Bye Strategy 2012

Written by Motts on February 2 2012

Bye now (sorry, bad pun), you’re all probably painfully aware that over three rounds in the middle of the 2012 season, all 18 teams take a 1 week holiday, 6 teams at a time. Specifically, the bye rounds and teams are:

R11 – Adelaide, Brisbane, GWS, North Melbourne, West Coast, Western Bulldogs

R12 – Collingwood, Essendon, Fremantle, Geelong, Melbourne, Sydney

R13 – Carlton, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Richmond, St Kilda

Jester gave us a possible strategy a couple of weeks ago – pick a whole lot of players from teams who all have byes in one of those weeks and then take a dive in that round. Not bad if you’re going for a league win but what if you’re going for the whole box and dice?

Has anyone come up with an alternative strategy?

Here’s a quick poll:

  1. haven’t committed to anything so far, I was going to deal with it when the time comes but the thought of just sacrificing one round did cross my mind. Not sure the players I want would work out they way I want though. I have multiple teams on the go atm, too much going on for the next 2 weeks to give strategy too much thought. The team I have got currently set up is a “deal with it at the time” one but due to injuries, best made plans could STILL go out the window. Not to mention stupid suspensions.

  2. I believe it is near impossible to go the three rounds with out a donut. So the best scenario would be to limit the zero player scores to between 2 and 4 during rounds 11 to 13. The ruck numbers and lack of viable DPP Ruck combos will push the other postional bye totals to 3 or more per round. Round 12 is a must to have all your players on the field because four of the five weakest and highest scored against teams are playing – GWS, GCS, Port and Richmond. Collingwood and Geelong are the prominent teams in this round that have the bye. Round 13 would be the round to for go a couple of zero scores because GCS, Port, and Richmond have byes.

A 7/10/13 split at the first bye would enable you to trade
2 players for round 12 making 9/8/13 and
    3 players for round 13 say 9/11/10.

There are plenty of variables together with the decision to trade during bye weeks and it will be a fine balancing act but someone will get it right and minimise the debacle that will knock some teams over. Hope this inspires some genieses out there to come up with improved solutions.

  4. If by chance during round 11-13 you have all 30 players on the field playing (expect there bye round) you can get away with 1 donut in either round 12 or 13 with only using 6 trades.

However it is possible to go all 3 rounds without a donut however you need a ruck to forward dpp both players with different bye rounds but due to the lack of quality premium or rookie R/F on the list (No one to go with Rowe) its not going to happen

So the best anyone is going to do with a strong team is one donut

  5. Riddle me this Supercoach Man…..

    “structure for byes 7/8/15
2/2/5 def -only 2 will fit on bench
    2/2/4 mid –
    1/2/1-rucks
    2/2/5-fwd
three trades plus dpp trade rules will cover
plenty of time for cash cows to fatten
And avoid sun burn from last year(GWS 2012)
gives time and space for calamities esp with dpps
the 2 players from rnd 11/12 must be keepers and the 1 ruck per 11/12 as well
best of luck to all in 2012”

Not claiming this as my own handy work, a straight copy and paste job, but if you’ve got an hour or two to burn it can be done. I won’t spoil your fun but I will say that personally I’m not bothering.

  6. This is how you do it….. Don’t pick to many rookies with round 11 byes. Before round 12 trade “12 – bye” rookies for 11-bye guns. Before round 13 trade trade 13-bye rookies for 11/12-bye guns who have already had the bye. This strategy working alongside a couple of dpp links should avoid you a doughnut

  8. I did work out this morning from my starting team, of how to only get one donut- siposs- round 13. In total. It involves 9 trades. Not keen on it- my last 2 trades won me one or two GF’s last year when my opponent had run out of trades. Put those 9 I mentioned together with say 3 injury/susp/form team withdrawals and there goes half your trades for the year= BAM. No thanks.

  9. no matter what strategy we all come up with, their effectiveness will be dictated by injuries and luck. Personally I’m not too worried about the byes. At this stage, the only strategy I’ll be going with is no more than 4 players from each bye round in the def, mids and forws, and no more than 2 in the rucks. The rest I’ll work out as the season unfolds in the first 10 rounds.

  10. I reckon use the 3 trades each week and get your team set for the final run.
I have $800k to spend. Rather than death by 1000 cuts I’m gonna set my team over the next 3. And pray!
