Carlton – One Supporter’s Perspective

Written by Motts on August 29 2012

Brett Ratten is a champion of the club who deserves to be treated with respect. If the rumours are correct that he won’t get to coach this week that would be a disgrace and I, for one, would be filthy.

Having said that, all of the chatter and innuendo is coming from outside the club at the moment. To their credit, Carlton are saying nothing to fuel it. They will hold a post-season review after R23 and that is how it should be.

My view is that they should stick with him. The club signed him up for 2 years at the end of last season for a reason: he’s a good coach. You’d be hard pressed to find a coach who could’ve done better with a list that was decimated by injuries – Laidler, Murphy, Jamison, Carrazzo, Yarran, Warnock, Hampson, Henderson…. all of them spent considerable time on the bench this year. And lets not forget the captain being outed for 4 weeks late in the season.

To give the list to someone else now would mean in the event of success that they would accept the credit for the hard work that was put in by this coaching group.

Yes there were low points this year – the Port Adelaide and Gold Coast losses were two of the worst in our proud history – but there was also a lot of positive signs: we beat Collingwood and Richmond twice, we blooded some exciting your talent, and at times we played great football.

The players still love playing for the guy. Let him see out his contract.

  1. Hey Motts, I know you love those Blue boyz…. and couldn’t agree more that he should coach out the season. However, I would disagree with next year. The Blues have a stong list, certainly a top-8 list (almost top-4) and I don’t think anyone can use injuries as an excuse as every team has had plenty. Also, the majority of big-guns were back for the GC game, though I don’t think any coach should be sacked for one bad game (see Dean Bailey), but the Blues have had a bad season, my humble opinion is that he isn’t a great coach… and if I was in charge, or if I was a Carlton supporter I would say he has had plenty of years, missed the top 8. Thanks for your time, lets see if we can get someone else in to get the job done. The Blues-Window is Open…… Also, not sure Mick is the answer, I’d be thinking more the Chris/Brad Scott mould would be the way to go…… BS’s 2 cents.

  2. Ratten is a well respected coach by all accounts, but Malthouse was/is the best in the business in my opinion. Rats just can’t seem to get it done. When you look at some of the games you guys let go, mainly Port and GC, and you compare the lists. Carlton are a clearly superior team. If the team is better but still losing, blame must fall upon the coach.

You should be dirty if he doesn’t get to finish the season. As much as I didn’t like Primus I was dark when he didn’t finish it up.

  3. bomber thompson was beign qstn buy geelong after underperorming cats in the early 2000’s….it ended up pretty good for the cats in sticking by him….

then again have to ask yourself….is the price your going t have to pay to potentially get a malthouse definately getting you more long term success?

would you take malthouse and say T cloke (according to rumours)????

or keep ratten and use the $$$$ to upgrade with multiple positions?

  4. Hopefully the Blues come out and smash the Saints this week in support of Ratts!

Think I will place $50 on the Blues to win by 40 plus, paying $9.50.
60 plus is paying $23, could be chucking my money away although I like a risk

  5. The blues tanked to get good players and now they are found wanting with an inferior coach.
Make no mistake about it, -ratten and the blues are not comparable to bomber and the cats – it’s st kilda and thomas all over again…..

I was there watching the rd 3game (blues vs dons) as an impartial, I might add, and there I saw a soften of the blues – oh pish posh about injuries – like west coast, collingwood, hawthorn, freo etc…. haven’t had their fair share of woes – the only rational thing to do is sack ratten and go for mick while you can….. carlton lost to the suns when chasing finals football. Unacceptable.

  6. Rattens been a good coach but it isn’t his fault this year due to long injurys (murph carrots ect), as a carlton supporter i think his time is up, i want malthouse to coach carlton as i think he will get carltona premiership in 2-5 years easily but there are also rumours that the “Spud” cloke is going to follow him, he is shit and a waste of money carlton don’t need another fooward.

Malthouse Move to carlton pl0x no cloke.

  7. Sorry Motts but I gotta disagree with some of what you said.

Ratts is a good coach and it’s a shame he won’t be coaching next year. I think he’s done well with what he’s been able to put on the park this year, but let’s be honest most of carltons list is overrated.
Judd is past his best, Gibbs is never going to be a star at the rate he’s going, Betts is carrying your forward line and the defense line has nothing.
I think a change of coach might be what some of this players, like Gibbs and Yarran, need to improve. If Ratts stays and you don’t recruit well I can’t see Carlton making the eight next year aswel. I just think that Collingwood, Sydney, Hawthorn, Eagles, Adelaide, Geelong, Roos and Fremantle are all ahead of them, and with Richmand, Essendon and St Kilda around about the same as Carlton.

  8. As a bombers supporter I loved watching carlton lose on the weekend but its nor rattens fault. Why is so much of the blame always heaped on the coaches?. The players played the game. You can’t just blame the coach because he couldn’t “get the best out of the group”. The blues should have have beaten the suns in their sleep. Nothing but a bit of a rev up pre game needed. Especially when playing for finals. But the players came out and didn’t show any guts. Didn’t go hard at the football or the opponent and didn’t play like we all know they can. Its not like gazza kicked 5 goals got 40 disposals and its ratten’s fault for not finding a way to shut him down. They got beaten all over the park. I think for loses like that the onus should be more on the players than the coach. In saying that ending ratten’s contract to get malthouse could be a good idea simply because he is a better coach then ratten. So why wouldn’t you want him. Chances are the loss on the weekend is just going to be a good excuse for the board to change coaches.

Btw we should have threads like this for all the big offseason issues. Its been great reading everyones pov 🙂

  9. Long time Blues member and I’ve been back and forth on this all season. I’ve arrived at the conclusion that their greatest shortcoming is ‘inconsistent ticker’. There have just been too many games they come sauntering out of the gate like they’re going to a picnic. Sure, they get up for Collingwood and Essendon but then they lose to GC. In my book that’s a coaching issue. Having said that, I don’t necessarily think Malthouse is the answer. I would enjoy it only for the apoplexy it would cause McGuire. However, if the deal ends up including Cloke, they’ll never see another cent of my money.

  10. I suspect a lot of the reason for letting go of Ratten is that Malthouse has announced if he doesn’t coach next year, he won’t ever. It’s the old urgency sell. If he’d said he wanted to take another year off with a view to return in 2014, I reckon they’d have let Ratten’s contract play out.

The big question is – what happens when Malthouse does a switcheroo and decides in October he doesn’t want to coach any more – leaves the Blues in a bit of a dire position.

  11. I gotta say its looking like Malthouse is heading to Visy park next year and my sneaking suspicion is that Cloke will follow.

  12. I hate the Blues but im a firm believer that if the board has a problem with the coach they should let em coach out the season not sack em half way through the season or with one week left.At the end of the day Brett Ratten doesnt pull on the boots its up to the players too show a bit of heart on the field and against Gold Coast they showed none. If Ratten gets too coach on the weekend i believe the Blues will win…

  13. I guess it is a done deal now for one of the most respected people in the game. I am a dyed in the wool tiger and have a power of respect for Ratts as a player and a coach.

If they apply the same benchmark to other Carlton personnel then perhaps Sticks who has delivered JFS in his time at the helm be the next to get punted, followed by Gibbs who promised so much but delivers so little, Judd who as captain gets suspended again for highly questionable conduct, Carrots and Murph who through no fault of their own get their shoulder’s smashed, Scotland for being accused of smashing some punter, Kreuzer who is yet to be worth tanking how many games for??? and the list goes on.

I am jack of clubs (including Richmond) sacking good people for the sake of poor managment structures and sub-standard player performances. Ratten has something a lot of others in the current game don’t have – integrity.

  14. Hmmmmmm.

This is a hard one for me isn’t it. My intense dislike for Carlton is well documented and I find myself hard pressed to feel any sympathy for any of them. You do however have to put it all in perspective….The AFL is first and foremost a business, as is the running of a football club. Every club in it’s history has done the same thing (re Ratten) and will do it again. If you take away the wonderful passion that we supporters put into this great game, it is morally acceptable to hire and fire to the benefit of the company. If someone is hired to do a job but has not achieved the required target given a substantial amount of time and someone with a proven record of success is available then the powers that be would themselves be a liability to the company by not pulling the trigger.

As far as Ratten is concerned, he has had at his disposal, a number of high draft picks (tanking 😉 ), a number of good players and a couple of great players and Chris Judd but has never achieved a higher placed finish than 5th in a 4 year tenure where Carlton has been “coming” and “cooking” for a few years now. He has underachieved with the list and now the list needs an overhaul and I doubt Ratts has the capacity to do that where as Malthouse has done successfully before with Premierships being the result.

I also wish fervently, with the abuse from Carlton fans about our Knights to Hird still fresh in my mind, hope that it backfires and blows up in your collective “we are Carlton” faces and your next premiership success is 20-30 years away. 👿
