Dumb & Dumber – May 2017

Written by Schwarzwalder on May 10 2017

How could I have been so stupid?………How many times have you asked yourself this question already during the Supercoach season? This is the thread made especially to vent your frustrations to the SCT Coaches.

Rookie selections have been tough on everyone but it’s the basic mistakes that we always fall for.ย  The discounted players are usually discounted for a reason.ย  Yet we continue to take the chance on them…….why?

I pledge to keep the following rule for next year: ‘Don’t pick the Daisies!’ย  Remember Daisy Thomas after he crossed over from Collingwood?ย  $310k and ‘bound to get to $500k in no time’…….no, just….no……. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  Players like O’Meara around that price that are returning from long injury lay-offs……they’re simply traps!ย  If I ever pick another Daisy, I’ll fly you all out to Germany to destroy my laptop, smartphone & tablet ๐Ÿ˜‰

So what’s held you back this year?ย  Which bonehead moves didn’t pay off?ย  Were you trying to be smarter than the rest?ย  Now you just look……dumb?ย  Get it off your chest here………..

  1. starting with shaw instead of Doch / taylor adams because I thought Doch would drop in price / adams would get injured.

Listening to everyone when they said not to start with Bont because he was carrying an injury and would start the season slow. I still havent found the funds to get him in ๐Ÿ™

  2. Good lord Schwarz, where to start…
    * Going from Grundy-Sandi-Witts, to Gawn-Sandi-Strnadica half an hour before the opening bounce. Compounded that by replacing Gawn with Grundy, even though I knew Mason Cox was a very good chance of being selected soon
    * My so-called premium midfield has lost about half a million bucks in value so far, and has a combined break-even this week of about 700. Had Sloane all pre-season until the broken face. Had Bont all pre-season too.
    * Trading out Riewoldt, although that doesn’t seem quite so bad now
    * Traded out Roughy for Balic last Sunday – Roughy tonned up, Balic spudded up
    * Just rookies in general – started with Florent, Mountford, Hibberd, Joel Smith and Pickett, even though I knew they’d be crap scorers, because of supposed job security. Picked Fisher and Parsons instead of Hardwick and Black for the same reason. Here’s an idea – if a player is scoring well, he probably has good job security Chillo, you buffoon. Oh and Kayne Turner – stay right the hell away from me.

All that adds up to a ranking I’m too embarrassed to state publicly. On the upside, I held on to Taranto, started with Doc, Laird and Dahlhaus, and Otten, Hampton and Butler have all done their jobs so far. Oh, and I avoided the JOM-Swallow trap.

  3. Got Swallow on the bubble only for him to score 48 and 55 before being rested. Trade him out and he comes back with a 96.

  4. A trade I really mucked up was a rookie correctional on McCarthy. Should have known that he wouldn’t score 20’s and 30’s every week.
Starting with omeara was a risk that didn’t pay off.

  5. Tossing up whether to trade Parfitt or Pickett. Chose Parfitt who tonned up next game.
Who will I keep, Marchbank or Hampton. Chose Hampton and watched Marchbank score a ton.
Picked Higgins over Franklin last week because he suited my bye structure better.

  6. Had Sandi Witts up until a couple days before the start of the season but switched to Gawn and so removed Nank from my forward line as I wouldnt need cover.
Also looking back picking Howe over Adams, Treloar over Pendles, Shaw over Doc and just a lot of drafts with much better mids such as Bont, Neale, Selwood and Sloane.

Starting with Titch has just about been my only move that wasnt dumb or dumber.

  7. Not sure you guys should beat yourselves up over dumb rookie choices this year – it hasn’t been easy picking good consisent ones and I reckon there’s a lot of us in the same boat.

My dumb mistake (although I still can’t come to grips with the fact I would have actually comitted it) was not having the “E” on Sandi in round 3 after Lukeholing. Given that extra 103 points would put me in the top 500 and fifth in the race to the Blunnies!!!

  8. Well starting with Shaw and Howe over Doc and Adams was one of them (and am still trying to get them into my side, likely Adams will come in this week though). Swapping out Sloane and Bont for Treloar and Beams just before the first bounce was another to allow Nank for Gawn in the rucks. And starting with Swallow, O’Meara and Roughead thinking that they’d make quick money and not leak points.
Rookies aren’t the biggest mistake as everyone has had issues this year with them.

  9. Trading Roo round 1. Not having Otten. Probably about it. I can’t complain too much I’m having a decent year

  10. Got sick of Kayne Turner scoring 40’s each week and not generating cash, so downgraded him to Parsons last week.
    Turner scored a season-high of 86, while Parsons scored 19 ๐Ÿ™
Now I will miss out on about $50-60k of extra cash that Turner will generate.

  11. Starting will o’meara was a massive mistake just because others were suggesting it, I didn’t follow my gut.

Going with Goldy knowing that Preuss would impact his score but still going with him anyway.

Bringing in T. Smith from Melbourne a week early to get Yeo in the team for Smith to cop a blow to the ribs and get sidelined.

Currently Hibberd could be another one after his first week of 56 but Yeo was the same so wait another week before he becomes a failure

  12. Not starting with Nank or Witts.
Starting Gawn and then trading to Grundy.
Bringing in Hannan after one game.
Bringing in EVW and Parsons last week and starting them on field.

  13. T.Boyd instead of nank as dpp.so I could use 75k elsewhere.Biggest problem has been alleged mid premos. Treloar , jpk, fyfe. Also tom hickey in ruck, got that one completely wrong!

  14. Most of the changes I made to my team after my team reveal. I’d like to think I would have brought in T Mitchell still, and of course replaces the cows that were not named, but the rest, blargh. Never again will I let my imaginary friend make decisions for me team.

Oh, and taking time to post this when I am not 100% done with Cow Talk. Call me Mr. Easily Distracted.

  15. Traded in Treloar 2 weeks ago instead of Bont because… I’m not entirely shore. I was baited in by Treloar’s 150. Also on the upside I did start the year with Neale, Rocky, Doch, Dahl, Macrae, Buddy (eh), Touhy and Nank so not too bad overall.

  16. One glaring error was exiting Ryder (1 week suspension) for Jake Spencer. Ryder was bumbling about scoring insignificant 80s. My idea was some quick cash gen from Big Spence on the bench.

Big Spence injured himself in that match, and was still a week away from bubbling.

Big Spence is still on my bench as I’ve had more pressing trades to make since.

I’ll eventually switch him to Strndca, when opportunity knocks.

  17. Every year I make the same mistakes. This year was no different. Had Nank/Sandi/Witts combo changed to Rough/sandi/Gawn just before lockout. And I never bri g in a player before there third but bought in Spencer after 1 game….we saw how that went.

  18. Started with O’Meara, Swallow, Roughead, traded them all out,

Started with Simpson, traded him out after scores of 57 and 73.

Bought Spencer after R1, like a few others above.

With it looking like a bad crop of rookies I gambled on the midpricers, I’m not complaining though, as some of them worked, Zak Jones, Clayton Oliver, Tom Mitchell, Jack Steele, Sandi, Nank, and Zach Tuohy, I’m currently just inside top 10k

    1. He was my off-season secret. I created a spreadsheet which had the predicted prices of players the day after 2016 season ended so I could start tinkering with teams already ๐Ÿ˜›

I had him in then and he didn’t move. As he got more and more popular, I got more and more annoyed that my POD became less POD-ish.

Boy am I glad now though. Sinking down 25% of teams as opposed to mine and just a few others!

  19. Starting with Hanners over Bont.

Trading in Parsons over Black last week.

Heaps of others but these 2 stinging me the most right now.

  20. Forgetting the opening game was on thurday leaving me with 5 unplaying rookies and some spuds.
Managed to pull it back to a reasonable team around top 10% but only have 17 trades left :/ and last year i finished 6000 something in my first year!

  21. Not taking Andy Otten; either at the start or after Round 2 when I had Joel Smith sitting on the pine. I took Nic Newman the next week.

  22. All bloody pre-season I had Rocky & Murphy but I felt for some reason that Beames was a must have bargain but as I didn’t want two players from the same side in the midfield. I then went JPK.
I also have Swallow (still). I have traded in Yeo & Higgins early days (Higgins in T.Lynch out).
My rucks are Sandy & Martin (in for Gawn).
A recommendation for Supercoach next year. Do not open for trades until about Wednesday and that way it my prevent rage trading or its alternative- lust trading.
In other words less emotion more rational thought.

    1. I’m the opposite Shaggi. I like tonrage trade monday just to send a message to the under-performers then reverse trade on Wednesday.

I donโ€™t trade for real until as close to match day as possible.

  23. Rage trading Goldy to Grundy. Starting with Roughy.
Picking Bernie Vince over Laird/Adams. Should I go on..!!

  24. Picking injury prone players such as JOM and Beams thinking they would be good picks!

Getting scared off of sloane and bont becase of pre season injuries only to go and select JPK and Treloar.

Lastly, not having the guts to select SandiWitts

  25. Treloar over Pendles
    Parsons over Black
Going for higher rookies over budget in forward. Taranto and florent instead of butler and houston

  26. Investing $1.2mill in Parker and Treloar….

Making Fyfe (C) last week and copping 60 something.

Bringing in Touk Miller as a shark move in week 4 (what was I thinking) by trading out Shaw, the latter which I still don’t mind.

  27. I don’t like the name “Hibberd”. The rookie one has been useless (still in my 30). I brought the other one in last week with Parsons. Went from a career-high rank of 1,800 to somewhere near 8,000 with a 1,906. Just totally pissed off.

  28. 1/ Thinking Tom Boyd would have a break-out season after his heroics in the finals last year and starting him in my team.
2/ Trading Tom Boyd out to Parsons the week Boyd gets 105 and Parsons (on-field) gets 19.
3/ Persisting with Adam Treloar, because “trades are gold” despite him losing me 80k and the only midfielders of mine he is outscoring are my rookies.
4/ Picking Roughhead and O’Meara as money makers….

The season is still young, I’m sure I can still manage a few more dumb and dumbers….

  29. Put my faith in Jobe to bounce back into premium stratosphere. Won’t mention O’Meara, because most had him!

  30. Had N.Riewoldt and traded him out to cut my losses when he got injured. Also traded out Ottens last minute before team finalised as I had a policy of 3 players per team maximum and I already had the 2 Rory’s and Hampton. I now wish I kept Otten and dissed Hampton… oh well, you win some and lose some
