Flavour Of The Week – Rd 6

Written by Chillo on April 23 2019

I hope you’re enjoying the intermission during this fantastic festival of footy. We’re midway through this ten day fiesta, and by now you will probably be thinking about your first upgrades. Break-evens are of vital importance at this time of year, so keep a close eye on the linked page. Don’t forget that due to the short break between rounds, you may have less than 32 hours from now to make that vital trade!

(Please accept my apologies for the brevity of this post. I had to catch an early plane home from my Easter break this morning!)

Here are the most popular trade targets, as of 12pm, Tuesday April 23:

1.      Liam Baker (RIC, fwd, $162 800)

Plus:

+ Two very composed games from the Tigers’ small forward, who has worked his way up to the wing to receive the ball on several occasions. Efficient use of the footy see Baker averaging 87 and boasting a break-even of -84 this week.

+ The latest mulleted Tiger managed three games as a forward pocket last year, but is thriving under the extra responsibility given to him in 2019 in the absence of some of Richmond’s more established stars.

Minus:

– Does Baker stay in the 22 when the likes of Jack Riewoldt and Mav Weller return from injury?

2.     Jack Ross (RIC, mid, $117 300)

+ A very solid effort in his second game for the big-bodied rookie mid, compiling 17 possessions for his 57 points. Now on the bubble with a break-even of -76, Ross looks to be the standout choice for a mid downgrade this week.

+ 40% of Ross’ disposals have been contested in the first two games of his career. Jack loves the contested ball, Supercoach loves Jack.

Minus:

– Seems likely that he will be a straight swap for Captain Cotch when he returns very shortly from injury. Any chance Ross can hold his spot, Tigers fans?

3.      Tim Kelly (GEE, mid/fwd, $491 000)

Plus:

+ After turning in the worst performance of his short but stellar career against the Giants, Kelly bounced right back with a terrific effort against the undermanned Hawks. 29 touches, two goals and 129 points, just missing his sizeable break-even.

+ Seems a lock for a top 8 forward this season, has a very manageable break-even of 115 this week, at the cheapest price he’s been all year. If you don’t have him, it’s hard to imagine a better time to strike.

Minus:

– Scored 39 a week ago, with six clangers from only 9 disposals. Can you trust him not to produce another dirtbag of an effort like that in the near future? And with that break-even, you could probably wait one more week.

4.      Jackson Hately (GWS, mid, $148 800)

Plus:

+ Despite the Giant’s upset loss to the Dockers in Canberra, the highly rated Hately could barely have been more impressive on debut. 22 disposals (10 contested) at 81% efficiency for 95 points.

+ With Cal Ward gone for the season, it seems that the vacant midfield spot is Hately’s for as long as he can manage it. Prior to last weekend, NEAFL form has been excellent from pick 14 in last year’s draft, and prior to that, he had a very promising JLT series.

Minus:

– Josh. Bloody. Glenn!

5.  Marty Hore (MEL, def, $194 800)

Plus:

+ Saturday afternoon was the type of performance that patient owners were waiting for from Marty Hore. Floating across halfback, Hore amassed 13 marks and 20 possessions, capably distributing out of defence for his 96 points.

+ With Neville Jetta confirmed out for up to 8 weeks, job security just became a whole lot better for Marty.

Minus:

– Has burst his bubble now, and will cost you $77K more than he did last week. Are there better options around for cash-building?

#6 – 10: Michael WALTERS (FRE), Josh ROTHAM (WCE), Jake LLOYD (SYD), Adam TRELOAR (COL), Will HAYES (WBD)

Most traded OUT players this week: Matthew PARKER (STK), Dom SHEED (WCE), Sam COLLINS (GCS), Jordan CLARK (GEE), Zak BUTTERS (PTA), Christopher BURGESS (GCS), James COUSINS (HAW), Will SETTERFIELD (CAR), Connor ROZEE (PTA), Bailey SCOTT (NTH)

    1. More news/stats about Ross.
Top 3 CBA’s at Richmond since Rnd 4 – Prestia and Ross with 47 and Higgins 28.

  1. I have Burgess stuck on my Def bench (no other rookie Def DPP’s in my squad) Anyone got any creative ways I could offload him?
    cheers

    1. Hey Simo. If you have Moore in your fwd line, you could swing him back there and get Baker.
Otherwise, Jay Lockhart (102K def/mid) is a chance to be named tonight and is on the bubble.

    2. Same position as you, my thoughts were to hold him and hope for just a big game or at least hold his BE every week until an option arises, or go to Rotham and just hope he gets named in the near future for his 3rd game

      1. Thanks NatoP. I’m an Eagles member, Rotham only played his 2nd game as a late call up for Jetta, then was dropped for the PAP game. I think Rotham’s JS is pretty slim.

        1. Eagles have gone well with injuries so far this year, so just 1 in the backline could open up so much potential and with a big loss last week, for all we know Simpson just goes berserk and drops players. It’s quite doubtful but all we need is 4-5 more games out of Rotham. A lot can happen in a week of footy

          1. I think Rotham will be handy for a a late-season downgrade. Theres every chance he plays 4-5 games between now and late in the season, so he could be used for a bit extra cash at that point.

  2. Great work Chillo!

Simo Lockhart Demons $102,400 Def/Mid could be an option if he is named tonight after playing 2 games, but he is only averaging 44.5pts.

  3. Going to be tough this week, potentially three bubble boys named tonight (Ross, Baker, Lockhart) and I really only want to make the one trade incase some carnage happens or a selection suprise later in the week (eg. Dunkley) and I need to use it then.

Will try use both trades this week to upgrade or make cash but its just a matter of when

  4. I upgraded nanks to grundy, but I’m planning on sitting tight for round 6 and 7 barring injuries and start upgrading again in round 8.

Is that leaving it too late? The cash cows will be good and fat by then.

    1. Perhaps, Nateo. Schofield and Jetta are both already in and when Rioli comes back it will be at the expense of someone up forward (Vardy, Petruccelle or Allen).

If named, I think I’ll bring him in.

  5. Is it worth bringing Kelly in if my forward line consists of Danger, Heeney and Menegola? All four would share the same bye. Although I mostly play for league, I could just say Rd13 is a writeoff and go for it.
Otherwise I’ll probably bring in either Daniel or Walters.

    1. If going for overall, I would advise against it, but if playing for leagues then not a problem.

  6. apologies for the rant in advance, but am I the only one who can’t stand all the golfing terminology that AFL commentators use now (one-wood, mulligan, etc)

Its being flogged to death and hurts my ears and brain (I’m looking at you in particular Paul Roos and Jonathan Brown)

    1. Just not consistent enough at the moment, for every 90-105 score he’ll chuck up a 60. Maybe in a year or two though!

  8. Don’t give us options Chillo! With your ranking at the moment, just give us exactly what you’ve done and a time machine to go back five weeks and replicate it!

  9. None of my young players have fully finished earning money, but I want Tim Kelly in, and his current price is tempting. Should I just wait a few more weeks, or get him in early at the loss of cash generation?
    TU: Give it time
    TD: Get Kelly in now

  10. TU
    Clark > Baker
    Butters > Ross

    TD
    Clark > Lockhart
    Butters > baker

Than next week moore up to laird and Scott down to hatley
