Enjoyed his best season of his career in both SC and non-SC aspects thanks to more time spent in the backline as a rebounding defender due to the Giants losing Z Williams for the regular season. With D Shiel’s departure and Z Williams’s return it will be very interesting to see if this has a positive or negative impact on his SC scoring as well as potential changes to the amount of time spent in the midfield or defence. 2018 was his 2nd successive season of averaging 95+ and he should be able to continue that trend in 2019.

Verdict: Strongly consider for D1-D2

  1. Hmmmm …. after tonights match and the commentators comments regarding him being a mr fixit … and playing all over the ground … I’m not so sure now.
Williams back into the role he held last year, Coniglio and Taranto stepping up … it may mean he sits in some sort of limbo land??? …

Anyone else watch tonight and any similar concerns??

    1. I’m with you on this one Macca. Pretty sure he was playing half forward at the start of the 4th.

      1. yes, he also started at HF as well … next week hopefully becomes a little clearer … but for me he is no longer a certainty to start …

    2. I think it’s just a good ol case of JLT experimentation, he’s too talented to not lock down a role in the midfield or off half-back in the regular season.

  2. I am with you on this Macca. GWS is having few players back, so some roles can change. I watched the game and he was all over the place instead of wing and rebounding def.
I had him as lock in D2 but I am not so sure anymore. I want to see JLT 2. Williams is definitely affecting his scoring.

  3. Locked in my D3 spot- IMO he’ll be playing same role as Gaff does for West Coast. Free roaming wingman, has endurance and elite skills and poise

    1. I was thinking the same thing Pistolia, but besides Gaff last year the wing isn’t historically a good SC position. Gaff averaged 30+ possessions, if Whitfield starts getting those numbers the tags will come which will make him an easy upgrade target. I can see him averaging about 100 again if playing the Gaff role, which does make him a good choice but if theres not much upside I’d rather pay full price for Lloyd/Laird who are highly likely to be in the top 3 defenders.

It’s only JLT1 so not judging too soon. Hopefully Williams plays JLT2 so we know what his role is.

  4. Thats the Issue Pistolia. Whitfield had the most TOG than all other GWS players during JLT1 and scored same as Williams with an injured ankle (the other foot) and half TOG. He may be the new Gaff, I liked his old role, so this change makes me too nervous. New rules, new position, He may still be a top 6 Def but I am going to move him to upgrade target. Lloyd, Laird, and one of Hurn/Sicily in D3 for me.

  5. Talk of collingwood mids taking points off each other, how about , kelly, cogs, ward, taranto, will they push whitfield in to a lesser role, especially with williams back?
He has been in my team since day one but will keep options open now!

    1. Ward and Cogs looked top shelf. Then Kelly didnt play so we dont know how it is going to affect Withfield and Taranto. He was a lock in. Few questions marks are emerging and we may be reading too much into it but Lloyd was doing what Lloyd does , same with Laird.
