Captain’s Table – Round 18

Written by Hot Sauce on July 19 2019

Take a bow Josh Dunkley! He was far and away the standout performer cracking the double century and reaffirming himself as a weekly captaincy option. Let’s take a look at who else is a viable option this week.

Adelaide v Essendon

(Friday – 7:20pm @ AO)

An important game for the overall finals picture with a few decent captaincy choices here. Reilly O’Brien could have a huge game with no recognised ruckman playing for the Bombers as their injury woes continue.Zach Merrett is the most likely for the Dons, but the Crows hold the upper hand in the middle with the Crouch brothers and Rory Sloane set for a big night. Sloane could cop the Clarke tag, and if he does, my tip is Matt Crouch to top score dominating the inside ball.

Best choice: Matt Crouch

Richmond v Port Adelaide

(Saturday 1:45pm @ MCG)

The Tigers are flying and now face the inconsistent Power side desperate to get their finals campaign back on track. I can’t see the Tigers losing this as they are flying at the moment, but it’s Travis Boak who sets to be the top scorer in his effort to lift the Power to a win. The Tigers are hard to tip regarding scoring power, making Boak the most likely choice now.

Best choice: Travis Boak

Carlton v Gold Coast

(Saturday 2:10pm @ Marvel)

Look no further than Patrick Cripps as your preferred VC choice this week. Cripps loves playing the Blues averaging 152.3 over his last three games and having a stellar season. A highly likely win for the Blues at Marvel, which Cripps is averaging 152 from the two occurrences. Just lock him in.

Best choice: Patrick Cripps

GWS v Collingwood

(Saturday 4:35pm @ GIA)

Plenty of talent on the park in this game, and a fair bit missing through injury as well. The likes of Adam TreloarTim Taranto & Scott Pendlebury could push for the top score in this game, but it’s likely to be a contest between Lachie Whitfield and Brodie Grundy. Whitfield is having a great season but it’s hard to go past Grundy. Pretty much a lock for either VC or C every week and this week should be no different.

Best choice: Brodie Grundy

Brisbane v North Melbourne

(Saturday 7:25pm @ Gabba)

The Kangas heartbreaking loss last round pretty much shuts the door on their push for the finals, while the Lions are flying right now and looking to lock in a top 4 spot. Ben Cunnington and Dayne Zorko are outside choices, but you just can’t look past superstarLachie Neale. At the Gabba he will be an excellent captains choice.

Best choice: Lachie Neale

Fremantle v Sydney

(Saturday 6:10pm @ OS)

The Dockers are struggling and are now missing their superstar Nat Fyfe as they tackle the Swans at home. The Swans will look to bounce back after their shock loss against the Blues and have plenty of high scoring options. Josh KennedyJake LloydIsaac Heeney and Luke Parker are evenly matched but it’s Lloyd who has the record and my bet as the top scorer.

Best choice: Jake Lloyd

Geelong v Hawthorn

(Sunday 1:10pm @ MCG)

The Hawks don’t look to stand a chance against their archrivals and despite Ricky Henderson and James Sicily’s potential to score large, the best option is sure to be a Cat. Mitch Duncan and Tim Kelly could lead the way, but you’d be foolish to go against Patrick Dangerfield. He averages 134.7 against the Hawks, 138.7 over their last three contests and is averaging 136.4 over the last five weeks. Say no more.

Best choice: Patrick Dangerfield

Melbourne v West Coast

(Sunday 2:50pm @ TP)

The Eagles are likely to get back on the winners list and will be led by their stars Shannon HurnElliot YeoLuke Shuey and Andrew Gaff. They are all having a great season as is Clayton Oliver and Max Gawn, with the latter being the safe bet in this game. Got a feeling Yeo is ready to have a huge game, but with Nic Naitanui out, Gawn should be locked in.

Best choice: Max Gawn

St. Kilda v Western Bulldogs

(Sunday 4:40pm @ Marvel)

The perfect game for coaches who need to go against the grain to try and sneak a league win as there is plenty of worthy options here. Jack Macrae is a regular Captaincy option, but it could be Marcus BontempelliJosh DunkleyRowan MarshallLachie Hunter or Jack Billings that could be an excellent choice. Marshall and Dunkley are in exceptional form and alongside Macrae, provide coaches with excellent late week options.

Best choice: Josh Dunkley

Hot Sauce’s Top Picks

  1. Patrick Cripps
  2. Brodie Grundy
  3. Max Gawn
  4. Lachie Neale
  5. Patrick Dangerfield

Wildcard: Rowan Marshall

Good luck coaches!

  1. Will there be enough time in-between Carlton (2.10) and Collingwood (4.35) to go Cripps VC into Grundy C?

    1. as long as your on the ball zac it’s plenty of time the match should be nearly over so you should know whether cripps is on track for a decent VC score.
