Captaincy Candidates – Round 4

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 8 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

LLOYD v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 145, 122, 83 (117 av.)
  • L3 @ SCG: 124, 157, 111 (131 av.)

Yet to flex his seagull ceiling this year but got a good record v Dons and @ the SCG, should be solid for 120. Ridley also an option for those looking for a Thursday night VC.

BONTEMPELLI v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 138, 166, 99 (134 av.)
  • L3 @ MAR: N/A

Copped some defensive attention from Anderson but still managed to scrape to 80~ last week. Dogs love to play at down at Ballarat, pencil Bont in for 125 with the Dogs MIDs getting the drop on an ailing Lions midfield.

MACRAE v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 183, 155, 135 (158 av.)
  • L3 @ MAR: 189 (189 av.)

Same deal as Bont pretty much, but Macrae’s also got a tremendous record v the Lions in particular and has been the Dogs #1 CB attendee in the opening rounds. 130 at a minimum, with a chance to go large. Dunkley also viable if you don’t have Bont or Macrae.

Captaincy Candidates

GRUNDY v Giants

  • L3 v GWS: 135, 157, 139 (144 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 135, 70, 151 (119 av.)

Carves it up in Melbourne, starting to look real sharp and coming up against an inexperienced ruckman in Flynn surrounded by a GWS midfield on the decline. A lock for 135 this week.

GAWN v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 141, 116, 139 (132 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 93, 163, 141 (132 av.)

Cats running Blicavs, Stanley and Hawkins as rucks currently, who Gawn will lay waste to. Also out of the rigid  30% FWD role and having more of an impact across the ground. On that, and his great ceiling at the G, back him in for 140.

MITCHELL v Freo

  • L3 v Freo: 102, 150, 126 (126 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 132, 102, 164 (133 av.)

Copped O’Connor last week, but otherwise ticking along nicely. Blues starting to falter and leak points and Titch got a chance to hone his skills in the Perth hub last season. A lock for 125.

Steer Clear

SATAN v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 111, 141, 123 (125 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 122, 96, 111 (110 av.)

De Boer was straight to him last week and expect O’Connor, now the Cats’ designated tagger, to do the same. Sub-ton unfortunately incoming, steer clear.

Smoky Pick

LAIRD v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 93, 106, 117 (105 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 124, 138, 105 (122 av.)

Roos just absolutely bleeding SC points and letting 3-4 opposition MIDs get 30 toucheseach week. Perfect game for Laird to accumulate and sail to 125 provided he corrects his sloppy DE of late.

Verdict

Assuming Koschitzke is dropped and not the medical sub, I’ll be able to go Grundy into Gawn. If Kos holds or potentially the sub, it’ll be Macrae into Gawn. Either way, G&G have to be in your calculations this week.

  1. Anyone considering Tex for a sneaky captaincy option this week?
Could go large like Bruce did against the Roos

    1. If you don’t have any of the aforementioned VC options and have a late enough loop to get Tex into Gawn/Titch, then sure.

  2. Thanks GunBoat.

    Another “must read” every week.

With the revival of the tag, and some pretty sub par scores from our top mids. I’m sticking with the Rucks.

Grundy into Gawn again for me this week.

    Why change a winning formula.

I do feel Dunkley is due for a big one. If I only owned one of the big Dogs. I would throw the V/C on him.

Thanks again and good luck for this weekend!

    1. Cheers, FT.

Yeah, one of the Big Dogs goes large this week but just easier to bank on G&G if you’ve got the loop.

      1. I started Saunders.

        $102K M/F Hawk.

I was going A Fyfe, then Sharp was named and went him instead. DR has a great youtube vid on the best loop options. thats where I got the Saunders tip.

        1. Watched that video from DR as well and ended up going Saunders. Has paid off so far due to the later sunday games.

  3. Love this article every week.

Likely Macrae into Grundy and hoping if Macrae goes big I can find myself a loop.

  4. Thoughts on Dusty as a smoky Friday night VC? Loves a big game and Port are unlikely to tag or lock down too effectively.

    1. The “big game” factor is appealing, but just doesn’t have as good a record v his opponent and @ this week’s venue as some of the other options. No problem with him as a cheeky VC if you’ve then got a safe C to fall back on.

      Here are his stats:

      MARTIN v Port

      L3 v Port: 74, 104, 121 (100 av.)
      L3 @ AO: 116, 74, 108 (99 av.)

      1. Cheers for the stats, they don’t look overly appealing! I’m still tempted though, either a Dusty VC into Macrae / Gawn C, or the simple Macrae into Gawn.

        1. Look, Macrae into Gawn the statistically sound, safe and probably best option – but if you’re getting a feeling for Dusty, go for it.

Utility of the VC is that you can get a little spicy with it.

          Good luck!

  5. Hey GD, was wondering why there’s no Goldy on this list? Up against ROB this week whos struggled for form recently. Goldy has also been in great form like usual and I’m assuming he pummels the apprentice this week and posts a 180+ score. Surely he’s a better option than someone like Gawn who just isn’t of the same ilk.

  6. Don’t know what you’ve seen in Goldy’s form to give him the vc or c but he’s averaging 95. Love the bloke and he’ll hopefully have a good game on Sunday but GD deals with the numbers and less on hunches.

    1. Eh, got good stats v Swans and @ SCG but still not mad on Zerrett this week.

Playing without an actual ruck, might get a look from Hewett and traditionally scores best against weaker sides (Swans looking deadly so far).

      Here are his stats anyway:

      MERRETT v Swans

      L3 v Swans: 159, 59, 129 (116 av.)
      L3 @ SCG: 159, 129, 141 (143 av.)

  8. Had Lloyd as VC, but 100 doesn’t do it for me.

Thinking of a dark horse in Brayshaw for C. Has performed well against Hawthorn in the past.

  9. TU: Bont into Gawn
    TD: Dunkley into Gawn

Was thinking Bont but does the predicted bad weather in Ballarat suit Dunkley better?

  10. Mummy as Grundy’s opponent has me nervous.

Should I switch to Steele or Dunkley.

    T/U Stick with Grundy.

    T/D Change it up.

    See below..

    1. Grundy will still obliterate Mumford. +20 points in free kicks to Grundy will also be handy.

      1. Thanks GunBoat.

        I left it with Grundy.

Steele is putting his hand up for future duties with 71 at the Half.

  11. Both of my head to heads have captained Grundy, as have I.

With Flynn and some of my defenders dropped, should I play it safe and keep Grundy, knowing that it will be a good score and I’ll likely just scrape a lose.

Or do I go for broke and captain Howe as a strong D against a weak GWS?
He will probably get less points than Grundy… But what if he doesn’t…

    TU: keep Grundy
    TD: risk it with Howe
