Captaincy Candidates – Round 5

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 2 2020

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

GRUNDY v Essendon

  • L3 v Dons: 157, 134, 113 (135 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 103, 115, 157 (125 av.)

Looked a touch underdone last week, but still pumped out a handy 135. Always a reliable VC, safe for 130.

LLOYD v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 136, 119, 122 (126 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 74, 96, 22* (64 av.)

Chucked an asterisk on his L3 @ MS because he hasn’t played there since 2016. More recently, the Swans seem to always get the better of us [Eagles]. Expecting a 120 as we aimlessly feed the Swans backline and let Lloyd seagull it up.

BONTEMPELLI v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 118, 87, 134 (113 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 76, 94, 97 (89 av.)

As predicted in last week’s captaincy article (pats back), Bont snapped back into form against the Swans. Roos backing in their own midfield instead of tagging this season, thus owners can back Bont in for 130.

Captaincy Candidates

NEALE v Port

  • L3 v Port: 177, 118, 99 (131 av.)
  • L3 @ Gabba: 147, 166, 171 (161 av.)

Perhaps the only reason I’m still holding a respectable rank amidst all this carnage is Neale. Feels insane to say, but I don’t see anything short of 140 from him this week.

GAWN v Tigers

Big Maxxy was underwhelming last week. Luckily “underwhelming” for Gawn was a casual 142, instead of the double ton we were all expecting against Pittonet. Great record against Nank, a sure bet for 130.

  • L3 v Tigers: 134, 145, 151 (143 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 141, 119, 99 (120 av.)

KELLY v Hawks

Finally found form last week with Coniglio relegated to stints in the FWD line. Giants coming off an important win, expecting Kelly to click back into gear – starting with a 125 this week.

  • L3 v Hawks: 154, 99, 134 (129 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 120, 89, 102 (104 av.)

Steer Clear

MITCHELL v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 181, 130, 108 (140 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 181, 98, 93 (124 av.)

After a big 145 last week, Titch is set to plummet back down to earth as De Boer ruins all the fun. Sub-ton incoming.

Smoky Pick

WALTERS v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 71, 64, 49 (61 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 113, 109, 50 (91 av.)

With Fyfe out, the Dockers will almost certainly increase Walters already solid midfield role and, add to that, they’re playing the Crows. Potential for a pseudo-Fyfe 130 is there.

Verdict

Gotta be Neale into Gawn for me this week (again). Don’t want to VC any of the earlier candidates in case they put up an awkward 130~ when I know one, if not both, of Neale/Gawn will pop off.

      1. Port may well go after Neale as they did last year so maybe not the Best VC or captain option for me, They been quite vocal about going after him especially as he has been the decisive factor for their wins this year.
        Just an FYI 🙂

        1. Fair point, although I don’t think Port will upend their current winning system to bring in a tagger.

VC him into Gawn if you’re worried about the tag, but you can’t look past him in form at the Gabba for me.

          1. Lasy year,Neale got 177 the first game against Port – once Port decided to go after him the next game – he still managed 118!

  1. Very much appreciate the write up GD.

What are your thoughts on throwing the VC on Doc?

    1. Cheers, Barb – means a lot.

Yeah, I was going to make Doc my Smoky Pick but there wasn’t enough data.

But, sure, give him a look. If he goes huge you can take his score, if not you can always C Gawn or Neale; also lets you avoid awkward 130~’s from earlier candidates.

  2. Re Neale as v. The great FD article about long term averages still applies. Neale just gotta come back at some stage…when is the tricky thing. In any event, its always only the difference between two scores that matters. So Grawn it is.

    1. No doubt, Wighty. But while Neale’s hot and at home, he’s worth a look for the VC at least.

  3. Tom Mitchell L3 v Giants: 181, 130, 108 (140 av.)

How do you predict a sub-ton from these numbers? deBoer was playing in some of those games.

    1. I doubt De Boer goes to Omeara Sunday.

De Boer wasn’t playing on Titch in those monster scores IIRC.

Mitchell was vital against Roos, I can see De Boer going to Mitchell.

    2. Oh come on, bAps. Bit of Hawks bias there, my friend.

You really want to consider a VC/C against the Giants? Is De Boer just going to ignore a Brownlow winning midfielder? Why run the risk?

      1. Abs has just said GD that he thinks De-Boer will go to Mitchell so I doubt he is suggesting to put the C on him.

You are doing great work for the site GD, but have to be more careful reading comments before jumping the gun and everyone might have a differing opinion on VC/C options.

        1. GD I think Abs is just querying your comment of a sub ton by Mitchell rather than he is a C option.

Anyway one of you will be right and one will be wrong which is the great game of SuperCoach.

          1. Sorry Baps thought you were the same person as Abs making those 2 comments so my fault as I did not read the names properly.

So sorry GD I should not have doubted you as you know the sites forum members better than me as I am not on the site as regular as I used to be.

I do promote your Captains article on twitter GD so keep up the good work.

    1. Not in his current form, Bomber, no. Been watching the Blues’ games lately and he isn’t in the dominant form that he was in for parts of last year. Plus, Steele ran with Martin for the first quarter last week; probably gives Cripps some attention.

That all said, if you’re feeling Cripps you can always chuck the a sneaky VC on him and no harm done if he doesn’t fire – although, I think it can be better used elsewhere.

  4. Great write up GD. Agree with it all. I am going Neale into Gawn. Port may tag Neale, but he is still the inform player in the competition by a mile. Same risk as picking anyone else really.

    1. Cheers, Jeannot.

Hope I can help you in some small part to hold your impressive rank this week!

      Good luck.

  5. Now that Jacobs is sidelined DeBoer is the only player capable of a hard tag. Who could Port put on him? Plus it sometimes helps his scores to get tagged (like against Crows) as all his touches become hard ball gets and score accordingly.

  6. Any love for Goldy ?
Playing like a man possessed & no fear of the dreaded tag . lol

    1. Hey, Syringe.

Yeah, Goldy is an EXCELLENT pick this week if you’ve got him. Only 5% ownership, so I didn’t give him a mention. Should go off v English.

      1. No sweat GD & yeah, I do have him.
Had a minor conniption when I saw he never got a mention , scrambled to double check he was still playing. ! Happy to say the ol’Ticker is still working tho, so no worries buddy .
        cheers !

  7. Team 1 vc Adams atm c Goldy
Team 2 vc Grundy atm c Neale
140 is the aim, so watch ‘em both get 125-135 (“sigh” the torment of it all)
*it is late, I must be dreaming/nightmaring.
