Game Chat – Adelaide vs Collingwood

Written by Thommo on April 13 2018

Venue: Adelaide Oval at 7:20 ACST

R19, 2017, Collingwood 15.13 (103) drew with Adelaide 16.7 (103) at the MCG
R17, 2016, Adelaide 14.13 (97) d Collingwood 10.9 (69) at Adelaide Oval
R2, 2015, Adelaide 12.18 (90) d Collingwood 9.9 (63) at Etihad Stadium
R18, 2014, Adelaide 14.14 (98) d Collingwood 12.10 (82) at the MCG
R9, 2014, Adelaide 10.16 (76) d Collingwood 7.13 (55) at Adelaide Oval

Two last-start winners face off at Adelaide Oval under the Friday night lights. For Collingwood to have any chance of an upset victory they are going to have to slow down Adelaide’s slick ball movement. Half-back flanker Rory Laird is getting leather poisoning, Bryce Gibbs and Rory Sloane are leading the midfield and link-up forward Tom Lynch is a welcome return after missing the first two games of the season. The ruck battle between Sam Jacobs and Magpies big man Brodie Grundy will be one to savour. The Magpies tagged Sloane last year, but with Levi Greenwood out with a knee injury, it will be interesting to see who gets the job, or if they go head to head. Adam Treloar, Travis Varcoe and Magpies bad-boy Dd Goey could both spend time in attack as the Magpies change things up and go away from a conventional forward set-up. They’ll need something special to beat the Crows for the first time in five years.

Thommo’s Tip:  Adelaide by 25 points

    1. The conditions only help the pies scrappy style of play as opposed to the crows slick ball movement. Don’t expect the pies to win but they’ll go close!!

      1. Don’t get me wrong, I’m going for Collingwood. Hate the Crows – lol. Seems Collingwood have started really well. Hope they keep it up.

    1. Just polling the Thursday/ Friday nights because they determine the margin in tipping comps. For the record the polls are running 3 and 0 if you’d used them to tip Friday/Thursday games. Smart crowd here!

  1. Jordan De Goey has somehow managed to sneak into my team this week for Rory Lobb. An absolute boom-or-bust selection, but his stats from last year line up to players (such as Josh Kelly, Matt Crouch, even Paddy Dangerfield) in their pre-breakout years. In the last year of his contract, the kid has natural talent and is a game-breaker, and needs to make the most of his opportunities (plus he’s just about the biggest POD you’re gonna see in serious teams). Clearly, however, he’s had a few previous injury issues, and it remains to be seen if he can move on from his moronic ways, to become the star we all know he can be. Fingers crossed I’ve got this one right!

    1. Thats one ballsy move EatChickenNuggets

I did consider it myself desperate to make the SCT Cup!

10 spots left for those yet to qualify.

I’ve got the V/C on Buddy ,and have traded in Nic Nat as my last ditch effort.

Praying for a HUGE one this week!

      1. Wanted De Goey all pre season and he stayed in my team through his doofus phase until he twanged his hammy. If he hits a ton tonight I’ll find him very hard to not bring in.

    2. Agree there mate he is a powerful unit, ready to smash the Croweaters was my comment last night on Ploughs article where he predicts, Pies top 8 but Cats no milk….

      1. In my side next week (or his bubble) if Bonner fails this week or maybe 1 more to get JDG. Last year he had 30 odd and 3g from mid/hff

    1. Who did you go? I loopholed Steph but it would mean holding the Ryan to Henry trade, not sure if that’s a good idea…

    1. Is Murphy’s injury that bad? Possible late in? I’m tipping a low scoring scrappy affair, unfortunately I think Collingwood could cause an upset tonight. Hope I’m wrong

    2. Kane Cornes said on radio earlier that he had it on ‘pretty good authority’ that Tex Walker would be a late out!

    1. So, I’d been unsure about Kreuzer since he was a late out round 2 (big man + groin injury = bad news) so I watched some highlights from the Blues-Pies last night. Grundy looked a cut above Kreuzer, so I decided to pull the trigger.

It goes against the SC rulebook but I was listening to my gut on it more than anything else – hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite me in the @ss. It helped that I hadn’t used a trade to that point (although I do have to move Ryan on this week) – 28 trades at round 4 is better than usual…

  4. What do people think of Pendles this year? I was really close to starting with him but there were too many other mid premo options. Up until the half way point of last season he was considered a supercoach lock, is there any chance he gets back to that?

    1. I think he’s in SC decline. If he drops in value, may well be worth picking up as a fallen premium, but his best is more than likely behind him.

However, you never know if they’re carrying an injury or not.

    2. Ahh Pendles will be this years Cotch if Pies keep playing like they have their last 2…

Pendles playing run with role, should avg 28 to 30disp 5tackles, he is a fit unit. Has played with niggles his whole career as most footballers live with, but looks like he got a good run at it this year. Less pressure on him now he has two wins in impressive fashion. With sidey, treloar, lifting their workrates and what they had been working on pre season starting to gel/cohesion Pendles is a solid bet.

Always effecient thats his SC crux, rarely out of a game pretty dependable 30d every week. That may drop but i think he is just reasserting his feet, picking up the pace.

      1. plays well in good teams Pendles, Swanny and him were genius, i think he looks strong, like Fyfe a bit thicker, will mature like Sam Mitchell as he loses pace he will find time through hesitations and his silkyness thru traffic….

      1. I like it!

I hope its a girl if we have a 3rd one, cuz our daughter Magpie (we call her Maggie) really want’s a sister.

        I reckon Murray’s a good name for a girl.

  5. Dunno about anyone else but I’ve already loopholed Stephenson for Brayshaw… super effort for his 4th game

  6. I benches stephenson in the tech league team. ahhhhhh.

Kids got some serious talent and his pace his electrifying!

How good is Rory Laird! Has to be my favourite player in the comp from a team other than my own. Just gets the job done week in week out.

Murray putting in a shift again. Bloody hope the MRP don’t do something stupid and look at that bump on Mcgovern that shouldn’t of even been a free.

    1. The gap between the elite rucks and the rest appears massive this year. Will be interesting to see how Grundy goes against the likes of Gawn who has dominated his opponents so far this year. Wouldn’t be locking him in as 120+ ave just yet even though he looks capable of it.

      1. Agree but his groundwork is increasingly impressive, albeit Adelaide midfield was woeful last night.
Nank to Grundy thru the byes for me at this point, tho if Paddywack’s back …

  9. Firstly….*#&%! I’m in a $50 comp where we tip 1 game a week, knock out style. 50 people in the comp and we started last week….45 of us tipped the Crows….there goes $50…

Secondly decided to bench Stephenson for the first time. Swung him into the middle and put the E onto him. Was Planning of Kelly to Fyfe/McRae…not any more. Well done Steph. Nearly traded you this week

  10. You know, I actually dreamt about picking Grundy in Perfect 9 last night… it was one of the first things that popped into my head after I woke up. Then I looked at the numbers, and decided against it.

I think next time I dream about picking a player, I’m just going to run with it.
