Burning Question – Rd15

Written by Schwarzwalder on June 29 2017

SmilingAssassin requested a thread for ‘popular MidPricers’ in our Polling Station on Monday and we’re only happy to oblige 😉

Heath Shaw started the season at $575k and was snapped up by many Coaches.  With only two tons from thirteen games & an avg of 86pts, those Coaches are starting to look at options elsewhere.  While his record over the past two years is solid, should we seek to move Shaw on?

Tom Lynch was earmarked by many as a potential Top6 FWD in 2017, especially given the difficulties of finding a consistent forward.  Lynch has scored five tons so far in 2017, but there are also results of 43, 29, 37 & 39.  Either he produces a 90+ game or he barely even shows up.  Should we cut our losses with Lynch?

So the Burning Question remains: Should Heath Shaw (GWS) & Tom Lynch (GCS) be treated as Fallen Premiums or just MidPricers to be upgraded?  Tell us your plans with these guys……..

Should we treat Heath Shaw (GWS) as a Fallen Premium or Mid-Pricer?

  1. Shaw- unfortunately no longer a premium defender and we have seen a big enough sample size to judge that GWS gameplan is only allowing him(and Williams) a mediocre score at this stage. Hold as a D6/D7 if you currently have him. Pass if you don’t.
Lynch- Young gun down on form and confidence, enter at own risk but capable of pushing out large scores once his confidence is back.Hold as F6/F7 if you currently have him , risky to trade in if you don’t have him , but as Barassi said the biggest risk in life is to……

  2. Unfortunately I have both (plus fyfe and nank) and only 6 trades once I bring in gawn for tom stewart so I am stuck with them for now.

  3. I’m running out of trades BUT right now I can replace Shaw with Lloyd and make 8k. Is it smart or just another symptom of a trade addict? Also is it a sure guarantee that Shaw will fire up?

    1. Just how many do you have left? Shaw to Lloyd is definitely a good upgrade, and an extra $8K, whilst not massive, could come in handy at some point. But if you’re down to your last handful of trades, it might be worth holding out in case of LTIs.

  4. In 2015, Shaw had 15 x 100+ scores and in 2016 he had 12 (all but 3 in the first half the year). He has had 2 this year and now has a 24 game average of 87 – that’s a whole seasons worth of data. If he averaged 87 for the entirety of 2016, no-one would have started him.

I traded Lynch in because of a “good fixture” and he put up scores of 103, 37 and 39. In the next month he has Western Bulldogs/Sydney and those were two I would have penciled in as sub par games. Don’t think I will be able to move him on so will just have to loophole with Greenwood @ F6 as of next week and hope he rides it out. With a BE of 158, if you plan on moving him on, it’s got to be this week before he potentially drops to $350k. You know he’s in bad form when my projected score goes up when I put Parsons on field in stead of him…

    1. Does it make me a bad person if I hope Parsons gets injured or dropped? Because I can’t afford to trade him out, but a forward line loophole option would be really handy, particularly with Lynch’s form being what it is.

      1. Based on the thumbs, I’m going to take that as a yes. Does it still make me a bad person if I just hope for him to be dropped?

  5. With shaw, would it be worth bringing in JJ to loophole with him or is that just carrying to duds instead of one?

    1. The only problem with loopholing Shaw and JJ is the possibility that you don’t accept a 75-85 score from one of them and the other drops a sub 60 score.

If selecting JJ saves 100,000 to 200,000 to allow you to bring a top echelon premium in mids or fwd (i.e Yeo/Heeney/Merrett/Selwood, etc) then go ahead with your plan.

      1. Yeah fair point. Ive got 6 premos in backline (including shaw) so I might just hold of on JJ and if I have trades up my sleeve upgrade shaw or a rookie to one off hibberd/rance/hurley/roberton

  6. Holding Shaw for another week or two but soon Lloyd will go back to DEF and Shaw will become Zerret or Selwood
