Captain’s Table – Round 8

Written by Hot Sauce on May 10 2019

Round 7 saw 16 players score over 130 of which only 3 players were averaging 100+ before the round commenced suggesting it is becoming increasing more difficult to pick the best option each week. Let’s take a look at the round ahead.

Sydney v Essendon

(Friday – 7:50pm @ SCG)

A huge game for the Dons as they need to bounce back with some wins after consecutive losses up against a underperforming Swans. The Dons are undermanned and would be led by Zach Merrett and Dylan Shiel with the former having a few excellent games against the Swans in the last few seasons. The Swans should be a strong chance to get a win here, with Jake Lloyd and Josh Kennedy set to fire SC-wise. Kennedy loves playing the Dons with four 125+ games in his last 5 against them. With Bellchambers in doubt, the Swans mids could really get a hold of the game.

Best choice: Josh Kennedy

Carlton v Collingwood

(Saturday 1:45pm @ MCG)

The neutrals would be hoping for a close game against two of the oldest rivals, but unfortunately these two sides are on opposite sides of their development and the Pies should prove way too strong. Patrick Cripps however still poses a real threat and loves the Pies scoring 187 against them last year while averaging 126.7 over his last 3 games against the Pies and 118.2 over the last 5. The Pies will be led by Brodie Grundy as well as their midfield brigade which should ensure a win and a potential captain score.

Best choice: Patrick Cripps

Western Bulldogs v Brisbane

(Saturday 1:45pm @ Mars)

This is shaping up to be a hotly contested game as the Dogs will look to continue on from their excellent win last week while the Lions look to consolidate their spot in the 8. Lachie Neale will be sure to fire and would be a great choice as VC/C every week, but I’ll be backing a gun Dog to fire. Although Marcus Bontempelli is in better form, it’s Jackson Macrae who I’m tipping to top score in this one. Macrae has averaged an enormous 146.3 over his last three games against the Lions including 156 and 162 in his last two games.

Best choice: Jackson Macrae

Gold Coast v Melbourne

(Saturday 4:35pm @ Metricon)

The Suns are starting to drop back down the ladder and despite being a few places above the Dees on the ladder, they are huge outsiders in this game at home. The Suns aren’t offering up any captaincy options this season while the Dees are only providing the one consistent option in big Max Gawn. He has averaged 135.5 over his last four games against the Suns, including 148 & 174 – lock him in.

Best choice: Max Gawn

St. Kilda v West Coast

(Saturday 7:25pm @ Marvel)

No real clear-cut choices here with both teams providing decent options but none that are worth taking a punt over the normal bunch of options. Jack SteeleSeb RossShannon HurnAndrew GaffLuke Shuey and Elliot Yeo are amongst the most likely to top score in this game.

Best choice: Shannon Hurn

Port Adelaide v Adelaide

(Saturday 7:10pm @ AO)

A huge showdown battle looms as both teams are sitting in the lower half of the top 8 and will look to get a huge win against their fierce rivals. Port have been hit my injuries and would be hoping their quartet of rookies can lift to assist their only real Captaincy option in Travis Boak. Meanwhile the Crows have a few more options with Rory Sloane and Matt Crouch headed for a big game with Sloane averaging 143.3 over his last three showdowns looking like the best bet

Best choice: Rory Sloane

North Melbourne v Geelong

(Sunday 1:10pm @ Marvel)

Besides Ben Cunnington, the Kangas don’t provide any options worth considering while the Cats have a multitude of stars who could put up a big score. With the likes of Patrick Dangerfield (injury cloud), Joel SelwoodTim KellySam MenegolaMitch Duncanand Gary Ablett to pick between, you’d be better of staying away from this game.

Best choice: Patrick Dangerfield

Hawthorn v GWS

(Sunday 3:20pm @ MCG)

Josh Kelly returns to the Giants and with midfield help from Stephen ConiglioTim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, I can see him running wild on the MCG (third time lucky if he does fire). With the Hawks you would be expecting either Ben McEvoy or James Sicily to top the scoring, but with the Giants expecting to win it will be one of their midfield group who present the best value.

Best choice: Josh Kelly

Fremantle v Richmond

(Sunday 3:20pm @ Optus)

This game would have been completely disregarded at the start of the season but is suddenly a mouth-watering contest to close the round of. The Tigers continue to deprive us of any worthy captaincy options while the Dockers now have Luke Ryan and David Mundy providing big scores. Despite their form, you wouldn’t look past Nat Fyfe who has scored 142 in last two contests against the Tigers. He is a lock!

Best choice: Nat Fyfe

Hot Sauce’s Top Picks

  1. Nat Fyfe
  2. Max Gawn
  3. Jackson Macrae
  4. Patrick Cripps
  5. Lachie Neale

Wildcard: Stef Martin

  1. Great stuff Sauce, convinced me to trade in Macrae over the Bont. They’re 50/50 and hopefully will both feature as top 8 mids. If I use FD theory of returning to the mean then Macrae should be the better pick.

  2. Not liking Cripps this week as that 3rd average is made up of 187 92 101. With Greenwood named too, so a tag is likely, I’m not seeing a massive score.

I’m thinking of going Lloyd as VC then Grundy/Gawn to captain as I’m not liking how most of my potential choices are playing roughly the same time

    1. Greenwood hasn’t been tagging much of late. That said, rucks have done well against the Blues this season so I’m going Grundy as VC ahead of Cripps.

      1. I think a lot of the big ruck scores v Carlton were when Phillips was in ruck..?
        Kreuser back this week!

        1. Gawn is playing Witts, but seeing how well the midfielders score against the Suns, I hoping there are lots of HTA to them. Might almost consider Oliver considering how Gaff went last week against the suns.
Grundy against Kruezer is slightly concerning, but since it is the 1st week back will he be 100% fit?

        2. Grundy scores @MCG have been great bar his first against Geelong.
          82,137,132,160,134. I’m backing him in.

  3. I feel as if sticking with the Ruckpigs each week is the best option. Say Macrae pumps out 135 as VC, you celebrate going thanks Macrae but then realise that thats just an average game for Grundy.

    1. Same here

Food for thought opposing rucks v Carlton average this year is 120. Grundy to go Large

  4. Kruezer played Rd5 and 6 and McEvoy/English scored 117/99 which was both their second highest scores this year. Not to fussed with Grundy (VC) against him.

Fyfe can bring it home on Sunday.

  5. have no captain loop due to having all green ticks in my team so does anyone have info on whether or not Danger will be a late out? Cheers

  6. Tough week for me, gonna run with Lloyd VC into Grundy. Only real C options are Cripps, Neale, Grundy and Gawn. I can’t VC Grundy into Gawn as was planned due to having a game myself.

  7. Had a look at my tech team and it isn’t clear choice, but i am going with a completely left field choice of Williams as C if Grundy fails as VC. After Williams 140 last week and Whitfield still out i feel confident enough to back him in. Last 2 weeks of 121 and 140 when Whitfield was injured/out.
