Observations:

Averages 100+ against 7 teams (Adel, Bris, Coll, Geel, GC, Melb, WB) with 4 pre-bye and 4 post bye.

6.02 win/loss differential and 2018 was the only time in the past 3 seasons that he didn’t average 105+ in wins for the season.

1.14 post bye/pre-bye differential.

25+ differential when disposals equal/exceed 22.

With the wealth of options down back it seems unnecessary to select Hurley as his scoring is heavily dependent on accumulating cheap possessions down back and it’s unlikely that he returns to that role due to Essendon’s great post bye form when he was used more as a lock down defender.

Verdict: Irrelevant

  1. Have to agree. I married into a veritable fleet of Bombers; fans for generations and they all say the same thing … his back issues (since 2012) make his career all the more remarkable (especially 2015).
    Sad.
He really could have been one of the GOAT defenders.

Thanks Adam but it’s a NO from me, even though the Bombers could win a few more games this year and if he were to return to 105+ on WINs average, you could do a lot worse!

    1. Thanks All Saints. Along with S Pendlebury this was one of my hardest to decide on a verdict. Started and held him all last season but Essendon used M Hurley and B Goddard as their scapegoats for their poor 1st half to the season. Making them more accountable and decreasing the amount of cheap kicks seemed to coincide with the team’s turn in performance. With his dependency on amassing a large amount of the ball to score well and the new kick in rules it’s difficult to see him returning to a 95+ avg or even a 90+ avg.

  2. I traded Doedee to Hurley after the bye. Didn’t work at all haha. Would have saved a trade and got similar output. Hurley ended the year as D7 loophole – mostly as an emg
