Game Chat – Geelong vs Hawthorn

Written by Father Dougal on April 22 2019

Where and when: MCG, Monday April 22, 3.20pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 21, 2018: Hawthorn 10.11 (71) d. Geelong 8.12 (60)

After leading by 26 points at three-quarter time, Hawthorn was forced to withstand a late Geelong comeback at the MCG. The Cats got within six points with seconds remaining, before Jaeger O’Meara sealed victory with a goal in the 30th minute.

What it means for Hawthorn: It’s been an indifferent start to the year. Victory – and a big scalp – on Easter Monday will make the Hawks a genuine finals contender.

What it means for Geelong: After a flying start to the year, last week’s defeat to the Giants was a setback. Winning here will get the Cats back on track.

How Hawthorn wins: With O’Meara. Its midfield is simply too light on talent to cope without him, Tom Mitchell, Liam Shiels and Shaun Burgoyne.

How Geelong wins: By dominating out of the middle. Patrick Dangerfield, Tim Kelly and Joel Selwood have the chance to completely overwhelm a depleted Hawks onball group.

The stat: Four of the last five games between these two sides have been decided by fewer than 11 points.

The match-up: Tom Stewart v Luke Breust
One of the game’s most in-form defenders against one of the League’s best small forwards. Stewart has started the season brilliantly, while Breust will act as Hawthorn’s biggest threat having kicked eight goals to open the year.

It’s a big week for: Jaeger O’Meara (Hawthorn)
All eyes will be on one man at Hawthorn ahead of this Easter Monday clash. O’Meara missed the Hawks’ last game with St Kilda due to a hip complaint. Without him, Hawthorn’s midfield looks mightily lean. All of the attention this week will be on whether he gets up for the Cats.

Father Dougals’s Tip: Geelong by 6. The Cats are having a better year, Hawks still miss Titch.

  1. Hope Danger goes big. I’m playing leagues so have the choice of taking Gawn’s score who I put the Vc on,which I’m thinking is not enough, or captaining danger . Leaning towards the latter as I’m currently 26 in front but opponent has Kelly and Atkins to play. Tu- Gawn Td- danger. Cheers

  2. What does Stratton our mean for Scrimshaw? More of an accountable defensive tall role?

    TU – field Scrimshaw
    TD – field Jordan Clark

  5. How do people rate Ricky anderson? 3 tons back to back, is seeing a lot of footy and going strong.
TU : He is the main benefitor of Titch out, get him
TD: Will plateau soon. Not SC relevant.

  6. Jeannot.

Henderson is having a classic ” Purple Patch”

He has never put up these sort numbers, and may never again.

As a Mid only, there’s probably 40 other guys more likely to average 110+ for a full season.

If Henderson finishes top 20 mids for the year….

Santa is a real and Trump is not a knob!

    1. Not sure. I know I put the captaincy on him. They’re playing him out of the goal square which is great for geelong less than optimal for my supercoach team.

      1. yep – really shi##ing me again how much they waste him up forward … absolute joke. Scott is a flog. Why even both naming him every week in centre mid, then park him up front?

Going to really hurt me this week … have the C on him, up against Thommo in the Contribs league and need him to get 120 … damn!

  7. Hendo has taken a while to settle in @ the hawks
Put up the odd big numbers until last year when he posted a few
This year looks to have settled , looks like he is one of the leaders & is playing to his potential
Lookn fwd to next year , with a bit of luck re injuries not holding him or the hawks back , recon he might just be in for a very good season

    1. Wighty, I wanted to cull Hore, he came back strong, I wanted to cull Gibbons, he responded with a ton , Drew the same,…. I reckon our cows this year will be up and down and we have to learn to live with it. Not worth the trade unless the incoming rookie is smoking

      1. Good advice Jeannot.

Always read Father Dougal’s “Cow Talk” ,and study those stats before culling any Cows.

Hope your doing well this week. 🙂

      2. Sound advice. I started with hore and he was onfield this week. Traded gibbons for stack so not so bad. I’m looking more at LDU/Parker/Scrimshaw/Cousins types who are nice and fat, but as you say…gotta find a nice calf to replace. LDU to ross looks like my one trade.

      1. Nice one. Needed Kelly to score less than 140 to win and looking at the stat line was starting to get a bit nervous!
