Captain’s Table – Round 13

Written by Hot Sauce on June 13 2019

The return of Patrick Dangerfield is soured by the Cats having the bye this week, as to is Max Gawn’s Dees, who both fired in round 12. Luckily for us coaches the beast that is Patrick Cripps is still available after his monster 194, along with a few more options. Let’s take a look.

Adelaide v Richmond

(Thursday – 7:20pm @ AO)

The Crows are firing, and the Tigers are licking their wounds after the belting they received from the Cats. The likes of Dustin MartinTom Lynch and Bachar Houli to fire but will unlikely be enough to topple the Crows. Led by Rory SloaneMatt & Brad Crouch in the middle, Crows should dominate the middle of the ground leading to one of the above three leading the scoring, and my bet is Sloane. Has averaged 113.6 over his last 5 games against the Tigers, with 141 and 140 in his last two games against them at the Adelaide Oval. Solid VC option.

Best choice: Rory Sloane

Essendon v Hawthorn

(Friday 7:50pm @ Marvel)

In what should be a hard-fought battle, both teams would be looking to hang onto their hopes of September footy. The Dons could potentially welcome back key players in Dylan ShielJake Stringer Orazio Fantasia while the Hawks will be without Ben McEvoy and Chad Wingard for what should be a tight game. While Ricky Henderson and James Sicily are more than capable of a big score, it may be more likely to come from the Bombers engine room with Zach Merrett required to be at his best to help the Dons over the line. Hasn’t been in the greatest form of late but backing him to bounce back.

Best choice: Zach Merrett

Gold Coast v St. Kilda

(Saturday 1:45pm @ Riverway – Townsville)

The Saints continue to fly as far as possible for their games with Townsville hosting this match after they faced the Power in China a fortnight ago. Coaches should be staying away from this game for any potential captaincy options.

Best choice: N/A

Fremantle v Port Adelaide

(Saturday 2:35pm @ Optus)

This should be a tight battle with both teams looking to consolidate a spot in the top 8 and give their finals hopes a boost. The Power will be led by the evergreenTravis Boak, who despite dropping off from his white-hot start to the season, reminded us all of his scoring power against the Saints in China. For the DockersMichael WaltersLuke Ryan and David Mundy have been huge in their wins, but all three are likely to be outscored by champion Nat Fyfe. Fyfe is in great form averaging 125.8 over his last 5 games, while having a healthy form-line against the Power in recent history with an average of 120.8 over his last 5 which includes scores of 156 and 141.

Best choice: Nat Fyfe

Carlton v Western Bulldogs

(Saturday 7:25pm @ Marvel)

The Blues comeback victory against the Lions last week, plus the fact they smashed the Dogs in round 5 this season, make this game an interesting contest. Plenty of firepower in this game with Marcus BontempelliJack Macrae and Josh Dunkley all having excellent seasons, albeit lacking some consistency in their weekly performances. However, after his performance last week, it will be hard to go past Patrick Cripps in this game as either VC or C.

Best choice: Patrick Cripps

North Melbourne v GWS

(Sunday 3:20pm @ Blundstone)

A resurgent Kangas outfit since Rhyce Shaw has taken over face up against one of the best teams in the comp looking to get back on track after their loss to the Crows last week. Likely to be a battle between Ben Cunnington, who is surprising many coaches with his outstanding 2019 season, against the might of Josh Kelly, Stephen Coniglio, Tim Taranto and co. With too much firepower and too much at stake, it’s likely that Kelly fires his team to solid win while scoring a very worthy captains worthy score.

Best choice: Josh Kelly

Hot Sauce’s Top Picks

  1. Patrick Cripps
  2. Josh Kelly
  3. Nat Fyfe

  1. VC: Fyfe
    C: Kelly/Cripps

Q: is going Cripps subconsciously chasing last week’s score?
Conversely, is Kelly due a big one?!

    TU: Kelly
    TD: Cripps

    Thanks coaches

    1. Hi Allsaints,

I expect Kelly to go large but I suspect it may be irrelevant as quite probably we will take Fyfe’s score.
Given that WB’s lost convincingly to Carlton earlier this season I expect them to put a lot of work into diminishing Cripp’s influence on the game.
Just like back in the 90’s when it was said ‘No Carey no North” I think the same can be said ‘No Cripps no Carlton’
