Burning Question #1 – Rd3

Written by Schwarzwalder on April 5 2017

This Burning Question was posed to us by Twitch over Twitter……….Should we cut our losses with Jarryd Roughead this week?

Of course, all footy fans were rapt at the news of Roughy’s return to the field after his battle with melanoma.  They even gave him the captaincy at Hawthorn, a true inspiration!  During the Pre-Season, Supercoaches were confident that the big fella would average 90+ and provide a great F6 option for the entire year.

The Hawthorn unit is not what it once was, however.  The new-look midfield is still ironing out the wrinkles after the departures of Lewis & Mitchell, while supporters are still coming to terms with Ty Vickery being bought as a free agent 😉  But seriously, Roughy has come up with 73 & 82 over the first two weeks.  With Hoskin-Elliott as a valid cheaper option & The BurnMan Higgins tearing it up in the North midfield, some are getting impatient with Roughy at this early stage.  Is it worth trading him out though?  Help out Twitch with this Burning Question in the poll and comments below………..

Should Jarryd Roughead be considered as trade bait?

  1. Why trade Roughy, he will beat his b/e of 56 and he is up against Gold Coast who are a basket case. I would think most people have rookie issues to sort out rather than trade this bloke out.

    1. Had tossed that thought around, but here’s the problem i see.

I have most of the top 12 breakevens already. Something like 10 of 12.

The only thing I could gain is bringing Dahlhaus back to he forward line and getting Murphy in the mids.

Murph looks potentially a top 10 mid.

    2. you trade him as you recognise he is playing in a different side and past stats are irrelevant. You trade him if you have the analytical aptitude to recognise value trades that will increase your point scoring and salary cap!

Sorry about the big words Jock UFM……
      only joking, as you are.
Seriously the umpiring conspiracy needs to be addressed!!
Blaming the ground or crowd is BS. Get rid of these mincing pathetic excuses for human beings and find men that can do the job properly. NOTE to SELF ” They only do it now and then when instructed. They have proven they are capable of doing the job right. FFS, is it the bookies, the AFL, a private agenda?”
On camera they come across as beaten dogs. Have their families been threatened? Something smells real bad and is nothing new!!!!!!!!

    1. Maybe I’m biased, being a hawks man imo I think roughy and the hawks aren’t that bad, with Mitchell and o,meara racking up plenty of the ball, and all starting to get used to playing together, and roughy getting more match hardened/match fit, my thoughts are the hawks will get going and Roughead will lift over the next month or so,
And I for one won’t be trading him out anytime soon, he’s scoring 70-80 at the moment, which ain’t the end of the world , so I’m predicting (hopefully)
He will start to score around the 100 mark, and people who trade him out for WHE or some other player going well, may very well rue doing a trade.

      Trades are gold

  2. You’d be crazy to trade him if you got him. A mark and a kick extra in both their first games and he’d be just under a 90 average. They will win more and he will score more soon enough

  3. For me, sacrificing Roughy allows more expensive cash-cows in the side. The problem I see this year is that there seems to a high level of risk with cheap rookies, so how will you get the cash generation if you don’t spend the extra cash to get some of the more expensive rookies…Most have filled their MIDS so now focus needs to be on cash generation on FWD and DEF. If you’ve got your cash generation right then yes you’d be mad to trade.

    1. Quick question when Roughy was a premium forward ,was he filling in the Ruck ,I have a cash problem as well and don’t have WHE ,went in 3 midpricers with Nank, Steel and Roughy in forward line hopefully keeping 1 or 2 of them and upgrading to premiums later on while keeping the score ticking over ,so Roughy to WHE and depending how Steele goes might upgrade to Buddy ,any comments appreciated

  4. I only have 5k in the bank. Trading roughead allows me not only to bring in hoskin elliot but to upgrade injured backmen rookie smith (also have hibberd) to marchbank. Although i dont really want to get rid of roughead i feel it will benefit me by not having to field stewart in defence.

  5. Need to clarify a few things:
It was just as simple as trading roughy out, it’s the fact that I wanted to get WHE and that’s the only way I could get him using 1 trade apart from Taranto to WHE, would have also given me the cash to go smith to marchbank and maximising cash generation

    1. yeah well that change the deal doesn’t it
      makes it much more logical

I traded out Treloar who was so good for me last year BUT Buks is gone and Sydney will flog them this week when the Maggots have to Justify their stupidity last round and gave the the game to the Dogs. It’s not cheating its just home ground advantage??!?!!!!
AND Parish who is a failed POD in the resurgent Dons 4 Marchbank and Reid. From a projected loss to a projected gain of 127k if both hit their BE’s of -43 and -56
Trades are gold but ……………….. Risk = Reward
I have all the other good rookies
Its the only trade to improve my side prior to prices changing
Gawn was the only other projected loser and I have Pruess on the bench. If GOldy breaks down (I have a doll and needles on my desk) ( it has worked for me before!!!!) He will be fantastic early cash#$$$$$$

      1. Does that mean you are chasing overall glory this season, Eagle?

        Are you placed well?

I’m out of contention and focussing on my leagues so I’m saving trades but if you’re in contention then aggression makes sense.

          1. Is hard to believe. I was ranked 40,000 this time last year and then 6 weeks later I was in the top 600. If I hit trade on Robinson->Zerrett 20 seconds earlier (just missed lock out) in Rd2 I would have been top 300 and knocking on the door. Surely can’t be to far out this early?

  6. If I trade Roughead to Nank, is this too much of a sideways? I see the Nank as a potenial top 6 fwd however the same can’t be said for roughy, I don’t believe the supply is there for him anymore, sure he will score big now and again but maybe the best we can expect is an 85 average, whereas the Nank could potentially average 95. Thoughts community?

    1. Because Nankervis play Ruck, it is not exactly sideways. If you have someone at R3 that means you can use him as cover, that is something Roughy can’t do.

  7. Just traded out roughie to WHE and Smith to Marchbank. Dont want to get rid of the big rough dogg but i think its for the benefit of my team in the long run??!

    1. Just wondering if a player is playing in a different position in pre season games st Harry Taylor ,or especially rookies are not playing to the supercoach position eg Houston nominated as a forward but playing in defence ,why not change their positional status or give them dual status before season starts ,why wait till next season

  8. I dont understand… the general concensus at the begining of the season was roughie to ave 90 odd and keep him for F6-7 at season end. IMO fwd premos are lacking a 80-90 ave looks like a keeper. I dont think cash gen was why we picked hin in our sides.
