Game Chat – Adelaide v West Coast

Written by Thommo on May 25 2019

Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Saturday, May 25, 4.05pm ACST

Last time they met: Adelaide Oval, round 15, 2018: Adelaide 12.16 (88) beat West Coast 12.6 (78)

The Crows came from 27 points down in the third quarter, booting six consecutive goals to stun the Eagles. Co-captain Taylor Walker led the way brilliantly with three second-half goals, while Rory Laird and Matt Crouch had big games.

What it means for Adelaide: The Crows (seventh, 5-4) will be looking to bounce back after last weekend’s nail-biting one-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba.

What it means for West Coast: The reigning premiers (sixth, 6-3) are aiming for their fourth straight victory, which could put them inside the top four by the end of the round.

How Adelaide wins: The Crows need to improve their forward pressure and lock the ball inside their attacking half of the ground. They also can’t kick long and high into the forward line and allow the Eagles’ defenders to pick them off with ease.

How West Coast wins: Expose the Crows with their pace on the outside. Small forwards Willie Rioli, Liam Ryan and Jack Petruccelle all have the leg speed to trouble the Crows’ defenders.

The stat: The Eagles don’t have any fears about playing at Adelaide Oval, having won seven of their nine games at the venue. They are 2-2 against the Crows at the ground in four meetings.

The match-up: Daniel Talia v Josh Kennedy

The experienced Crows defender will have another tough challenge, going up against one of the premier key forwards in the competition. Talia is the highest-ranked key defender at the Crows in the Official AFL Player Ratings, and 156th overall, while Kennedy – coming off four goals against Melbourne last weekend – is the second-highest ranked key forward at the Eagles, behind Jack Darling, and 177th overall.

It’s a big week for: Taylor Walker

The Crows co-captain needs one goal to reach 400 goals for his career. He’s second on the club’s all-time goalkicking list, behind only mercurial high-flyer Tony Modra on 440.

Thommos’s Tip: Crows by 6 points.

  1. We usually do well in Adelaide. Get it done, Eagles.

Also, Hurn, would be great if you could carry us again.

  2. Anyone know why west coast aren’t wearing their indigenous jersey? Seems like a bad look for the game

    1. The dominant colour of the WCE Indigenous Gurnsey is blue… the same as their Home uniform. So they wore theirs last week, and are wearing their away Gurnsey today to provide enough contrast against the Adelaide one.

        1. Keep up the good work Lisa. Only a double posting as the website doesn’t make your post public for about 5 mins. No way you could have known it was done 2 mins before yours

    1. he’s still out there Chips … but I would really appreciate someone giving Smith and big effing hurry up!!

Lot of so called premos not scoring that well thus far … traded in Boak and he looked buggered most of the game … might have been a bad trade – maybe his tank not the greatest for full time mid?? Anyone got any thoughts??

      1. Bye coming up. If he keeps the role he’ll still be top3 you’d think.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Robbie Gray giving him the occasional chop-out does his output some good. Would like to get him on his bye.

Hoping to double-down next week … carnage aside!!

  6. Can’t see O’Brien losing his spot, but then again it’s not NicNat.

Anyone else think Elliot YEO is fast approaching must-have status.
    – s well has his 17 disposals, he’s had 11 tackles, four clearances and two inside-50s.

    1. yeah mate – if not for the outs in my forwards this week, he would have come in … had him last year, kicking myself for not starting him this year

      1. I started with him and he had me worried the first few weeks with some low scores. Glad I kept the faith though.

  8. see that red thing Brodie? Its called a footy … you’re supposed to go and get it and catch it and kick it … FFS!!

      1. He’s never averaged over 100 before, and is generally in the 80s. Seems to be the one major SC beneficiary of the new kick in rules. He’s also going against Father Dougals projections of peaking in his thirteenth season! Well done if you started him.

        1. I had him penciled in after the rule changes came in but couldn’t keep him in my initial team because of the mids I targeted.
