Bye Structure

Written by Motts on May 8 2013

Roo Bloke has requested a poll on how people are approaching the bye rounds. We haven’t labelled it very well but you’ll notice up the top of this page we’ve got the 6 teams a week that will be resting during Rounds 11, 12 and 13.

So what’s been your approach to the byes this year?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

If you’ve been planning to minimise your amount of eggs during the byes congratulations! Perhaps you can share in Comments how you’ve gone about it.

  3. I’m no chance of winning the $50k, so will do what I need to do to try and win the league. So long as I have less doughnuts then the other bloke that’s a good thing.

  4. For those that haven’t looked into the bye structure what you’ll find is that alot of the popular picks are from Rnd 11 and Rnd 13 and that you may have very few from Rnd 12. With my current team i am copping doughnuts left and right in Rnd 11, have spare players in Rnd 12 and just enough running around in Rnd 13. Remember, the new rules are that the 18 highest scoring players regardless of position count towards your rounds score across the byes.

I guess there are a few ways to tackle it:
    1. take a beating in a particular round, most likely in Rnd 11 and score well in the other rounds
    2. moderate your outs across the byes so that you have 18 on the field in each of the bye rounds.

Someone going for overall glory would definitely be looking at option 2 and for those purely focussed on leagues should aim for option 1. But many of us place great pride in our overall position even if it is 4 (or 5) digits long. For those in this situation i think the bye rounds is where we can still be competitive in our leagues but also creep up the overall rankings.

Personally, all my trade targets are Rnd 12 and 13 with particular focus on trying to snare some elusive Rnd 12 players. There aren’t many fantasy relevant Rnd 12 players though!!

  5. I found last year that too much attention to the bye rounds early could lead to passing up the better players just because of their bye rounds. Due to this, I largely ignored them pre-season and have only been thinking about them as I trade in my upgrades during the season.

At the moment, I am looking at having 20 on the field in round 11 and 19 on the field in round 12, so I’m happy with the way that those two weeks are shaping up.

The problem with round 13 is that so many premiums from the backs and midfields fall into these weeks. In my current team I have H Shaw, Gibbs, Goddard, Heppell, Pendlebury, Swan, Ablett and Dangerfield all missing in round 13.

My forwards and rucks will be fine, but at the moment I will only have 3 defender and four midfielders available in round 13, meaning that I will have at least three doughnut in round 13. Due to this, I am strongly considering using two trades to sideways trade premiums in these weeks.

It may seem like a waste, but I actually jumped a decent amount in the bye rounds last year due to forward planning, so I could definitely see myself trading my lowest scoring defender and midfield premiums to avoid as many doughnuts as possible.

The other problem that has just occurred to me is who will I be putting the C on in round 13? No Ablett, Pendlebury, or Swan

  6. At the moment (before any trades this round) these are the keepers I’ll have out each round:

R11: 5 premiums (Martin, Franklin, Hartlett, Rockliff, Berger)
R12: 4 premiums (Cox, Shuey, Goldstein, Bartel)
R13: 6 premiums (Ablett, Swan, Pendles, Dangerfield, Goddard, Shaw)

Pretty evenly spread, especially as I plan to bring Priddis in R8 (R12 bye).
If I go according to plan by drafting Thomas this week that’ll be 7 premiums out R13, including rookies such as Crouch and Macaffer. Is that enough to stop me bringing in Daisy this week? Something to think about, but probably not.

  7. Pressed the “been planning since October” button but that’s probably a bit of an overstatement. I put a fair bit of thought into it in the preseason but once the hustle and bustle of the real stuff started and I had to salvage my team from the disastrous decisions made (Zmith, Rich, Karnezis, Steven and best of all Watts to Suban to Hutchins) and the bye strategy went out the window quicker than Dank related paperwork.

All is not lost though. At the moment I’ve got a 13/6/11 spread across the byes. Whilst that doesn’t look like a great start being one short at best for RD13 I have a lot of options to offload before the byes start.

    Here’s my rough plan:

    RD8
Heath/Stevenson/Pittard ➡ Docherty (possibly this round)
    Wines ➡ Priddis

    RD9
    Neade ➡ Osborne
    Heath/Stevenson/Pittard ➡ Staker

    RD10
    JJK ➡ NicNat
    Vlastuin ➡ Waters

    RD11
    Mayes ➡ Tom Mitchell
    O’Meara ➡ Ablett

As it said, that’s rough. I don’t particularly want or need to make two trades every week and it will obviously depend on selections and BEs. If it can all come together something like this though I will go into RD13 with a much more manageable 9/9/12 spread.

    Follow that up with:

    RD14
Crouch ➡ Colquhoun (regardless of whether he is playing he gives me both a link to the backline and a VC loophole option)
    Heath/Stevenson/Pittard ➡ Hanley

    RD15
    Macaffer ➡ Dick
    Kommer ➡ Selwood

So that’s a 10/9/11 split for RD14 and then a 10/11/9 split for RD15 and I’ve got 20 of 22 premium spots filled with some time to breath and Pendles and Birch to come in when the time is right.

Praise be to the SC Gods. AMEN.

  8. From this week I will be trying whereever possible to get as many Rnd 13 prem’s in on the basis of up-grading Rnd 11 rookies out (Wines to D.Thomas) so that the team has good to great coverage in rounds 11 & 12. Then keep double trades for Rounds 12 and 13 to ‘trade in’ Rnd 11 and 12 prem’s who have just had their bye whilst ‘trading out’ Rnd 13 rookies i.e. McAffer & Dwyer (if not gone already). My late charge last season came from doing really well from the byes onwards & i hope (read ‘need’) to do the same again this year! I have also been improving from the bottom up so that all except for Currie are playing & that all rookies can be relied on to fill gaps during the byes. Simple plan for a simple man!

  9. I havnt thought about the bye structure until now i planned on going with the flow and im not looking too bad R11, 12 but rd 13 will be the problem.
But im guessing most will have the same problem
Heres my premiums for each of my bye rounds
    R11-Birchall,Berger,Fyfe,westoff.Rockliff
    R12-Cox,Bartel
    R13-Goddard,Heppell,Danger,Pendles,Gaj,Jobe.Walker

  10. So if you have 18 players who play during a bye round all 18 of them score points, while if you have 22 active players you only get points for the best 18 of them?

Going to the effort of maximising your team for byes and making sure you have 22 players each week doesn’t net you the advantage of four extra players over an opponent who only manages 18, but instead your 4 lowest scorers just don’t count. Right?

So, the byes are pretty much irrelevant. I’m already looking at 19-19-20 on ground during the 3 bye weeks having done nothing to my team to prepare for byes, and instead of having to think “3 donuts, 3 donuts, 2 donuts, I should do something” I’m thinking “one spare player, one spare player, 2 spare players, I’m good”.

And here I thought extra trades were dumbing down SC. Now the bye rounds have been dumbed down. I guess all that’s left is dumbing down the scoring to give us a copy of DT. Then we can all go play DT, since DT live scoring is freely available while the mob behind SC go around threatening to sue everybody.

  11. Like most, my problem rounds are 11 and 13. The plan was always to use the port cashcows to upgrade to try and avoid this, and I will be down to 1 port player per location possibly this round. That, plus some trading in of dpps, primarily sorts out round 11.

Round 13 is one of the reasons I am considering not bringing daisy in this week.

I will already be short too many premos for round 13.

  12. To be honest I am just trying to deal with the latest week to week carnage.
The poor performance of late to the GREAT MAN Buddy
    The Hammy to Cyril
Whether Hartlett will score 140 points or 50 points
Who is going to get the general over the next 4 weeks.
Whether DC is right and the JJK trade to Stevie J is worth it
How the hell do I get Pendles in my team.
Why did I put Pav in my team at the start and not take the Roo instead.
How could I have possibly picked Westhoff in the start for my team.
Only saving Grace out of all that GAZ picked as number one.

Ohh sorry there is a bye round coming up in 5 Weeks.

  13. I think being smart with your salary cap is the most important thing.
Last year I worried too much about the bye rounds. This year trying to play it smart with the salary cap to get the best team possible as quickly as possible. Thus I am 248 overall. Trading in daisy thomas this week is a must and then jumping on priddis next week will be crucial.

  14. I have 10 down in each bye at the moment. Mainly DEFs in the first round, RUCs and FWD’s in the mid bye and MID’s in Rd 13.

I haven’t worried about the premium breakdowns just yet as there’s still some trading to do.

It’s all about just having 18 players running round each weekend. The fewest doughnuts wins the league games.

  15. RD 11: Rocky, Moloney, leuy, zorko, roughy, birch, neade, wines, stevenson, goodes
RD 12: bartel, currie, hannebery, JPK, cox, gawn, JJK, viney, terlich
RD 13: goddard, heppell, gibbs, shaw, pendles, murphy, o’meara, dwyer, crouch, macaffer, rowe

figuring might just be able to work my way into getting 18 onto the park each week. RD 13 is going to kill my backline much like last week with 4 of my 5 premos sitting it out. thinking that im going to bring in GOD for o’meara or wines in the coming weeks as im pretty sure that i cant win round 13

  16. I’m currently structured 11/9/10 over those three rounds..10/10/10 is the preferable option which allows 2 emergencies in each round .I have to rethink Currie now that he has a big band aid next to his name was hoping he would get a call up. Just traded in Vlustin and pocketed 115K with Stevenson but that brings me below Motts poll of 20 or more players !! I’m fairly evenly balanced ‘bye wise’ just need to keep an eye on it over the next few rounds

  17. What I have done is take a screenshot and pasted into Paint then applied dots on each player for a visual one page glance

    Red = Round 11
    Green = Round 12
    Yellow = Round 13

    Currently:

    3/2/3 in defence –
    4/0/6 in mids –
    1/2/1 in Rucks
    3/3/2 in Forwards

Round 11 looking bad in mids, but most of those are rookies. So can trade into 2 x Round 12 mids for a 2/2/6 – will lose 1 x DEF, 1 x FWD
    RESULT: 2 missing for a best 18 from 20/22

    Round 12
Will miss both Rucks, and 1 Fwd

    RESULT: 3 missing
    For a best 18 from 19/22

    Round 13
Being the last Round will prob use 3 trades to get mids from previous teams down to only 3 missing that bye. Currently 3 of the 6 are Prems, 3 are rookies which I will upgrade/downgrade. Will miss one in DEF as they are all Prems.

    RESULT: 4 missing (all Prems)
    For a best 18 from 18/22

  18. I’m taking the “pot luck” approach. I haven’t even looked at who has the bye when. As with every year, I try to have only two to three players from any team in my side at once (exception of bench players). Hopefully this is enough to field 18 each bye week. If not, ill make a heap of trades over these rounds, then run out of trades by about round 18 like last year, and then lose the grand final again after not being beaten all year.
