established, check out Dangerfield (not this week as has the bye)

  17. Thanks BS. I’ve still got I Smith on the pine so its good to see he’s pressing for selection.
I think Poo will almost be a Def keeper once he gets a game so hopefully Clarko will hold off for a few more weeks so there’s some fat on them thar cows.

  18. I’m trying to work out whether to throw Petrie in this week or stick with Tapscott..tough call esp as Petrie is up against the Pies

  19. I’m thinking of keeping Duigan on over Toy – just want to see how Toy goes before throwing him in

    0

  20. only have Otten, so Toy can slot in there.

might dump foley for his woeful showing last week and bring in Swallow, he’ll surely get at least 70+?

Also have Z.Smith & Matera but will leave them on the bench this round.

  21. for sure Deano…. I need a mid/fwd rookie dpp…. so hoping Smith steps it up in about 3-4 weeks.

  23. Got a fair bit of Spare cash. Thinking of upgrading Adcock this week to Gibbs or H Taylor.

Dont want to wait 1 more week as I’ll probably bring in 2 of those Delicious Rookies above after R2.

    Who’s the better buy?

    0

  24. No. Give the man a chance, he had gastro. You picked him for a reason (I hope!) Maybe downgrade him to a performing rookie, but only after round 2. Have another look at him against the Saints.

    0

    0
  25. i also have foley, will give him one more week to turn it around and keep my fingers crossed my faith was worth it.

  26. Another option Nicoski maybe? If he can keep his spot in the side and stay fit ofcourse……

  27. i have foley aswell and actually very disappointed at the tigez for keeping it quiet for the week…………..i yelled at the TV when he came off and I was told he had gastro and the tigers kept it quiet,
RICHMOND DO YOU UNDERTSAND YOU COST ME A SOLID SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!’
Very disappointed with 2097, but add Selwood back up to something like 110, and Foley up to 75 at least, the that would give me 2230 which is around what i averaged last year.
And am i taking a risk by keeping Selwood and Foley?
As most i dont want to wate my trades with 2 in after the first week.

    0

    0
  28. I think the tigers will wont make the same mistake this week with foley , if he is unfit they wont play him . foley is too good of a player to be a sub . At lest foley has a good excuse .

    0

  29. Gibbs. You would have to think that he’ll be more consistant.

Also, Taylor may have benefitted from the strage game that the Cats and Saints played. Remember, Taylor, Enright and even Scarlett got above average scores due to the kick to kick game.

  30. Hello, hello, hello. We’ve got another Brad.

Although, I do have Foley… and I was kinda wondering if I should trade out Foley… did I logon on to SCTalk while I was asleep? Maybe… Um, Brad, if I’m not writing to myself, would you mind altering your name a tad? So I don’t get confused again.

    Cheers, to you, or me.

  32. Just quietly, why are all these muppets trading out Selwood? Even if he misses one game, you then waste a trade, and surely everyone remembers how fantasic a player he is. AND surely everyone had the GC bench cover of Harris and Swallow anyway?

    Mupps.

  34. Leo Barry on the mark

Leo Barry’s mark in the 2005 Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final cemented the Premiership for Sydney. Leo Barry is suing the AFL and gaming company Tabcorp for using an image of the mark in advertising, without his permission. Barry claims this is misleading, and seeks damages upwards of $50,000. A preliminary Federal Court hearing is fixed for 20 November. The case could extend the concept of “character merchandising” in Australia.

  35. “Woeful showing” ??!! He was subbed off as he had bad gastro all week – that’s like saying Joel Selwood put in an astonishingly poor performance against St Kilda as he didn’t even score 30 SC points. Hardwick admitted he shouldn’t have even played. Foley also has a MUCH higher ceiling than D. Swallow. Still, it’s your team.

  36. What a great rivalry.
I’m not sure whether it was because my team was playing, but IMO some of the games we played, have to go down as the best of decade.

    0

    0
  37. In his post he already said he has Matera AND McKernan, and these two are the only ones you suggest to him as possible additional rookies to include in his team – are you having a laugh or what ??

    0

    0
  38. Yep, that’s faith – give a player 2 games (one of which was played under intense duress/illness) to impress and then burn a trade to get rid of him … I wish ALL my Supercoach opponents were as faithful to the players they chose, the game would be so much easier !!

    0

    0
  39. Let ’em go and trade out their Selwoods and their Foleys after one round – the more people who play Supercoach this way, the better our scores look in comparison 🙂

    0

    0
  40. woeful in terms of points, i know he was sick and subbed off.
just gutted i had selwood as well as foley and looking for someone to blame.

your more reasoned avenue of thought have renewed my confidence in foley. cheers!

  41. Bummer – both in the one team was more than a little harsh on you last round … still, the only way is up from here !! 🙂

  42. Crabster
    FS1 are currently replaying Rd 1 2006.
In 5 min’s I’ve heard Robert Walls say “the kicking skills of the Eagles are sublime” and Huddo commenting that they “have the fifth youngest list in the league.”
Alot can happen in 4 years! Seems like a lifetime ago.

  43. Pity you already have Selwood – he’d make a great upgrade after the price changes – if you’re not intending to upgrade Foley into GAJ straight away, it would be nice to get another Richmond, Port or Essendon player so that you don’t have to cover their byes before the (likely?) upgrade to GAJ after Round 9.

  44. Sounds like the same rubbish as the pies this year.

On a similiar topic – I don’t get why “the experts” bother tipping top 8’s for the end of the year. Mike Sheahan for example said today he didn’t even think it would change from last year with pies to win again… until the bombers won rnd 1. Of course the pies look like super heroes, but so did geelong after their 07ship (who were!), hawks were meant to dominate for 5 years after their 08ship (didn’t), and every other team except port (due to them being at the top for some time, but just not winning one)

Not really going out on a limb. If you said something like the dogs won’t make the 8, nor will Carlton, but Melbourne and Adelaide would, then that would be different. And Geelong to win the flag (odd year), then that would be something worth reading!

    Geelong (premiers)
    St Kilda
    Melbourne
    Collingwood
    Sydney
    Hawthorn
    Adelaide
    Richmond

  45. Check Harry’s preseason as well though. He’s been pretty strong all the way through and looks like the new game plan at the cattery is suiting him.

Having said that if you can afford Gibbs he’ll smash Harry.

  46. At the game on the weekend and the most impressive rookie I saw (inc. games watched on TV) was Jack Darling. His closing speed over 5 yds and agility in changing direction was amazing given he’s 6’4″. IMO he will play all year and hopefully they can get some aerobic base into him to play midfield when our finals cause is lost. Reminds me incredibly of C Judd from 2002.
Just hope he keeps off the P155.

  47. OK it’s time for some sinning. I think I’m going to trade out Yarran straight up (and head-butt the fridge for picking him in the first place) and what’s more I’m basically going to side-swap him for Fyfe.

Just pissed me off so much Thursday night. If he can be blanketed so easily by a nobody like Matthew White then what hope does he have against decent opposition?

NB. I do already have Darling, Tapscott, Richo, Prestia, Matera and McKernan (in DEFS).

    Right, abuse away…………..

  48. He’s the sort of player who seems to have that extra second when he’s got the pill to make a decision and then execute it with relative ease. Was difficult for him early to come on as a sub in a surprisingly hard fought contest however when he picked up the pace of the game he made more seasoned midfielders look a bit one paced. Has very good vision and presence which obviously helps his decision making.
Its about time we got rewarded from a 1st Rd midfield pick.

  49. I don’t know about you guys but I’m finding bomber supporters rather amusing at the moment. I was talking to my mate today who said “how awesome is the anzac day clash gonna be, both teams will probably go in undefeated!”

Yeah only the swans, saints and blues to get past in the meantime.

    0

  50. Why not put Yarran on the bench for a week if you’re that worried. You must have some GC players to come on.

  51. What is the story with Vez not even making the emergency list? I would have thought he was in front of enough guys to get a run at HFF.

  52. Same here he might of had a virus that’s what I herd but that’s just here say, he should be in this week along with Gilbes and Brake, after that dismal display of mediocrity.

  53. Got plenty of cover just hate the idea of having $300+ sitting on the bench.

I’ve got Tapscott and Prestia on the field at this stage (with the above mentioned on the bench). I could bring in Matera who might have a good day and get me 70 but I really think I would rather get another ton from Fyfe. He averaged 111 preseason, knocked out 117 last week and with all the holes in Freos midfield I reckon he will keep feeding off Sandi for a few more weeks yet.

    Got $177+K burning a hole too 🙂

  54. Was tossing up between him and Knights as my only “midprice” option so lucky I took the latter although if he spuds it up/gets injured I can always sideway with the Crows Rd 2 bye.

    0

  55. Knights looked aright plus the promising signs was he was pushing into the middle and getting contested possies. I went with Yaz instead but I’m not worrying just yet he might be playing in the forward line this week.

  56. Dawes will definitely be one of the big improvers this year but I think more in a purely football sense. I’d be suprised if he cranked out too many more 140’s. Depends on when they play Port again.

And I wouldn’t touch Cloke with a shitty stick.

  61. Who to go for the Big (C) round 2 ?

Judd : Up against young inexperienced players of Goldcoast

Goddard : Up against richmond, last 2 games against them he scored 188 and 147

    Swan : In form
