Captain’s Table – Round 16

Written by Hot Sauce on July 5 2019

Hawthorn v Collingwood

(Friday – 7:50pm @ MCG)

You would expect Collingwood to bounce back strong this week and will be led by stars like Brodie Grundy and Adam Treloar who should overshadow the best that the Hawks can offer. Grundy has been stellar throughout the season but despite his poor recent form against the Hawks (averaging 97.3 in his last 3) he is extremely hard to pass up for a Friday night VC. Treloar has also been in good touch lately plus has a much better recent history against the Hawks, but Grundy should still be with our choice here.

Best choice: Brodie Grundy

Essendon v Sydney

(Saturday 1:45pm @ MCG)

Suddenly, this clash has some real significance for the finals picture with an Essendon side screaming for consistency and a Sydney side who has found some form. The Swans have plenty of choices with inform Dane Rampe joining Josh KennedyJake Lloyd and Luke Parker as potential high scorers, with Parker hard to look past. Zach Merrett is another with great potential in this game, with a solid season and good recent history.

Best choice: Luke Parker

Gold Coast v Richmond

(Saturday 2:10pm @ Metricon)

Not much to see here in terms of captaincy potential. Best to just move on.

Best choice: None

Adelaide v Port Adelaide

(Saturday 4:05pm @ AO)

Plenty of potential across the park in what should be a fiery and close showdown in Adelaide. RuckmenScott Lycett and Reilly O’Brien are in excellent form while midfielders Travis BoakRory SloaneMatt CrouchBrad Crouch and also Tom Rockliff are capable of going large. There is almost too many options here in this game to safely choose one, but Rocky went off in the reserves, the ruckmen are absolutely flying but I’ll banking on Sloane to top the list.

Best choice: Rory Sloane

Western Bulldogs v Geelong

(Saturday 7:25pm @ Marvel)

Just like the showdown, there is so many choices here with the Dogs hosting the Cats at Marvel. There is midfield firepower everywhere in this game withTim KellyMitch Duncan and Patrick Dangerfield to battle against Josh DunkleyJack Macrae and Marcus Bontempelli sure to produce a solid captaincy option. Despite all of that talent above, it’s the classic choices of Danger and Macrae that will hard to split. Both are in excellent form. Take your pick.

Best choice: Jack Macrae

Fremantle v West Coast

(Saturday 6:10pm @ Optus)

A spiteful derby is on the cards here with the Dockers looking to edge closer to a return to the finals. Nat FyfeMichael WaltersShannon Hurn and Elliot Yeo should all have strong games. It will be fun to watch Fyfe and Yeo go head-to-head and Hurn will likely rack up a ton of touches down back. Fyfe is in great form and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Best choice: Nat Fyfe

Carlton v Melbourne

(Sunday 1:10pm @ MCG)

With Patrick Cripps still out injured and an injury cloud hanging over Dees star Max Gawn, the options are very slim. Clayton Oliver should lead the Dees in the middle, and with Cripps missing, should dominate the contested possessions. He certainly hasn’t lived up to his potential this season, but could really go off in this game.

Best choice: Clayton Oliver

North Melbourne v St. Kilda

(Sunday 3:20pm @ Blundstone)

It will be hard to fight the urge to picking a captain from the late Sunday game, but it would be wise to consider the two potential captains from this game. Young sensation Rowan Marshall has been phenomenal this season, especially of late but will come up against a resurgent Todd Goldstein who could subdue the youngsters influence. Ben Cunnington however should dominate the middle and should be an excellent POD choice this week.

Best choice: Ben Cunnington

GWS v Brisbane

(Sunday 4:40pm @ GIA)

Dayne Zorko has come to life in the last few weeks and could continue his strong run of form with teammate Lachie Neale. Neale has been in poor form over the last month but will be keen to improve leading into a potential finals campaign. The Giants will look to bounce back from an agonising defeat to the Dons last week. Lachie Whitfield’s return will further boost a strong midfield which will be led by superstar Josh Kelly. He’s in amazing form averaging 125.0 in the last 5 games.

Best choice: Josh Kelly

Hot Sauce’s Top Picks

  1. Brodie Grundy
  2. Jack Macrae
  3. Nat Fyfe
  4. Josh Kelly
  5. Ben Cunnington

Wildcard: Tom Rockliff

    1. God we think alike don’t we GD…

Sloane averages 155 against Port and is a big game player. I’m quietly expecting 176. Kelly never goes below 100 so he is a safe C is Sloane fails. Grundy I feel will be stuck in between 115-125 range which is annoying for a VC.

      1. Yep, TR. Great minds, baby!

Sloane to step up for The Showndown, Grundy to post an awkward score and J. Kelly is hella reliable. Although, I am considering putting the C on Neale if Sloane fails. No Boer, think the Lions take it up the Giants, could score well?

        1. Coming off a loss, I reckon the Giants will put away the Lions early. J Kelly 153. Neale tends to go quiet when Brissie struggle.

          1. Let’s just hope that VC Sloane can go huge and we don’t have to worry about a C.

  1. Grundy tonight will hopefully be enough but seriously considering Lycett against ROB tomorrow as the C.

      1. I own both so I’m actually hoping they both play well and that neither loses their first ruck spot. The shadows of Sauce and Ryder fear me with finals approaching.
