Best Laid Plans

Written by MJ on May 28 2013

Plenty of discussion going on about the byes that are now only one week away! Thought it would be good to get a broad view of how the community is going about it this year to complement Eagling’s post about bye trading yesterday.

Remember, ‘BYE ROUNDS – ‘Best 18’ Scoring – to better-reflect the actual competition, during the multi-bye Rounds 11, 12 and 13, you’ll score from your best 18 players only in any position, from your selected, on-field Starting 22. You’ll still need to ensure that your best available players are in your starting 22 line-up.’

This means it will not just take your best 18 scorers, regardless of position, rather it will take the best 18 scorers from the 22 you can put on the park. We will also have 3 trades per round in R11, R12 & R13.

There will no doubt be those, like myself, who have spent countless hours devising trading strategies to minimise the damage of the byes in each individual week. Then others who will take a dive in a given round, consciously loading up on premiums with a particular bye round on an easy league fixture. We’re taking Benjamin Franklin’s stance: “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

Then there will be those of you who know that unforeseen circumstances will arise, such as injuries and suspensions that will throw any best made plan out the window at any moment, taking Mike Tyson’s view: “Everybody has a plan, until they get punched in the face.”

How are you approaching the byes this year?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Got 9 out in round 11 (about to become 8 with Leun about to be traded). So should get through r11 okay. Then I’ll trade in players who have had their bye

  2. I mapped my lineups and opponents all out yesterday (burning my life away on SC heh) and was expecting to take a dive on R13… then I realise my opponent is more up the proverbial sh*t creek moreso that week than any other.

So now, who knows! Need to figure out my trade strategy. Hoping I can balance all 3 rounds in my favour now and then go very quiet trade wise until it’s finals time.

  3. For me it’s always about overall ranking. League wins are fun, but I like to rate myself against everyone, rather than just those that I can fit into five leagues!

I’ll have the following to select from:
    – 21 in Round 11;
    – 20 in Round 12; and
    – 18 in Round 13.
So injuries/suspension/selections pending I’m OK there.

In terms of premiums, I’ll be missing:
    – 4 in Round 11;
    – 6 in Round 12; and
    – 8 in Round 13.
Would ideally prefer having 1-2 of those Round 13 players in Round 11, but I’m happy enough with it.

Planning to bring in four Round 11 and Round 12 premiums after their byes (Birchall, JP Kennedy, Minson and Hanley), but it’s a little early to know if that will definitely be possible this far out.

C’mon cash cows, fatten up fast!

  4. Players missing:

    8/10/12

    Premiums Missing:

    6/6/6

I didn’t plan my bye structure. I just shot blindly and have ended up with this nice little figure.

Might cop a doughnut if there’s a flux of injuries/omissions/suspensions, but I reckon I’ll be competitive in every bye week.

  5. As it currently stands, ill have:

    9 out in round 11
    10 out in round 12
    11 out in round 13

Not too bad, and will betrying to minimise round 13 by trading in some previous bye premiums.

My question is….what the hell happens with the Draft leagues??

  6. Like Don, I’ve planned it so that I will have an adequate number of players to select from each week:

    R11: 20 players on-field (with 1 Ruck EMG)
    R12: 21 players on-field (with 2 Def EMGs)
    R13: 19 players on-field (with 1 Ruc EMG, 1 Fwd EMG)
So even if I get a few injuries, I should still be able to get 18 on the park.

    Premiums playing / Premiums missing:
    R11: 14 playing / 5 missing
    R12: 14 playing / 6 missing
    R13: 15 playing / 8 missing

Therefore, by R13 I should have 23 premiums in my team, trading in the likes of Gibbs, Walker, Hanley, Selwood, JPK & Birchall throughout the byes. Would leave me with 6 trades left to ride out the season and a team like this:

Goddard, Gibbs, Shaw, Hanley, Birchall, Hartlett
    Ellis, Goodes

GAJ, Pendles, Swan, Danger, JPK, Selwood, Priddis, Shuey
    Vlastuin, Hrovat

    Goldstein, Maric
    Gorringe, Daw

NicNat, Cox, Bartel, Rockliff, Martin, Franklin
    Walker, Staker

Obviously, a lot will depend on how much the rookies appreciate in price before I trade them out, injuries and suspensions, but its a platform which I can work from.

  7. Guys it does not quite stack up as you say.

I did the same and got similar numbers to DC, however the mix between what you have in BACKS MIDS RUCKS AND FWD need to be considered If one week you have lets say 10 mids available and only 4 backs the 2 Mids on the bench will not contribute to your team score and you will cope 2 donuts in your back line. So you need to minus these two players to players available then you get what numbers you will actually have each week to contribute to your scores.

    I started at 22 / 20 / 18

    Then when I did this it changed to 20 / 19 / 16

  8. I’ve got 10 out in Round 11, but still able to field a team of 18. No trades.

9 out in Round 12 – able to field 20. MAY trade out Hanneberry or Shuey and/or WC’s Kennedy, as this seems to be the time. Although Kennedy has been solid, I also have Cox and NicNat so ones gotta go.

11 out in Round 13 (including Danger, Pendles, Swan, Abz, O’Meara, Gibbs, Kommer, Goddard & Heppel) so might struggle to compete in this round. I’ll probbaly trade out Jaeger for Matty Boyd or someone who has had their bye. Kommer will be on the chopping block as well as Dwyer & Macaffer. Should be fun!

  9. Hey all. Would like your thoughts on something

    O’Meara – Vlastuin

Leuenberger – Nik Nat, leaving me with 17 trades

    Here’s my reasoning;
    1. Opens up my Def/Mid DPP AND my Fwd/Ruck DPP
    2. Frees (a bit of) cash to afford the Nik Nat trade (I was 4K short of the straight swap)
    3. Removes a donut from Rd 13, leaving me with 0 or 1 donuts, depending on availability.
    4. Allows the much needed strengthening of my depleted ruck stocks

Also thought about bringing in the Colq from PA instead of Vlas but Mottsy has tempted me in this direction.

TU – Do it. You won’t regret it

    TD – Think again/get a rookie instead

Post a comment for any other suggestions or if you like the Colq. Cheers heaps

  10. Last year guys I took the last by round as a dive.
Ended up losing all 3 somehow.
Just letting it ride this year.

  11. I am keeping Rockliff as I already have Franklin, Nic Nat, Stevie J, Bartel, JJK in the FWD. If he is out for more than 4 weeks (3 if you dont include byes) I will trade him to Watson, Dwyer DP.

For leunburger I’m holding tight and keep him on the pine till Mcevoy hits bottom low. I think he will make a great POD.

  12. Nightmare week for SCers. Leuy, Lonergan, Terlich, Ellis and now Rocky. Happen to have 3 of those. Looking at my trades:
Mayes – Bartel (Mayes going down in price, Cats soft draw)
Terlich – Staker (Depends on severity of Terlich’s injury, See BS Rookie review for Staker)

Holding Fire on Leuy, hopefully Gawn gets another match and doesnt spud up, looking for a score of 60ish.

Next week looking to downgrade evans to probably Hrovat and upgrade moloney to Hibberd via DPP Goodes.

After Rd 11, can upgrade Leuy to Minson, who just had his bye.

    Thoughts?

  13. i going to have to drop leuey. so while dropping him to staker, i can choose to use terlich to a prem in any position other than mids. shortlist is at minson and gibbs right now.
    what makes more sense?

T/U to go after the points for this week from minson who has been killer all season and playing a weak ruck stock at port, much more likely to score big than gibbs even though hes playing the giants. I then use dwyer to go after gibbs or any other prem back in the next few weeks.

T/D or i play for the long term navigating the byes and get gibbs this week and hope he goes massive against the giants and worry about minson after his bye.

im personally leaning towards the second option, so if you could leave a comment if youre voting the other way id appreciate that

  14. After the carnage of a few weeks back with the defensive injuries, Fyfe and Cotch out in the mids and Maric out I was thinking things had gotten back to normal. But no, Ellis was a late withdrawal and I’ve now got Terlich, ‘berger and Rockliff missing plus whoever else gets dumped at selection.
