Captain’s Table – Round 20

Written by Hot Sauce on August 2 2019

Let’s take a look at who are the most viable options this week.

North Melbourne v Hawthorn

(Friday – 7:50pm @ Marvel)

A terribly tough game to select a winner is almost as tough to select a VC. Most coaches would be wise to skip over this game with the regular choices playing later in the round, but if you need to put your money on someone it would be Kangas veteran Todd Goldstein who is in a rich vein of form. Averaging over 130 over his last 5 games and despite his recent form against the Hawks I’d back him in over James Sicily.

Best choice: Todd Goldstein

Essendon v Port Adelaide

(Saturday 1:45pm @ Marvel)

This will be Port’s last chance at making the finals up against another Finals contender who are looking for their 6th straight win. Port have a few potential huge scorers in Robbie Gray and in particular Travis Boak but it’s Zach Merrett who is most likely to top the scorers. His recent form has been patchy but he averages 110+ against Port over his last 4 games and loves playing at Marvel – especially in wins which the Dons will be hoping this will be.

Best choice: Zach Merrett

GWS v Sydney

(Saturday 2:10pm @ GIA)

Plenty of options in this game but none are screaming out to be picked. Flip of a coin between Jake LloydLachie WhitfieldLuke ParkerJosh KennedyTim TarantoZac WilliamsIsaac HeeneyJeremy Cameron and Toby Greene. 9 players that are hard to seperate is a rare thing, but I’m honestly struggling to do so. Something is telling me Kennedy but Lloyd or Whitfield is the safer bet.

Best choice: Lachie Whitfield

Fremantle v Geelong

(Saturday 2:35pm @ OS)

Another game with a few strong choices with Nat Fyfe due for a big game and loves playing the Cats and loves playing at home. He has been battling an injury recently and been slightly under-performing (for his lofty standards) and for that reason I’m going against him this week. Joel Selwood and Tom Hawkins exploded last week against the Swans but I’ll be rolling with Patrick Dangerfield who is good form and loves playing the Dockers – averaging 137.1 against them since 2012. Tim Kelly and Mitch Duncan are excellent POD selections too.

Best choice: Patrick Dangerfield

Melbourne v Richmond

(Saturday 7:25pm @ MCG)

The Tigers just don’t provide any captaincy options which leaves a battle between Max Gawn and Clayton Oliver. Gawn would be an easy choice, especially against the Tigers rucks but with an injury cloud hovering over him and the inclusion of Braydon Preuss makes it a lot closer battle. The fact he is still playing makes it hard to choose another over him, he loves playing the Tigers.

Best choice: Max Gawn

Adelaide v St. Kilda

(Saturday 7:10pm @ AO)

Another difficult game to decide on with midfielders Rory SloaneBrad CrouchMatt CrouchJack BillingsSeb RossJack Steele while the key match-up of Rowan Marshall versus Reilly O’Brien provide the most tempting options. They are hard to split but the consistent form of Marshall gets the nod, O’Brien has the occasional huge score at home but is also susceptible to a below par game.

Best choice: Rowan Marshall

Collingwood v Gold Coast

(Sunday 1:10pm @ MCG)

The perfect opportunity for the Pies to get their season back on track playing the lowly Suns at the G. Brodie Grundy should be a lock as your captain or vice-captain this week. No questions asked, just lock him in.

Best choice: Brodie Grundy

Carlton v West Coast

(Sunday 3:20pm @ Marvel)

Patrick Cripps is one of excellent Sunday picks as Captain coming off an impressive 152 last week. He is averaging 120+ at Marvel Stadium and enjoys an excellent recent record against the Eagles, more than enough reasons to lock him in. The Eagles have some decent options but none are worth picking over the Blues skipper.

Best choice: Patrick Cripps

Brisbane v Western Bulldogs

(Sunday 4:40pm @ Gabba)

The final game of the round offers up some excellent options for a late round captain, especially for those who find themselves trailing leading into the last few games of the round. The Dogs, led by Jack MacraeJosh Dunkley and Marcus Bontempelli, will be a tough beat for the Lions and could all post huge scores, but I would think Lachie Neale is overdue for a big game – and he could go really huge!

Best choice: Lachie Neale

Hot Sauce’s Top Picks

  1. Brodie Grundy
  2. Patrick Dangerfield
  3. Patrick Cripps
  4. Lachie Neale
  5. Jack Macrae

Wildcard: Adam Treloar

Good luck coaches!

    1. who knows? Been kept very quiet if true. Preuss back into the team makes you wonder. unless hes back in the team just to try and expose Tigers lack of Ruckmen. We will have to wait and see.

      1. At the same time, T-Mac, Smith and Wied are out. Petty hasn’t played much at all yet alone forward. We have no recognised Full Forward. Feel like they will both play. I really hope so.

    1. Same combo bar Neale.

Both Gawn and Macrae are averaging 150+ in their past 3 matches against their upcoming opponent with all 135+.

Since their 1st premium season (Mid=100, Ruck=95) they have both recorded a 120+ on every occasion over 100 (Gawn 3/3 and J Macrae 6/6).

      1. Just get the feeling that Neale is due for a big one. But yeah, will likely stick with Macrae if Gawn fails.

      2. Same here.

I don’t think Grundy is quite the lock that people are assuming this week – Gold Coast may be an easy opponent, but Jarrod Witts isn’t.
