BS Rookie Review Round 7

Written by Big Sexy on May 15 2013

I just want to make a couple of notes for all the readers of the Rookie Review:

  1. For those new to the site be sure to check out Nath’s SCT Stats across the top of the page. Here you can get all your player data including player scores and Break Evens. Also you can plug in your very own SC user/password and get all the data on your own team for free rather than paying for SC Gold (and an occasion charity Ad click will help us keep it free).
  2. Over the last few years I’ve seen our Facebook Likes very slowly creep up, and I know only a handful of readers actually click on the little ‘Like’ button over to the right based on our traffic, but if you like the Rookie Review, the BS would love to crack the magical 1000 number as we’re at 879 as I write this….. so give the SCT team a Facebook ‘Like’ and get us over the 1000 milestone..

Back to business, my Top Five Rookie’s (<$200k) of the week:

1) W Sierakowski (Def $115k) He’s a former Hawks rookie who’s been fighting for a run in the 1’s for some time. Siera is a good size for a utility being 187cm and 87kg’s which means he’s not a dinosaur and mobile enough to cover the ground and can move up onto a wing. Siera had 11 touches in his first game and 3 tackles and got 34 points, then this week he had 12 touches, 2 marks, a goal and 4 tackles bringing home 72 big ones.

2) B Kennedy (Mid/Fwd $109k) Kennedy was one of the Pies first round picks at 19, and is 174cm/76kg and just turned 19. He had the green vest in his first game and came on and impressed with 8 touches, but only got 24 points courtesy of the vest. In his second run with more game time had 11 possies, 2 marks, a goal and layed 3 tackles netting him 50 points.

3) J Hannath (Ruck $163k) Has played 3 and just had his first price hike…. But, but, but, with John Griffen doing his ACL, and the 211 monster (Sandilands) sitting on the sidelines indefinitely, Hannath has just has a JS injection the bombers would be proud of. He’s a 199cm/85kg and has been improving in each of his three runs. His scores thus far 56, 60 and 73 on the weekend and you would expect to increase if taking the number 1 ruck role.

4) J Lyons (Mid/Fwd $169k) Played three games in 2012 hence the awkward starting price. Has now played two this season and had the green vest in his first game and the red vest in his second. Lyons 10 touches 3 tackles first up earning him 53 points first up, and 19 disposals, 2 marks and a tackle against GWS earning him 50 points and if he can work his way to run out a game and avoid the vest, he could go nuts.

5) J Thurlow (Def $124k) He’s only played the one, but the Geelong gun factory just keep rolling them out. Thurlow was taken at pick 16 and is 190cm and comes from Tassie land. I thought his first half on Friday night was very impressive, and finished with 17 disposals, 5 marks, and 4 tackles brining home 77 points. The kid can definitely play, but I am worried about his JS as they have too much talent to squeeze in, and the Cats do like to do 2-3 game runs with their rookies and use the vest. Regardless, let’s see how he rolls this week and don’t pull the trigger just yet.

Here is the rookie data:

  1. Don’t forget our Twitter follows, BS!

    @SC_Talk

We tweet the teams before each game, the occasional meme, videos of Gerard Healy embarrassing himself, and if you ask nicely we’ll answer your queries – SC or medical. Mostly SC but I’m trying to branch out.

  2. Hi guys. Do you reckon Sierakowski has good JS? In need of a good downgrade in either line to allow a wines to Priddis trade. If siera has not a good JS who would be your recommendation for a quick fix. Depending on who is named on thurs too

  3. Cheers for the review BS. Been looking forward to this one.
I’d love to like SCT on Facebook but that would mean getting on Facebook which so far I have managed to avoid.
So I’d like to announce right here right now that I like SCT.

  4. Desperate for downgrade options, although he’s only played one game so far, if Thurlow get’s named this week he may be my new recruit as he does look to be the pick of the bunch to replace Stevenson or Heath. (Always been a bit of a gambler)

    Is it worth the risk?

  5. No downgrades for me this week, need to keep improving my overall score to push into the top 100.

Hartlett to Birchall (Birchall playing GWS, GC and Melb next 3)
Wines to Priddis (cheap and elite)

  6. I need a downgrade option this week. Missed the Vlastuin / Daw bubble.

Do I wear the miss and take them at $200+ price (TU)

    or

Take a punt on Thurlow or Sierakowski? (TD)

  7. Looking at my team i’m thinking that i may go Sierakowski this week, Thurlow next week and Staker the week after, all when they are on the bubble (hopefully). So many rookies down back as i’ve been upgrading elsewhere. Will trade in Stevenson, L Brown and Terlich over the next three i’d imagine.

Sierakowski is definitely a vest candidate but with a few injuries at North i’d imagine that one of the new players in may take vest duties over someone who was already in the team.

  8. Everyone keep an eye on Tanner Smith of Freo who is classed as a defender. Read his name being touted & did some research last night. If Clarke comes into the ruck & Hanneth not really up to scratch, the lad Tanner Smith sounds a good option with Freo using his height, closing speed & endurance either down back, forward or a bit of both. Played 1 already and Youtube clips certainly impressive. Being likened to a young Dustin Fletcher probably hints on him not being a great player long term, but maybe not SC scorer. http://www.fremantlefc.com.au/player-profile/tanner-smith

  9. Thanks for the heads-up on Lyons: wasn’t on my radar. I’m hoping to turn my Port fire sale into a couple of premiums.

    This round
    Stevenson – Sierakowski
Neade – Lyons (or maybe Kennedy)

    Next round
    Hutchins – Birchall/Shaw
    Matt Jones – Watson/Deledio

    Thoughts?

  11. Stevenson is going in a downgrade so a question of who for:

T/U – Lonergan (Goodes DPP back into DEF) at $140,000
T/D – Sierakowski (keep Goodes DPP in MIDs) at $115,000

  12. Who do we think has a better JS? Sierakowski or Docherty? My thinking is that if Brisbane keep losing, they will start to blood more young kids in order to get experience under their belt, whereas North will be challenging for the 8 and may be more inclined to go with the more experienced blokes ie Jacobs. Plus I reckon Docherty will be a higher scores than Siera.
So I will put it to you guys:

    T/U – Sierakowski
    T/D – Docherty
(I must add that this is assuming both are named this week)
    Cheers

  14. Hey Peeps,

Any reason people aren’t thinking about bringing Daw in? Looks like he’ll be a beast of a player. Is there something I need to know?

    Cheers.
