Corrective Trading – Rd3 2019

Written by Schwarzwalder on April 1 2019

Ok Coaches, one of the most important weeks of the season is already upon us…….corective trading week.   For the Coaches out there that have followed the site for a while, you’ll know that we like to get as much information out there as possible, but ultimately you make the final decision on your team.

Since there have been a number of requests about corrective trading threads/posts, I’ve taken it upon myself to walk our Coaches through the procedures in this hastily-prepared, poorly-written, shockingly-researched shambles of an article 😉

First off the bat…………get your rookies in order!  If there are any rookies that you missed/overlooked (for whatever reason) before Rd1 that are about to appreciate sharply in value, they are your #1 priority.  It’s a long season and the best way to upgrade quickly to your ‘ideal team’ is to have the right rookies in place early.

Secondly………as always, trades are gold!  Injuries occur, suspensions creep in……and you’ll need every trade up your sleeve later in the year.  If you have already been forced to make a corrective trade or two after Rd1, then I would advise against making too many moves this week.  Ideally you still want a minimum of 28 trades in hand after this weekend.

Thirdly………if you are trading out a player that you saw as a ‘keeper’ for the season, then please trade in kind and replace them with another ‘keeper’.  Try to avoid a ‘stepping stone’ option if you can.  That will burn trades now and burn more down the track.

Fourthly………Tom Rockliff (PTA)……if you started with him then I congratulate you.  I’ve been let down by the man far too often that I just can’t bring myself to trade him in.  That’s just my opinion.  If you think he’ll keep up this form for another 21 weeks without injury problems then that’s your decision.

I’ll put my neck on the line a bit here and provide my own opinion on some players to trade IN/OUT……………

PLAYERS TO TRADE OUT

DISCLAIMER – If you still have 30 trades in hand and your rookies are looking fine then I can fully justify making corrective trades on the following ‘premos’……..

DEFCallum Mills (SYD), Andrew McGrath (ESS), Heath Shaw (GWS). If you have any of these three guys, get rid of them, they’re not Top10 DEFs, deal with it and move on.

BIG QUESTION MARK on Kade Simpson (CAR).  About to drop a lot of value but you should never write the guy off. Has been a Top10 DEF as long as I can remember.  Go with your gut feeling on this one………

MID – I’m gonna say it’s safe to trade out Steele Sidebottom (COL) if you have him (and over 6% of Coaches do).   He’ll have his big days but overall Treloar, Beams and Pendles are ahead of him in that midfield.

BIG QUESTION MARK on Dustin Martin (RIC), Zach Merrett (ESS) & Elliot Yeo (WCE).  Of the trio, I’d probably hold Merrett if I had him in my team.  As badly as the Bombers are doing, he’s still scoring at 1.2 points per minute which is quite impressive considering their form.  Go with your gut on Dusty and Yeo.  As a rabid Tigers supporter, I know he was tagged on the weekend but he just doesn’t seem to have the fire in his belly.  Not sure he or Yeo can turn it around and be Top10 MIDs?

FWD – Safe to get rid of David Mundy (FWD), can’t see him turning it around sufficiently to be a Top10 FWD.  Replace him with a keeper while he still has value.  I’m also adding Christian Petracca (MEL) to that list as well as Jordan De Goey (COL).  Petracca is not quite there yet and De Goey is being played as a pure forward.  Despite having a blinder against Richmond, only came away with 80 pts.  I love watching the guy play footy but it won’t translate into big SuperCoach scores.

BIG QUESTION MARK on Isaac Heeney (SYD), Josh Dunkley (WBD) & Devon Smith (ESS).  Personally I’d hold on these guys for now.  But if you feel the urge to trade one/two of them then do it now or forever hold your peace 😉

PLAYERS TO TRADE IN

DEFLachie Whitfield (GWS), Jake Lloyd (SYD)

MIDNat Fyfe (FRE), Lachie Neale (FRE), Jack Macrae (WBD), Patrick Cripps (CAR)

FWD Tim Kelly (GEE), Robbie Gray (PTA), Jack Gunston (HAW)

Historically, Fyfe doesn’t play a full season so it’s probably last chance to bring him in.  These guys have started well and look to be in it for the long haul this year.  They look like safe picks for their respective lines……..

Happy to answer any questions you may have.  Hopefully this ‘guide’ was helpful for your team……..

  1. What do you think about Boak? Considering trading Heeney to Boak, have 30 trades and happy with rookies. Thoughts?

    1. No doubt he’s started well, but if memory serves me correctly, he hasn’t averaged more than 95pts over a season for 2-3 years now. I’d probably let him go (if I hadn’t started him), but if you’re confident he can hold his form then get on now or not at all……

      1. Been a while since he’s played purely mid too though Schwarz. He definitely wont keep up this scoring but I can see him going at 100ish.

Anyone watching Port can see his role is vastly different than the last few years

        1. Would probably wait to see what his role in the side is like one Wines comes back in before you commit.

  2. Martin for Kelly

Enables be switch Kelly to forward Line and trust rookies in mids
    midfield will be
Macrae Cripps Oliver Crouch Steele Walsh

  3. Missing Parker in forward line
However reluctant to trade Balta as feel he will get opportunities especially if named this week.
Do I trade out Heeney and use cash following week to upgrade to anyone.
    T/ u Parker for Heeney
    T/ d Balta

  4. should i trade English to Philips
have Gawn, but not enough $ to go grundy
so should i hold English a week or two and go him to grundy
or get Philips and use cash on def or mid premo
have 3 rookies both lines atm
also not sure of philips js

    thumbs up hold English
    thumbs down English to Philips

    1. Wait until teams are named. As debated earlier, Philips might have to make way for Kreuzer unfortunately

    1. Personally would hold Darling if you started with him. Would be looking to get Lloyd in fairly soon though, he’s making a big difference for those Coaches that started him….

    1. Haven’t tried the app this year tbh…….working fine straight on the site. Has been quite reliable from this end…..

    2. Clearly the App’s not a fan of trading either! It’s almost impossible to trade on my phone.

  6. What is going on with Toby Greene anyone need info my team relies on him pl aging and I’m in the top 1% need help

    3

    1
    1. He was pretty much rested for the game where he’d have to travel to Perth. Round 1 was his first full match as he only played 35% of one JLT match coming off injury. He should be fine going forward. I’m holding. His round 1 score at his price is good. Stay the course a lil longer i say. Early days.

      4

      1
    2. I should probably have him on the list above with Mundy, Petracca & De Goey. They’re already managing him after one game back, not good signs. Can’t see him being a Top10 FWD. Would personally cut him loose while I still can…….

      11

      5
      1. Greene is owned by over 20% of teams, so I probably should’ve expected the thumbs down 😉 Still stand by the comment though…..I guess time will tell if I predicted correctly

        6

        1
      2. I have Greene, and will definitely cut him even if named. The problem is I can’t afford anyone (385k including Greene). I think I’m going to roll the dice and flip Heeney to fund Kelly or Lloyd. As good as Heeney was at the start of last year, he only scored two tons after Round 12. I understand the argument that he’ll still finish top 6-8, but people argued that with Hibberd last year, who started as the second most expensive DEF and didn’t score a ton all season.

        7

        0
      3. If Greene ends up being a top 9 or 10 fwd awesome, he stays in my team. But at 354k and a BE of 50 he’s going up. Last year he had 7 games in an injured year where he avg 73. His avgs prior were 96, 90, 82, 102, 73, 95. I can see him avg about 90 again this year. 80 at worst, 100 at best. If he avgs 90 he will potentially get up to about 485k. That’s 130k increase. If a rookie got that you’d say that’s ok. From there he’s your last upgrade in your fwd line, hopefully you a fallen premium. Up to you, but I’m 100% sticking it out. He’s definitely not losing money…

  7. made a dumb call on jroo and obv he has to go but what if somebody has mills too, should he be traded (asking for a friend hehe)

    4

    0
    1. Unlucky with the injury, would move him on to one of the FWDs named above. If you can’t upgrade Mills to Lloyd or Whitfield then I’d probably bite the bullet and bring in Z.Williams or B.Smith. Looks like they might be able to hang around at D6/D7 for the year……..

      3

      0
    1. Honestly after this round I have no intentions in making any trades until R6/7. Unless a cow is on the bubble or needs culling and LTI’s.
My plan (lol) is to have around 28 trades still by R6/7 then start upgrading my team while taking byes into account.

      4

      5
    2. I’v done about 6 trades already this week – traded out Heeney then traded Heeney back in….and still no idea what what to do about him.

I already have Danger & T Kelly. I have used no trades. I don’t need to make any rookie corrective trades. The dodgy ankle will come good, but I’m concerned that if he continues to get no midfield time, there’s a good chance he won’t end up a top 6 forward, and will have decreased in value significantly. So IF he’s to be traded out, I’m thinking this is the week – before the price drop.

TU: Trade out Heeney – looking at either Gunstan, Gray or Dahlhaus
TD : Deep breath, hope Horse sees the light & plays him in the guts, and continually repeat “Trades are GOLD” (plus Sydney play Carlton this week!)

      5

      19
      1. With Danger & Kelly already there, is it worth bringing in a 3rd Cat in Dahlhaus. Because that might lead to an urge for a fourth Cat later on (Menegola) 😉
Tough call with Heeney, really is a question of personal preference……

        5

        1
        1. Yeah, Dahl worries me, he wasn’t great last season, so leaning more towards Gunstan. And R Gray, think I’ll wait and see what the return of Wines in a few weeks does to his scoring. So now its just to make the decision…will be interested to see what other coaches are doing, as sure this is one of the hot topics this week, and will no doubt feature in the weekly poll.

          2

          0
        2. Thinking if McCartin and KJack come into the Swans side this week both forwards
          T/U Heeney play more midfield
T/D Heeney play more forward as previous 2 rounds

          18

          1
  8. What are your thoughts on trading Rozee in? Currently sitting with Joyce and Hore on the bench and the main backs (Clarke, Duursma and Scrimshaw) on field.

Would do Joyce to Rozee and be left with $4.5k & 28 trades.

    5

    5
    1. Steven May is out this week so Hore might get another run. Wait till teams are named before making the last call…..

  9. Alright I have both Heeney and Dunkley but I think I need to get rid of one!
Am thinking straight swap T/U – Heeney out – Kelly in.

Or a least favoured option T/D – Both out – Kelly and Worpal in and take the cash

Too early for two trades me thinks!

    16

    3
    1. Heeney is a major concern me . Looks /is injured, little chance of playing big midfield minutes and only 2 tons in his last 12 matches. I have both as well but Heeney is a way bigger concern than Dunkley. Dunkley could be an ok F6 and Heeney has a lot of work to do to be a top 10 forward come end of the year

      3

      9
      1. Everyone keeps saying Heeney looks injured but having watched both his games I doubt it’s anything major. He’s just working his way into the season and his scores are poor because Sydney have been poor. He doesn’t need mid minutes to score well, just look at last year. Of course it helps, and he will get them as sydney builds, but regardless I can’t see him not being a top 6 forward. Those considering trading him out will be in regret city when he starts pumping out tons soon.

        6

        1
    2. I have Heeney and Dunkley and I’m holding. They haven’t had shockers & are long term premos – I’d be very surprised if they both didn’t end the year in top 10 fwds, injuries permitting.

      18

      1
      1. I’m holding both too. For the same reasons I held Grawndy and Oliver after one shit score each. They’ll come good. Both of them. Am not even that disappointed with Dunkley.
Don’t get it, but each to their own.

        7

        0
    1. Greene OUT is probably the right move. Gut feeling is that he won’t play more than 12 games this year and that could be well spread out. Lycett is a big rollercoaster player, just don’t expect a 130+ every week……

      5

      0
  10. Trade martin for Kelly and Elliot for Moore? Then have ability to switch kelly forward or move Moore back. Still have heeney as a worry but thinking of holding on him…

    5

    0
    1. Martin for Kelly is justifiable as you’re bringing in a keeper up FWD. If you started Elliott over Moore just two weeks ago, then I’d probably leave that alone. Elliott is capable of kicking 4-5 goals at any stage and is just working his way into fitness……

      4

      0
  11. Freo fans probably wish Neale was still at (FRE), but alas, he’s now at (BRI)

The only 2 id consider trading out are Heeney (F2), and J.Lyons (M5)… I’d keep Heeney, but with just $9k in the bank im torn:

T/U: Lyons to Rocky (+$97k, ~+ avg), save a trade now
T/D: Lyons to Neale, via Heeney FWD ($96k+) downgrade

    8

    3
  12. Just expanding on the third point (about trading keepers for keepers and not stepping-stones): I basically agree, but I would add that this doesn’t mean you can’t bring in a cheaper player; it just means that if you do bring in a mid-pricer (e.g. Worpel, Caleb Daniel), you want to be doing so because you think they’re a keeper.

Swapping out a dodgy keeper for a promising cow is also a decent option – building a bank early gives you the ability to upgrade without downgrading, thus saving trades.

    7

    1. Thanks Sal.

Just on that last point, does this mean if a coach downgraded say Heeney to Lincoln McCarthy, pocketed the cash for a future keeper, that would be an “acceptable” use of corrective trading?

*That’s if the coach didn’t believe Heeney was a keeper.

      3

        1. Thanks for your thoughts.

          I reckon I’m keeping Heeney.

Just shy of bringing in a genuine keeper in any line, so I reckon I’m waiting for teams to be announced, then I’ll fix up rooks if required.

Good luck to you champ 🙂

  13. I’ll be trading Heeney to Lloyd. It will feel good racking up those points rather than cursing him all game! 😀

That’ll leave me with 28 trades. Will hold for a few weeks while the cows fatten up – injuries permitting.

    6

    0
    1. I’d take Worpel out of those two. In either case, it’s a speculative pick:

      • If you take Worpel, you’re speculating that he’ll keep this level of output up. Now, barring an unexpected role change, I don’t see why he shouldn’t do so, but ultimately it’s still speculation.
      • If you take Rockliff, you’re speculating that his body will hold up. History says it probably won’t.

  14. What do we think of Daniel Rich? I have 29 trades left (last week did Balta or Parker)

I have Mills and want to trade him out for Lloyd but can’t really afford it – Rich is same price….Can afford a Sicily/Crisp but would need to offload Heeney for Worpal.

    My team:
D: Laird, Whitfield, Mills, Moore, Scrimshaw, Duursma (Ridley, Hore)
M: Fyfe, Trelor, Cogs, Brayshaw, Rocky, Libba, Walsh, Constable (Butters, Scott)
F: Danger, Heeney, Newnes, Setterfield, Drew, Parker (Burgess, Petraculle)
    R: Grundy, Gawn (Clarke)

If Ridley gets picked this week, I move Moore forward and stick Burgess on bench in defence.

Need help on Mills question above.

Any other ideas or suggestions to improve this team very much welcome.

    TU: Mills for Rich
TD: Mills for Silicy/Crisp (I prefer Crisp) and Heeney for Worpal – leaves me $55k in bank BUT I want to keep Heeney.

    Help!!!

    3

    3
    1. Mills -> Rich, you’re just trading one problem for another in my opinion. Rich is one of those guys that puts together great patches of SC scores for 4-5 rounds, then disappears.

      2

  15. Hi Folks.

Overall consensus is to hold Heeney – which I think I’ll do. I was debating Worpel for long time before round 1, he looks to be more important now with Shiels and Burgoyne out for a few weeks with hamsters…

I took a punt on Walters at F3 (risky bet) which paid off first round but he pulled in a 50 in R2. He’s a volatile SC scorer but massive upside if he can develop consistency, and given his price…

How do others see Walters – thoughts on a swap to Worpel or wasted trade? It would free up about $80K to upgrade Goldy to Gawn (Gawn set to drop $40K this week). I would probably hold Worp till the bye then upgrade – he’s estimated to rise to about $450K at which point I’ve made about $60K, plus freed up cash from Walters trade.

    Thanks!

    6

    5
  16. TU: Coniglio to Fyfe, Simpson to Crisp
TD: Simpson to Lloyd, Heeney to Worpel

Let me know if I amdoing something wrong here please

  17. What are people’s opinions on Martin? Just a few shockers or something serious?

    Sheed looking v tempting

  18. Hi

I’m thinking trading out Martin to sloane and hore to parker. What do u think of that move?
Or Martin to neale and Heeney to either worps boak or parker?

    Thanks.

    1

    1
    1. Hey Walid,
Hore might still play this week with May being ruled out. If you’re confident of Sloane being a Top10 MID for the season, then this is the week to make that move…….

      1

  19. I have had enough of McGrath and Greene. McGrath is affected by the Essendon Slump form, Greene I just don’t know. The rookies I have are :
In def : Collins Duursma, Scrimshaw
    Forward: Drew Burgess, Petrucelle
I am willing to do just one corrective trade, should I go
TU McGrath to Rozee or Clarke
    TD Greene to Parker
Comment if I should do 2 corrective trades and why. Please help I am still a newbie.

    0

    4
    1. I’d do Greene to Parker. Greene has had a few weeks’ pre-season at best, is injury-prone and plays for a club that tell the media Jack-sh!t about the details on any injuries. Just do that one. If that leaves you enough to turn McGrath into Lloyd or Whitfield (in that order) presuming it fits your byes and not-haves, I’d do that too.
If you don’t have enough for either or already own them both, then Crisp might also be an option for you. Just let the community know how much cash you do have and am sure you’ll get some decent recommendations.
      Good luck!

      1. Thanks @Allsaints. In Defense I have
Lloyd , Z.Williams, McGrath, B Smith, Moore, Duursma (Collins, Scrimshaw)
So I will just bring in Parker FWD and save the money for Withfield. Thanks

  20. Thoughts on trading Martin and Hind to Rockcliff and Davies-Uniacke. Would leave me with some spare coin and make me some money in the long run.

  21. With midfield Rookies job security being highest priority, I’ve started the year with Cousins ($219,900) avg 82 (72 & 92) with projected rise of $44.8K

Was seemingly sharing some of Tom Mitchell’s midfield time with Worpal during JLT.

Question: Hawks have listed Shaun Burgoyne and Liam Shiels both with hamstring injures, is this the opportunity for Cousins?

I have $482K and having taken a punt on both him and Libba, he’s the only one in consideration to be traded up to a Rocky/Sheed type (or anyone under $701K).

    Thumbs up: Hold.
    Thumbs down: Spend some $$$$!

    11

  22. Thanks for all these posts guys, you’re amazing and really helpful to us rookie coaches. Im probably asking a dumb question (refer my team name…) but are you suggesting long term gain in tidying up my rookies this week, as opposed to (say) HeeneyOUT/WorpolIN and DustyOUT/SheedIN(or RockyIN)?

    My rookies are:
DEF on field Clark, Duursma – Bench; Hore, McKay(lockout error)
MID o/f Walsh, Scott – Bench Setterfield, Gibbons, Wicks
FWD o/f Drew, Petruccelle – Bench; Burgess, Balta
    $3,700 in bank

Im thinking BaltaOUT for Parker ($$$ increase), but the other trade not so sure.
Not sure I can get a rookie defender trade, so
    T/U Fix rookies
T/D Parker for Balta, and Sheed/Rocky for Dusty (and bank some $$)

    3

    1
    1. This is a tricky one. I can see the temptation to get rid of Dusty, but it’d also be helpful to your team to bring in Constable

      1

      0
    2. Agree with Schwarz. Who’s on your RUC bench?! If it’s a loophole option, take Constable for Wicks (whoever he is!!)
      Good luck!

      0

      0
  23. With JRoo out, I can only see Dusty playing more FWD time than he already is, on the chopping block.

    T/U: Dusty –> Davies-Uniacke & Balta –> D. Moore + 150k (2 fwd rooks on field)
    T/D: Dusty –> B. Smith & Hore –> D. Moore (Have to field Parker)

    0

    0
      1. Worpel might just be. It’s a shame Chadgard and Scully haven’t played from the start. We could be a lot more certain. Moore, for that reason is a safer pick, but with arguably less potential upside. Risk v reward!
        Good luck!

PS If you’re gonna have $$s in the bank, this week more than any other is the time to do it. It’ll appreciate close to 5% in one week! Significantly more than any other week, but don’t leave it there for too long that’s all. Enjoy spending it on your first upgrade 🙂

        1

        0
        1. AllSaints, I’m curious about this comment you made:

“PS If you’re gonna have $$s in the bank, this week more than any other is the time to do it. It’ll appreciate close to 5% in one week!”

I’ve never considered this / ran the numbers but is this due to the contraction with the available points / money (i.e., how premium scores decrease even if they match their previous year’s output)?

          0

          0
          1. Father Dougal explains it well here: http://supercoachtalk.com/price-drops-visible-hidden-and-irrelevant/

In short, it’s because of the multiplier, which has the effect of pushing (nominal) prices down as the season goes on. As Father Dougal explains, however, these price drops are actually just an illusion, because the deflationary effect of the multiplier is felt uniformly across the board. There are, however, two things that the multiplier doesn’t touch: the prices of players who are yet to play three games, and cash in the bank. It’s the latter bit that Allsaints is referring to: because the money you have in the bank stays the same while the price-level of everything that can be bought with that money falls, you can think of said money as effectively gaining interest over time.

            2

            0
            1. I read through your explanation and FD’s post – makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, I don’t see a tonne of room for exploiting that quirk as leaving too much money in the bank means you’re probably sacrificing points on field.

              1

              0
              1. More often than not, yes. But as Allsaints said, this week you could earn nearly 5 percent, so if you have any expensive but underperforming players you could trade in for cash, now would be the time to do it.

                0

                0
                1. Makes sense but I think my under-performers will come good over the next 2-3 weeks (Yeo and Heeney). Although I do need to do something with Lobb (he was a place-holder for structure and I basically didn’t look at my team between JLT-1 and 2, which means I’m using trades to fix rookie issues).

  24. I need Parker, but I’m not sure who to trade out.
I don’t have Balta and I’m happy enough with the other rookies. I do have Dusty & Heeney. I also have 30 trades left.
Should I trade Dusty – Parker and consider upgrading Heeney to any MID/FWD (Neale/Fyfe/Macrae/Kelly)? Or just bite the bullet and miss out on Parker and keep the trades?
    TU: Get him
    TD: Miss out
Comment: Trade someone like Gibbons for Parker

  25. Need some advice please, original team always included Grundy & Libba but at the last week went with Merret & Goldy. Feel I made a mistake & should I correct this week b4 the price changes? Curently have $19500 & all the main rookies minus Drew & 30 trades. Scored 2312 last rd.

  26. Really wanting to get rid of heeny, got an extra 50 k in my bank thinking of going
    Heeney > Libba
    Butters > Rocky
Or to hold onto Heeney hoping that he fires up..?

  27. Opinions would be handy, I don’t have any rookie correction trades needed. Don’t have LDU though.

    Haven’t used any trades yet.

    Dusty/heeney out

    Llyod/t.kelly in

    TU – do it
    TD – stupid

Or just drop dusty and bring in LDU and have coin for upgrades

  28. Hmm … interested in opinions on a couple of things.

The Mills experiment didn’t seem to work, so looking to bring in (via Moore) either Worpel or Dahlhaus. I’m leaning toward the latter … Any strong thoughts one way or other?

Secondly, went with Goldy over Gawn. Is a straight swap to Mumford worth consideration?

(And BTW, am keeping an eye on Marshall who seems to have carried on his JLT form, and could be value if he keeps the ruck spot despite Longer being back. Or I could be off the mark!)

    Thanks!

  29. Ridley to scrimshaw allows watson to udl. Team now set and in the hands of the injury gods and selection. These two go up by over 250k in three weeks….eay more than any loss from holding dusty and heeney.
