Captain’s Table – Round 6

Written by Hot Sauce on April 24 2019

Round 5 was highlighted by huge scores by less likely players while also introducing a few new premo’s to consider with the likes of Adam Treloar and Zach Merrett putting their hands up for captaincy recognition. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming games.

Richmond v Melbourne

(Wednesday – 7:35pm @ MCG)

The Tigers had another hard-fought win last week and despite Dion Prestia and Dustin Martin having big games, they have been too inconsistent to warrant serious consideration for a VC option. The Dees are in a similar position with under-performing SC scores with the only notable option being Max Gawn who has gone huge against the Tigers in the last two seasons with scores of 151 and 160. He is a genuine option for the VC this week.

Best choice: Max Gawn

Essendon v Collingwood

(Thursday 3:20pm @ MCG)

A huge Anzac Day clash at the MCG with one of the best teams in the league taking on a resurgent Bombers team who have found some touch. The Dons are led by their midfield but face possibly the biggest test possible taking on the Pies midfield juggernauts and could be caught out on the big stage. Brodie Grundy is starting to really hit his straps despite the 100 scored last week while Adam Treloar and co in the middle could get off the leash as well. Zach Merrett and Dylan Shiel are the likely options for the Bombers, but as stated earlier, the Pies may be too strong and with better options.

Best choice: Brodie Grundy

Port Adelaide v North Melbourne

(Friday 7:20pm @ AO)

Port Adelaide put on a clinic against the reigning premiers last week and now face the struggling Kangaroos. The Kangas are struggling to provide coaches with a genuine Captaincy option with their best option being hard-nut mid Ben Cunnington but wouldn’t warrant the badge. The Power’s best option would be Tom Rockliff and Travis Boak, but there are better options in other games across the weekend.

Best choice: Travis Boak

Gold Coast v Brisbane

(Saturday 1:45pm @ Metricon)

The Q Clash is certain to be a hard fought and often spiteful game but also a game of decent quality as both teams are sitting just outside the 8 and looking to boost their chances of making a shock finals birth. The Suns are an even side with a few players who are well short of the ilk required to carry the VC/C, but the Lions have one of the best choices available in superstar Lachie Neale. He is averaging 135 this season and with a recent 150+ game against the Suns he seems one of the best choices of the round.

Best choice: Lachie Neale

St. Kilda v Adelaide

(Saturday 4:35pm @ Marvel)

The Saints are flying but lack a real genuine Captain choice for us this week with the likes of Jack Steele and Jack Billings not quite up to the level. Adelaide on the other hand are struggling badly and are in desperate need of a win to get their season back on track. Crows will be led by Rory Sloane and Matt Crouch who could be excellent POD Captaincy options with the potential to go big.

Best choice: Rory Sloane

Sydney v GWS

(Saturday 7:25pm @ SCG)

It’s getting increasingly difficult to get a read on the Giants this season as they follow-up big wins with disappointing losses. They will rely on theirs stars like Lachie WhitfieldJosh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio in the middle to get them over the line against a struggling Swans side. Jake Lloyd is a solid choice from the Swans this week with the star defender yet to drop below 109 this season while Isaac Heeney and Josh Kennedy also have the potential to score well.

Best choice: Jake Lloyd

Fremantle v Western Bulldogs

(Saturday 6:10pm @ OS)

Three extremely good options here for captaincy with Dockers skipper Nat Fyfe and Doggies superstars Marcus Bontempelli and Jack Macrae all having the potential to carry your side to victory. All three don’t have amazing records against their respective opponent with Macrae averaging 100.3 and Bont averaging 102.3 in their last 3 games against the Dockers. Fyfe’s record against the Doggies is only slightly better at 108.3 over his last 3 and with the home ground advantage should be the safest choice of the three here.

Best choice: Nat Fyfe

Hawthorn v Carlton

(Sunday 3:20pm @ UTAS)

The Hawks will look to bounce back against a team coming off their first win of the season over a side that only a few weeks ago touched up the Hawks themselves. As this season is currently trending, who knows who will come out on top and win the match, but I’m backing Patrick Cripps to be the games top scorer! Cripps is in rare form and is too hard to pass up with Hawks surprise packet Ricky Henderson and star James Sicily a class below the Blues skipper.

Best choice: Patrick Cripps

Geelong v West Coast

(Sunday 4:40pm @ GMHBA)

This game promises to be an epic battle of two teams expecting to go deep into September. The Cats, despite sitting on top of the ladder, will be looking to make up for their home defeat to the Giants two rounds back while the Eagles have been left stunned twice this year and need a win just to stay inside the top 8! This will be a real arm wrestle and likely to come down to the wire, and although I’m not sure who will win the match, I’m backing Patrick Dangerfield to outscore everyone else with a score closer to the 150 mark rather than his current 114 average. He has blitzed the Eagles in recent history averaging 130.8 across the past 5 games including a 156 and a 141. Other options just aren’t as safe as Danger and don’t come with his extremely high ceiling but are the likes of Shannon HurnAndrew GaffTom Stewart and Tim Kelly.

Best choice: Patrick Dangerfield

Hot Sauce’s Top Picks

  1. Patrick Dangerfield
  2. Brodie Grundy
  3. Patrick Cripps
  4. Lachie Neale
  5. Max Gawn

Wildcard: Jeremy Cameron

  1. Great stuff HS. Plenty to choose from this week.
Just think Gawn who always scores well against the Tigers may get the chocolates this week. The Tigers are undermanned and sit 17th for clearances this year, both factors should assist. Hoping for a few intercepts too from the big man.

  2. I am whacking the V on Rockliff vs North Melbourne.

North have a bad habit of conceding big supercoach scores to the oppositions best midfielder when they lose. Fyfe, Neale & Merrett have so far benefited from North not tagging since Jacobs. has gone missing.

The fact that it is at the Adelaide Oval and at night only adds to the appeal in my opinion.

Haven’t thought that much about captaincy but possibly Fyfe or even Danger depending how I am faring in my league matches

    1. I hear you Shaggi,

One thing to note is that North actually won their only game this year at Adelaide oval. R4. V Crows.

      M Crouch 90
      Sloane 88

Were the best of the Crows mids.

Port look a much more organised team this year, I think they will run North off there feet.

I’m considering Rocky for V/C but Gawn also has a great record against Nank.

      Decisions , decisions.

      1. Your premise is sound FT but I am not anticipating a North victory (and I am a North member).

Therefore my thoughts are ‘in play’ and worth a gamble.

Besides PA seem to be a better side than Adelaide this year (so far).

Fortunately, I have the loophole where i can take this calculated gamble.
