BS Rookie Review Round 8

Written by Big Sexy on May 21 2013

My Top Five Rookie’s (<$200k) of the week:

1)    J Thurlow (Def $124k) I said it last week, but the fact is the Geelong gun factory just keep rolling them out.  Thurlow was taken at pick 16 and is 190cm and is a Taswegian.  He looks very capable, and in reality I think he is a project player who will take a couple of seasons before he really starts dominating, but right now he’s doing his job.  In his  first run he had 17 disposals, 5 marks, and 4 tackles brining home 77 points.  This week he had 16 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles.  Warning:  I do expect he will be in and out of the team over coming weeks, especially when Rivers comes back… not to mention Chapman, Kelly and Stevie J.

2)    J Webster (Def $115k)  Not bad for a skinny, 3ft tall, 9 year old kid…. Seriously, he’s 188cm and only 74kg’s.  He had the green vest in his first run, then come on and had 9 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles scoring 33.   This week he had a full game and finished with 14 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles and monstered 85 points.

3)    E Kavanagh (Mid $139k)  Kavanagh was the Bombers 2012 first round pick and played round 18 last season having battled injury, hence the slightly inflated price.  Kavanagh is 188cm and 74kg’s and has had a staggered start this season playing back in round 3, then his second game this week in round 8.  In round 3 he had 10 disposals, 1 goal and 3 tackles scoring 35 points.  This week he had 18 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal and 2 tackles.  He also copped a big hit from Clarke in Q1 which left him pretty sore.

4)    J Witts (Ruck $115k) Whilst he’s probably not going to set the world on fire any time soon, Witts gets a run on the Rookie Review purely to provide a ruck option for those looking to downgrade, Gawn, Blikas, Daw, Sinclair etc…. Witts is a 113kg, 208cm giant drafted at pick 67 in the 2011 draft.  Played in round 6 and 5 disposals, 4 marks and 45 points, then he played his second this week having 7 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles scoring 29 points.  He also got the red vest in the 3rd quarter of both games.

5)    Split between first Gamers M Spanger (Fwd 128k) and B Staker (Def /Fwd $128k)  These two boys both had their first games of 2013 this week.  Spanger with his third club having played 26 games with West Coast and 6 games with Sydney is now with the Hawks and smashed out a lazy 17 disposals and 84 points against GWS.  Staker also having moved from West Coast to Brisbane and better known for being on the receiving end of a right hook from Big Bad Bazza and having his eyes roll back into head.  Staker is recovering from two knee recos and was lucky enough to kick the sealer on the weekend having had 12 disposals, 6 marks kicking a goal scoring 73 points.  Hold fire on both till next week if you can!

  1. Thanks Big Sexy.
Traded in Thurlow last week, Webster this week & thinking about Staker next week. However what’s Spanger’s job security like?

  2. As AyPluss said yesterday lunchtime in the Trade Talk thread, considering Geelong’s ladder position, large amount of games at Kardinia Park fortress, their prior history with resting star players etc… there’s no doubt that many of the jets will get nursed through the season to make sure they are fit and firing in September. IMO i see that as a boom for the kids and their JS as Scott will want to see which of them are part of his September plans and which are merely back up. In theory, this healthy competition should lead to the kids playing better and scoring better.

So while a Selwood type may be at risk of missing a game here or there, possibly Thurlow’s JS is increased by Geelong’s great start to the year.

Just thinking it through, seems plausable logic to me.

    Thoughts??

  5. In Shooter’s opinion, not only do you need value for your downgrades, but whoever you downgrade to needs a very high JS, as chances are you are planning to use them as permanent cover for the rest of the year. Every line needs a permanent bench player and that’s why when Shooter downgrades this week, Shooter will be picking up Jesse Lonergan. Yes, it costs an extra 50k on Kavanagh, but having a solid bench player as back up is worth the extra $$. Plus, it helps having 20 trades, 365k in the bank and a gold jacket worthy side.

  6. Collingwood’s Dale Thomas and Dayne Beams ruled out for a large chunk of the season

DALE Thomas will undergo ankle surgery today with him and fellow Collingwood star Dayne Beams set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Pies say a best-case scenario for Thomas would see him return for the final few rounds of the season.

  7. Have been carrying Pittard with the hope he will be back soonish. My thinking is he will get games again when he gets over this injury (BE12, Ave 76), but for how long before he is injured again? Goodes still has a bit to go (BE66, Ave 91). Would like to get Thurlow this week. Have Terlich and Vlastuin scoring well and making cash.
    TU Pittard to Thurlow
    TD Goodes to Thurlow

  8. Re: Thurlow, I think I’m going to take a punt that he can get a gig up until the bye and make me at least $100k. Rivers is listed as due back RD11 so you’d think they’d rest him until after the bye seeing as they have GC & GWS before it. Chappy could be a week or could be a month and he would also be a huge chance of resting against the minnows. There will also be a few others rested through these games like Bartel, Enright, Corey, Hawkins etc.

  10. I am thinking maybe I should bring in Webster and Thurlow for Stevenson and Hutchins. This gives me $300,000 on bench and I can get Jobe next week. They will both be on my bench.

TU: Webster and Thurlow for Stevenson and Hutchins
TD: Stevenson to Thurlow and M Jones to Watson.

  11. Any news on Crouch and Docherty?

Noticed that crouch played in the reserves.

But with the shitty DPP only working once per trade, I have to trade one of these boys for Thurlow.

My other option is Hutchins but I’m using him as coverage.

    Please help.

  15. Bought in Thurlow last week to save a donut. Will be sitting on the bench this week with Shaw and Gibbs back after a spell.
Still have Stevenson as D8 but want to move him on to generate some cash.
    Best option?
    T/U Staker
    T/D Webster
