With players like Bugg & Ellis, there are better options.

Got Clarke at the moment but if Guthrie gets named I’ll be tempted to switch, think Bower will be in and out all season

I think Clarke will be good but I will try to find a cheaper option. Morris, Spur (if elevated) maybe even shaw with rutten injured.
Does anybody else like the look of shaw?

A google search on Spurr at this point is not promising for him being elevated for R1

74 people voted neither, I find that staggering. So much value in the backline this year that I would have thought you have to have at least one of these guys.
PS: So sick of looking at my team, I wish the footy could start in earnest today.

Alot of talk over the last few days about bower stepping in.
Ratten has mentioned him a few times in recent interviews but its always “guys like bower need to come in and perform”.
Personally I feel bower will play games but will be in and out, mostly out once injuries return.
Im hoping clarke can hold down his spot.
Are there players at the pies that will take clarkes spot if he doesnt stand up?

I think Yagmoor and Buckley will be competing with him. All I’ve been hearing is that N Buckley loves Clarke which seems to be in his favour for JS. Although all three of these guys don’t have the best JS and from NAB still can’t get a real understanding of them as they have played different roles due to injuries in there respective teams.
One of these guys will be in my team out of Clarke and Guthrie. Just wish I knew JS. Need them to play 7-9 games straight score 70-80 and I’ll be happy.

I posed this on twitter, so thanks heaps to sctalk starting a poll. Seems clarke is the popular choice. Just have a feeling that guthrie might be the one to pay off if only could work out whether or not he’ll get a sustained run at it. In the end I think it might just come down to selection in fridays paper! Bower will get games for at least 3 weeks unless he really stinks it up, so might be a good bet for some quick cash… Still confused…. My brain hurts.

I’m going with neither. Had to cut Clarke to afford the Watson > Pendlebury change unfortunately. Went to all costs to get Pendles, Ablett, Murphy, Selwood in the mids. I’m confident it should pay off.

I like your thinking MJ. I’ve got what you had but would have had to cut more than Clarke to get Pendles. I am looking forward to getting a glimpse of your side when the lockdown is on.

its good having 2 super coach teams going with different strategies and players because you have more to look out for during games, heaps more fun, in saying that anyone who does not have at least one of those guys has no idea.
Clarke: averaged 75 across 3 seasons consistent and buckley loves him
Guthrie: had an excellent preseason and is likely to take over the milburn role and get some permanent footy this season.
Bower: with the exception of an injury ridden 2011 campaign averaged 86.5 and 76.7 in the previous seasons respectively. rattan also has been happy with bowers player of late and there is plenty of opportunity with cartons injured back line.
another not mentioned and generally disliked: Courtney Dempsey- back to good form and is someone who averaged 77 and 74.9 as a consistent lock in essendons back line in the last 2 years before his injured 2011 campaign.
-really I’m glad no one is getting on these cheap back line players because that turns them into POD for me and the minority that have them and will reap the benefits of them. of course have the likes of bugg and ellis in your team but there is room for these more experienced and only slightly more expensive options.
Hot debate. What do you think?

not sure if WE who do not have any of them have No idea. Think there is logic in having and not having them.
The argument against is that if you can get a rookie priced player ($110k) to average 60 – 70 then they will increase by as much (and as fast) as the above mentioned players given the lower starting base. Then if you spend the spare $60-70k elsewhere and pick up 10-20ppg then you’ve come out on top.
Food for thought #imusthavenoidea

yeah i see that argument but i think the younger players is a more riskier choice in that they are likely to miss games and be a a lot more inconsistent as a whole. outside of bugg, morris, ellis, boumann and spur there isn’t that many good rookie defenders who are going to produce at the consistent level of the above mentioned names.
- in essence i guesse thats what makes the game so interesting, you have to choose which way your going to play it and one way is going to turn out and the other is going to fall short. i just can’t wait until they release all the teams for the rest of the round 1 games.

The problem is you are basing your assumptions on Clarke, Guthrie and Bower playing every week and scoring those averages. I hardly think any of them have great JS for starters.
We could go round and round all day but your right that it is interesting seeing everyones different ideas and until the season starts none of them are wrong.
P.S Just think you could stop short in saying everyone who doesn’t believe in your ideas has No idea

I guess you will need to weigh up the JS of Clarke v Smedts. I have smedts on my def bench but am not confident he will get the game time. Clarke should. The other thing is that Pendles price is inflated atm and it will drop as I think he has to maintain a 135-140 avrage to keep that price.
Like or Dislike:

Yeah, I’m actually thinking of reverting back to having Clarke in defence as I’m not sure on the JS of Smedts, Morris and Spurr so could run into trouble in that respect. Need to find an extra $40K to switch one of them up to Clarke. Maybe having a POD premium in the middle wouldn’t be such a bad idea after all anyway. Priddis has always been fairly underrated. I had him last year and he was pretty solid.

I tend to try and over analyse things but that has alarm bells on it for me.

Hey MJ
I think those rumours that were floating around a while ago about swanny has somthin to do with people being scared of picking him me included!!!

Motts scared everyone off him early on in the piece with his ‘alleged’ rumors of a third strike for drugs. A few interesting stories floated around and he was dropped from the leadership group. I believe that this was all a part of a Motts masterplan to get everyone off him and then select Swanny himself. I knew there was a reason that he hasn’t showed us all his team yet.
Hot debate. What do you think?

I had Swan early doors but to me his general attitude this pre season has me troubled, he seems uninterested in football if you ask me. Talk of retiring in 3 years and his pre season not being anything to write home about just feels like he has lost a bit of drive but I’m sure he’ll be right once the season comes around and makes me regret it. Although I brought Pendles in as his replacement so I’m not losing much.

Have Clarke at the minute and possibly looking to downgrade to try and strengthen my mids
What do people think of the Def/Mid DPP this year – considering running with Goddard as a Mid so can use the DPP though not sure if it’w worth it.
Also is running with Lake and Golby, two mid-priced Def’s too much of a risk?

You would have to think with Hayes back thats going to harm NDS scoring ability whereas Boyd and doggies have new game style with high possie meaning Boyd could increase his output. Thats just my logic. But either could serve you well.

Nick Dal Santo has only averaged less than 112 once in the last 7 seasons. Pretty sure Lenny has been playing alongside of him in the majority of games over that period. It’s actually quite strange that everyone discounts picking him in their side every season, when you’d be hard pressed to find someone who has got a better long term average than this guy. Hardly misses a game too.

Tonights actually the first night all preseason I’m considering him Catta. He’s so underrated in the Supercoach world. I mean, the guy’s averaged 115.17 across the last 7 years!!! He’s not in at the moment, but probably would grab a spot if he was a little cheaper. Could potentially find himself in my side by the weekend though.

I think his standard deviation and propensity to be successfully tagged has affected his SC popularity. What most SC coaches have probably not factored in though is that the hard tag has gone to Joey since his massive 2010 year.

I have to admit MJ, gg’s continual positive posts regarding NDS has made me look into him myself this pre-season. I just cannot bring myself to dropping any of my current selected mids.. from Ablett, Pendles, Murph & JSelwood to get him in. Good luck in your decision making MJ!

I have Clarke and i have now changed Bower to Guthrie. Really not sure on this one. Bower may score higher in the few games he plays but no matter how well he plays i can’t see him retaining his spot in the team. He’s clearly towards the end of the queue of Blues backmen.

Defender dilemma
Goddard, Deledio, Shaw, Broughton, Clarke, Ellis, Bugg, Morris and ?
Currently have Boumann to fill the spot, though not sure about JS. Have thought about Sierakowski, again JS (needs to be elevated off rookie list also). Possibly Docherty, Spurr, Smedts…
Dont normally ask, but have spent too much time thinking about it, and could use some advice. Have 50K left, though would like to keep that for upgrades.
Cheers Brian.
