Finals Runs

Did a little bit of work to assist you in making those all-important trade decisions as we count down to the end of the season. What I’ve looked at is the last 4 games of each team which as we all know is the SuperCoach finals. I’ve given each team a score based on where they sit on the ladder now, who they’re playing, and whether its away or at home.

Adelaide – Fremantle (H), Brisbane (A), Melbourne (A), Gold Coast (H)

A+  Four teams from outside the 8, Freo at home, and a GC GF

Players to consider: Scott Thompson, Patrick Dangerfield, Rory Sloane, Sam Jacobs, Kurt Tippett, Taylor Walker

Brisbane – Carlton (A), Adelaide (H), Port (A), Dogs (H)

A-  Three teams from outside the 8 and Adelaide at home

Players to consider: Tom Rockliff, Dayne Zorko, Ben Hudson, Simon Black, Jack Redden, Pearce Hanley, Jed Adcock

Carlton – Brisbane (H), Essendon (A), Gold Coast (A), St Kilda (H)

B+  Only travels once to play GC but two tough games against Top 8 teams

Players to consider: Marc Murphy, Chris Judd, Mitch Robinson, Heath Scotland, Andrew Carrazzo, Kade Simpson

Collingwood – Sydney (A), North (H), West Coast (A), Essendon (A)

B-  The North game is at Etihad so technically that’s an away game too but the Essendon one at home

Players to consider: Scott Pendlebury, Dane Swan, Steele Sidebottom, Dayne Beams, Heath Shaw, Travis Cloke

Essendon – North (H), Carlton (H), Richmond (A), Collingwood (H)

B+  No travel but all reasonably tough Victorian-based opponents

Players to consider: Jobe Watson, Brent Stanton, Paddy Ryder

Fremantle – Adelaide (A), Richmond (H), North (A), Melbourne (H)

A-  Tough first and third games but Melbourne in the GF

Players to consider: Matthew Pavlich, Michael Johnson, Jonathon Griffin (if Sandilands doesn’t come back), Michael Barlow, Aaron Sandilands (but make sure he’s right)

Geelong – West Coast (A), St Kilda (H), Dogs (H), Sydney (H)

A  The first game is a shocker but their last 3 at home including the PF & GF at Kardinia Park

Players to consider: Joel Selwood, Paul Chapman, Jimmy Bartel, Steve Johnson, Corey Enright, James Kelly, Tom Hawkins

Gold Coast – GWS (H), Hawthorn (A), Carlton (H), Adelaide (A)

C  The GWS game in the first week is good but will be punished by the rest

Players to consider: Gary Ablett, Harley Bennell, Danny Stanley, Sam Iles

Greater Wester Sydney – Gold Coast (A), Melbourne (H), St Kilda (A), North (H)

C+  Nice first 2 weeks but its gets hard from there

Players to consider: Callan Ward, Toby Greene

Hawthorn – Port (H), Gold Coast (H), Sydney (A), West Coast (H)

B+  Plenty of Hawks points in weeks 1 & 2 but Sydney away and WC in the GF isn’t optimal

Players to consider: Lance Franklin, Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis, Grant Birchall, Jarryd Roughead, Cyril Rioli, Matt Suckling, Brad Sewell, David Hale

Melbourne – St Kilda (A), GWS (A), Adelaide (H), Fremantle (A)

C-  GWS the only shining light and its away

Players to consider: Colin Sylvia, Nathan Jones, Stefan Martin

North Melbourne – Essendon (A), Collingwood (A), Fremantle (H), GWS (A)

A  Even tho the 1st 2 weeks are tough they’re at ES which the Roos love and a GWS GF

Players to consider: Andrew Swallow, Daniel Wells, Todd Goldstein, Brent Harvey, Leigh Adams, Drew Petrie, Nathan Grima

Port Adelaide – Hawthorn (A), West Coast (H), Brisbane (H), Richmond (A)

C  Week 3 the only one I give them any chance in

Players to consider: Kane Cornes, Travis Boak, Brad Ebert, Troy Chaplin

Richmond – Dogs (H), Fremantle (A), Essendon (H), Port (H)

B+  Like the first and last weeks of their Finals campaign

Players to consider: Brett Deledio, Trent Cotchin, Ivan Maric, Shane Tuck, Shaun Grigg, Dustin Martin, Chris Newman, Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt

St Kilda – Melbourne (H), Geelong (A), GWS (H), Carlton (A)

A  4 games in-state, 3 at ES, and Melbourne & GWS thrown in – great run

Players to consider: Nick Riewoldt, Nick Dal Santo, Lenny Hayes, Brendon Goddard, Sam Fisher, Leigh Montagna, Ben McEvoy, Jack Steven

Sydney – Collingwood (H), Dogs (A), Hawthorn (H), Geelong (A)

B-  Facing Geelong at SS in the GF a terrible draw. Hawks & Pies as well – ouch.

Players to consider: Kieran Jack, Adam Goodes, Josh Kennedy, Shane Mumford, Ryan O’Keefe

West Coast – Geelong (H), Port (A), Collingwood (H), Hawthorn (A)

B-  Another team facing Cats, Hawks & Pies in their last 3 with an away GF

Players to consider: Dean Cox, Matt Priddis, Nic Naitanui, Scott Selwood, Luke Shuey, Daniel Kerr, Shannon Hurn, Chris Masten

Western Bulldogs – Richmond (A), Sydney (H), Geelong (A), Brisbane (A)

C  No bottom 3 teams to play, 3 away games including the GF, and Geelong & Sydney

Players to consider: Matthew Boyd, Ryan Griffen, Daniel Cross, Brian Lake

So the teams I think have the best Finals runs are Adelaide, St Kilda, Geelong and North. Have I got it right? Let me know what you think.

  1. Great Write up Motts, generally Geelong rest a few before the finals, but thats highly unlikely in this case unless they dont make the finals !
Will they put the cue in the rack if they lose to Ess, Crows, and Haw ?
TU- Yes, they’ll get in early for the end of seasons op’s
    TD-They’ll see the season out.

  2. Great write up I agree. Food for thought considering the minimal trades people have left. Gotta laugh at ‘players to consider’ Travis Cloke?! If
I had trades spare he be long gone.

Players not to consider – BROUGHTON!!

  3. Brilliant write up Motts. Guess I kinda over looked Sydney’s finals draw when I brought in Goodes last week. Considering he averaged 115.67 across the games he played against Collingwood, Bulldogs, Hawthorn & Geelong last season, I don’t think it’ll matter too much.

  4. I’m very wary of trading in blokes from teams that have sewn up a top four spot in the last four weeks and are playing donkey teams – Superstar players being ‘rested’ in the lead up to finals is the bane of my supercoach life!
Prefer to pick blokes in teams battling for a finals berth or top four.

  5. Not sure a top 4 position will be decided on for some time yet, interstate teams dominating three our of the four positions at this stage with percentage being crucial, possibly Coll v GWS but even then they are in desperate need of so percentage boost, it’s tight at the top at the moment

  6. Have Giles and I.Mullet in at the moment, will make finals and am fortunate enough to have 500k up my sleeve. I would like to upgrade Giles to a premium but am unsure who, feedback would be much appreciated.

Thumbs up – Giles to Cox (Historically a huge scorer)
    or
Thumbs down – Giles to Jacobs (Great run home + good form)

  7. Need 1 more Premo mid to finish my side next week

Thumbs UP – Marc Murphy (approx $440,000)
Thumbs DOWN – Dane Swan (approx $605,000)

    Thanks 🙂

  8. Who out of these options should i take:
Kerr, Murphy, Dal Santo, Barlow, Sylvia, Grigg
    Enright, Scotland, Hurn
Fisher, Yarran, Rance or save a trade and keep S.Shaw on the field,
    i have 5 trades left.

  9. Last year I loaded up on Hawthorn players, knowing that they played GC in the grand final week. Then Clarko rested half the team and i lost by 27 points! So this year i’m not risking it with any Crows or Kangaroos in my team. Although the difference this year is that percentage could play a massive part in the top 4 make-up so coaches may be less inclined to rest players.
