Captain’s Table – Round 7

Written by Hot Sauce on May 3 2019

The end of Round 6 brings the end of the festival of football we’ve been spoilt with and brings the beginning of the more traditional fixture, providing us coaches with a bit more time to lock in teams with the full teams already released.

Collingwood v Port Adelaide

(Friday – 7:50pm @ Marvel)

Big Friday night game for the Power taking on the Pies for some reason at Marvel instead of the ‘G’. The likes of Tom Rockliff and Travis Boak take on Adam Treloar and Scott Pendlebury and co in a contest that is set to see what Port are capable of. Brodie Grundy should be safely backed as he is in great form averaging 131.3 over his last 3 games while scoring 162 in his last outing against the Power.

Best choice: Brodie Grundy

Melbourne v Hawthorn

(Saturday 1:45pm @ MCG)

A real make or break game for the Dees while the Hawks despite being 3-3 are not in great form can this be a fiercely close contest. The Hawks will be led by Jaeger O’MearaJames Sicily and Ben McEvoy who could all have strong games, but unlikely to outscore big Max Gawn. The big fella has turned it on in the last three weeks, which coupled with his excellent history against the Hawks which includes five consecutive centuries highlighted by a recent 168, making him close to a sure thing.

Best choice: Max Gawn

GWS v St. Kilda

(Saturday 1:45pm @ UNSW)

On the back of signing on with the Giants, midfield jet Josh Kelly is due to have a big game as he and his mates Stephen Coniglio and Tim Tarranto look to outshine the Saints hard working midfield. The Saints received a blow with Jack Steven out for an indefinite period and will rely on the likes of Jack SteeleJack BillingsSeb Ross and Jack Newnes to make up for Steven’s absence. I can’t see a better option than Kelly in this one, except possibly a big game from Shane Mumford.

Best choice: Josh Kelly

Brisbane v Sydney

(Saturday 4:35pm @ Gabba)

The Swans are reeling with just the one win to date while the plucky Lions continue to impress. The Swans still have Jake Lloyd and Josh Kennedy in excellent SC form and could provide their coaches with a captain-worthy score, but you’d be a fool to overlook SC’s #1 man. For the ~67k coaches who are lucky enough to have Lachie Neale in their side just lock him in. He will not disappoint.

Best choice: Lachie Neale

Western Bulldogs v Richmond

(Saturday 7:25pm @ Marvel)

The Tigers have found some form and despite not having an out and out SC premo, they keep finding players to score big each week like Bachar Houli, Nick Vlastuin and Dion Prestia to name a few. The Doggies on the other hand are in terrible form with four straight losses but have SC firepower in Marcus Bontempelli and Jackson Macrae. Not an easy game to pick a potential captain so will go with a safe bet.

Best choice: Marcus Bontempelli

West Coast v Gold Coast

(Saturday 6:15pm @ Optus)

Just like the Tigers, both these teams don’t have an uber premium to make your choice easy, however there are still plenty of potential big scores to be earned. I can see the Eagles getting a hold of the Suns this week with one of their guns going large. Shannon Hurn is the likeliest choice here given his form but I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the midfield group especially Elliot Yeo or Andrew Gaff rack up a heap of touches and a big score.

Best choice: Shannon Hurn

Carlton v North Melbourne

(Sunday 1:10pm @ Marvel)

Both teams are in the bottom four but with vastly different perceived form. The Kangaroos are struggling and don’t have a solid choice that’s worth overlooking some previously mentioned players. The Blues however, are also struggling for wins but have Patrick Cripps in their side to dominate SC points. I am banking on a huge game for the superstar and likely Captain choice.

Best choice: Patrick Cripps

Geelong v Essendon

(Sunday 3:20pm @ MCG)

Arguably match of the round and should be on sheer entertainment value as both teams are capable of some eye-catching football. The Cats are flying, and the Dons are exciting although yet to put their stamp on this season with a big win. There are several options for for captaincy in this game with the likes of Dylan ShielZach MerrettGary Ablett and Patrick Dangerfield all look capable of a big score or could it be one od the spearheads in Joe Daniher or Tom Hawkins to kick a bag? Merrett’s recent form gives him the nod in an almost blanket field.

Best choice: Zach Merrett

Adelaide v Fremantle

(Sunday 4:10pm @ AO)

The Dockers are surprisingly sitting second on the ladder while the Crows are starting to get on a roll on so this looks like it will be a good game to close out the round. I expect the biggest scores to be fought out between two midfield jets Nat Fyfe and Matt Crouch despite their average recent form. Both would be relied upon to lead their teams to a victory and it should be a tight battle to see who comes out on top.

Best choice: Nat Fyfe

Hot Sauce’s Top Picks

  3. Brodie Grundy

  1. Grundy and Neale to be worked over. (mult. rucks, and tagged)
Gawn into Cripps/Danger/Fyfe, so hopefully Gawn.

  2. IMO Lycett will be useful in diminishing Grundy’s influence over the game come this round, so I’m backing Gawn into Cripps.

  3. I’m questioning Neale because of the potential Hewett tag, also with the rucks as Port haven’t let any ruckman score more than 100 this season and then Gawn plays Mcevoy and does that hold back a big score in any way. Doubt kn so many players for me is a hard choice

    1. Excellent point Natopotato88 but Gawn has a terrific record against McEvoy in recent years. With Mitchell not there to win as many clearances he could be an excellent VC.
      Good luck either way!

  4. Tom Lynch into Cripps.

Cause I like to be different.
Seriously though, he has a history of kicking bags at Marvel. Riewolt is out. And hopefully the Tigers pound the Dogs. (Assuming the dogs don’t kick straight)

  5. Port has kept all rucks under 100 this season. I know it is not Grundy but I will be cautious. Like Natopotato88 I believe that Neale also may get Hewett, (Sydney and GWS this year tag like pros) so since I don’t have Gawn and I am going Cripps into Danger.

  6. For my team.
Grundy > Gawn easy peasy no mess no fuss.
Hurn Lloyd Neale Danger Kelly all good.
Rocky last week went huge in first quarter then put que in the rack. He/Port won’t have that luxury this week against the pies. For solid quarters should see him push 200 LOL.
Sloane has been disappointing but is at home against Ross’s dockers who reckons they don’t tag players.
So I’m taking an unpopular gamble
    Rocky > Sloane.
Anticipating a lot of head scratching and WY WHY WHY’s this weekend.
    Good luck all.

  7. Cripps’ record against North isn’t great, so this is one of those rare weeks where I’d advise against him. Merrett’s recent form plus great record against the Cats means he’s my choice for the C.

As to the V, I’m not sure. Lachie Neale’s record against the Swans doesn’t inspire confidence. I have plenty of players who *could* go large, but none that strike me as being particularly likely. Mumford vs Rowan Marshall could work. Marshall has conceded scores of 118 (Bellchambers), 86 (Lobb), 80 (McEvoy) and 126 (Gawn) this year – not a complete pushover, but certainly not a difficult opponent for someone as good as Mumford.
