Captain’s Table – Round 4

Written by Hot Sauce on April 11 2019

Popular Round 3 choices Patrick DangerfieldMax Gawn and Brodie Grundy justified their selections last round, but were surpassed by the likes of Lachie WhitfieldPatrick Cripps and of course Lachie Neale– who all scored over 150 points. Round 4 offers up plenty of options across the week, so let’s take a closer look.

Sydney v Melbourne

(Thursday – 7:20pm @ SCG)

The weeks media attention has been firmly placed on the listless Demons after their third consecutive loss while the Swans managed to finally put the plucky Blues away for their first win. It makes for an opportunity for one side to stay in touch with a finals spot while the other will look forward to another week under the spotlight.

Jake Lloyd continues to dominate for the swans and offers 69k coaches a genuine VC option on Thursday night. Other Swans likely to score well enough to warrant the selection is veteran Josh P Kennedy and young star Isaac Heeney.

Someone at the Dees needs to stand up and drag this team over the line and the choices will come from the middle in star players Angus BrayshawClayton Oliver and Max Gawn. The midfield have been under the pump and come up against a strong group, but there is nobody at the Swans able to keep down big Maxy if he gets going. He is the Dees best chance.

Best choice: Jake Lloyd

Collingwood v Western Bulldogs

(Friday 7:50pm @ MCG)

Despite the Pies best efforts in three tough games they find themselves 1-2 while the Dogs were left shocked with the first defeat at the hands of the Gold Coast Suns. The Pies have a great spread of players capable of scoring big with the likes of Steele SidebottomAdam Treloar and Brodie Grundy. The AA ruckmen has found some form and could feast on the undersized Dogs as he did last year with a huge 152.

The Dogs have their own excellent options for the VC in superstars Marcus Bontempelli and Jackson Macrae who are both in phenomenal form averaging 126.3 and 132.7 respectively. Despite both having average recent form against the Pies, both are in rare form and are needed to boost their team’s chances Friday night, but may get the hard tag the Pies send out.

Best choice: Brodie Grundy/Jackson Macrae

Geelong v GWS

(Saturday 1:45pm @ GMHBA)

The Giants make their way down to Geelong Saturday in the potential match of the round. The Giants will arrive with confidence and with superstars Jeremy CameronLachie WhitfieldJosh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio. Jezza can go large but is less likely to back up the big game from last week while Whitfield and his midfield team have the potential to score 130+ any week.

The Cats however are favourites and rightly so. Undefeated and playing down at their fortress they are a formidable opponent. They will be led by superstar Patrick Dangerfield who is not only in great form but has recent scores of 108, 163, 196 and 124 against the Giants. Lock him in!

Best choice: Patrick Dangerfield

Essendon v Brisbane

(Saturday 2:10pm @ MCG)

The Bombers are finally on the board with a win but face the competitions favourite up and coming side in the Brisbane Lions. Their young midfield is being led heroically by Lachie Neale who is relishing the role as #1 midfielder as well as absolutely tearing up the SC points. He will be licking his lips at the prospect of playing the Bombers who don’t usually unleash a tagger.

The Dons should be led by Zach Merrett who is capable of big scores and has a few against the Lions, but definitely not worth overlooking Neale in this one.

Best choice: Lachie Neale

Port Adelaide v Richmond

(Saturday 4:05pm @ AO)

The Tigers would be desperate to turn their form around as they see themselves under the pump for the first time in a few years. The truth is without their multitude of stars missing, they don’t have a great chance for the win, or for a deserving Captain option.

The Power will be looking to take full advantage of the Tigers guns missing and are sure to be led by Tom Rockliff this year’s surprise uber-premo candidate Travis Boak. He is in stunning form and is the likely Captaincy candidate for Port, but there is much better options available in other games.

Best choice: Travis Boak

North Melbourne v Adelaide

(Saturday 7:25pm @ Marvel)

The Kangaroos were disappointing last week, in the second half especially. They would need to lift and will get their chance against another under-performing side in the Crows. Ben Cunnington has been in good form this season but I’m not willing to back any of the Kangas in this one.

The Crows on the other hand have two much better options in Rory Sloane and Matt Crouch in this game. Both have got off to great starts this season and along with Brad Crouch are the most likely to be the top scorers from this match-up.

Best choice: Matt Crouch

West Coast v Fremantle

(Saturday 6:10pm @ OS)

The Derby looks to be a non-contest this time around as the reigning premiers have found their mojo while despite the Dockers being undefeated at Optus Stadium this season, they seem to be completely outclassed in this match.

No Nat Fyfe makes the game even harder for the underdogs but also takes away our best Captain option. The even Eagles do offer some options with the likes of Andrew GaffLuke ShueyEliot YeoJeremy McGovern and Shannon Hurn as potential options, but it’s the form player in Dom Sheed who provides the most viable option.

Best choice: Dom Sheed

Gold Coast v Carlton

(Sunday 2:40pm @ Metricon)

The Gold Coast Suns, along with the Queensland rivals are the toast of the town, and deservedly so. Many tipped the young side to win only two or three games for the year instead they could find themselves 3-1 after just four rounds. The Blues on the other hand are desperate for a win after some decent efforts with no reward.

The Suns have the likes of Jack BowesJack Martin and David Swallow who could do well in this game but without a doubt you would be silly not to go with Blues superstar Patrick Cripps in this one. Not only is he in great form on the back of his 157 last week but he also loves dominating the Suns scoring 173 last year and could do so again as he tries to get his sides first win of the season.

Best choice: Patrick Cripps

St. Kilda v Hawthorn

(Sunday 3:20pm @ Marvel)

An intriguing contest to end the round but it lacks any decent Captaincy options. Plenty of players with the potential to score well, but none I would bet on for my team. Jade GreshamJack SteeleJack BillingsRicky HendersonBen McEvoy, James Sicily and Jaeger O’Meara are good SC players, but not good enough unfortunately.

Best choice: James Sicily

Hot Sauce’s Top Picks

    1. Scott (NM) is listed as an emergency. This opens up options for me now.

      Going
      Vc Macrae
      C Neal

  1. Need to use the VC on Thursday unless other players (Atkins, Gibbons ext get dropped).

Thinking of going VC Lloyd/ C Cripps or Grundy, ideally I would like VC Grundy

    If no other omissions
    TU- C Cripps
    TD – C Grundy

  2. Have my choices down to 3. Grundy, Neale and Cripps.

Grundy up against a weak ruck line up of WB but a somewhat strong opposition midfield that could shark hit outs.

Neale in flying form and facing no tagger against a team not firing well and only just got a win against a team going 0-3.

Cripps is playing a team that has improved in a great fashion, so I wonder if it will effect Cripps in any way. Also that 173 was the only time he scored above 115 against GC.
    Thinking Grundy and Neale atm

    1. I thinking the same, but VC on either Grundy or Neale (I have Bines, not Sweet), with C on Cripps as a reliable backup.

  3. Will Danger get tagged by de Boar this week? Can probably shake it but will mean he gets 110 instead of 140

  4. Because my only loophole is Sweet, and he ‘plays’ on Friday, I’m going Oliver into Cripps. Expecting both Oliver and the Dees to bounce back, or at least perform better than late

  5. Ideally:
    VC – Grundy
    C – Cripps

But if no other loophole will need to use Sweet so probably Oliver into Cripps

  6. Grundy against English will post at least a lazy 135 and potentially could post 160+ while Cripps should dominate a smaller Gold Coast midfield for 140+.

Danger and Neale will both be tagged for half a game at least.

Thus, Grundy into Cripps for me.

    1. I’d agree with you on Neale being tagged except for the fact that he’s playing Essendon. They’re still working out how to function offensively, it’ll be a few weeks at least before they start worrying about defence

      3

    1. This was my concern with Macrae as I would expect Collingwood will tag him. Still not 100% sold, will be a last-minute decision.

If not, it’ll be one of Danger / Neale into Cripps.
