Game Chat – Brisbane v Hawthorn

Written by Thommo on June 1 2019

Where and when: the Gabba, Saturday, June 1, 7.25pm AEST

Last time they met: University of Tasmania Stadium, round 17, 2018: Brisbane 15.8 (98) d Hawthorn 9.11 (65).

The Lions made it three straight wins by stunning the finals-bound Hawks. After trailing by 11 points at half-time, Brisbane ran the legs off their more experienced rivals, kicking the final six goals of the game to run out easy winners. Eric Hipwood and Cam Rayner booted three goals apiece, while Dayne Beams tallied 33 disposals.

What it means for Brisbane: The classic ‘eight-point game’, a win would solidify the Lions’ top-eight position after a heartbreaking loss to Fremantle on Sunday. Brisbane has won four from five at the Gabba and wants to continue making its home ground one of the most difficult trips in the competition.

What it means for Hawthorn: Currently ninth, a win keeps the Hawks right in the finals race. After beating Port Adelaide at the weekend, another victory would make it back-to-back wins over teams they’re likely to be battling with come the final five rounds of the season.

How Brisbane wins: It’s becoming more apparent the Lions’ best is good enough – but they need to do it for the entirety of matches. One bad quarter against the Bulldogs and a 10-minute possession avalanche from Fremantle has cost them twice in the past three weeks. Win the contested ball and they’ll win the game.

How Hawthorn wins: After being badly beaten twice last season, the Hawks will need to cut off Brisbane’s switches of play and swift ball movement. Opponents have shown the Lions can be frustrated and can struggle to score if they’re slowed down. It’s a patience game for Hawthorn.

The stat: Dayne Zorko is leading the AFL in four statistical categories: goal assists (13), pressure acts (282), tackles inside 50 (22) and inside 50s (70). He is second in tackles (74).

The match-up: Ricky Henderson v Hugh McCluggage

This pair are two of the hottest wingmen in the competition. Henderson, at 30, is fresh off 37 disposals against Port Adelaide and is having arguably the best season of his career. McCluggage, in his third year, is showing all the poise and class that got him drafted at No.3, averaging 23 touches and kicking 12 goals.

It’s a big week for: Alastair Clarkson

The master coach will have vivid memories of being outplayed twice last season. He’ll have been scheming for longer than seven days to get one back over his old mate Chris Fagan.

Thommo’s Tip: Hawthorn by -20 points.

  1. VC on Kelly, intended to switch Hinge and Hore for the loophole. Just realized that I already have the E on Burgess meaning I’d have to bench Hore to get Kelly’s VC.

So, should I just roll the dice on C Gawn?

  3. I own Neale – but fair dinkum this CD scoring it absolute BS!!! His last three possessions, he didnt dispose of any of them correctly – the last one was a turnover and cost a goal – yet his score kept going up and his DE stayed the same … absolute garbage!!

    1. Give it a few minutes and see if it goes back down. The live scores on FanFooty/Footywire tend to be a few minutes behind – perhaps the points you saw being added were for something he did earlier?

      1. nah mate it hasn’t changed – he’s still on same score (61) and same DE (87) … I’ve said it many times and this year for the first time I have fox and am watching many games closely with live scores in front of me … I even check replays at times … the scoring on certain players is absolutely BS at times …

  4. Yeh
The scorers are just human like the rest of us
CD have their competent & incompetent workers
    Favourites & dislikes players
Scoring anomalies are unavoidable in fantasy footy

    1. Technically they don’t have ‘scorers’, just stats-keepers. But yes, some calls – such as whether something is contested, effective, etc. – have some grey area, so some inconsistency is perhaps to be expected.

But I do have to agree with Macca: there’s nothing subjective about a turnover that costs a goal.

    1. Hmm… he was going to be my last backline upgrade in round 13. I guess I’ll have to find someone else.

        1. Wrong bye round, unfortunately. Apart from Luke Ryan, who I already have, Sicily was easily the best round-12er, so that’s thrown a spanner in the works.

Not to worry, I’ll work something out.

      1. If you have the cash Jack – I’d go Hurn … and hope he drops a little after his bye … looking at your side, that’s a good backline!

        1. you still have the good rookies who can help cover as long as you don’t need their cash for upgrades on the other lines?? …

        2. Thanks!

I’d love to go Hurn. It’s just that bloody round 13 bye… warm bodies are a precious commodity that week. Depending on how things play out with Sloane + Whitfield’s injuries, Sicily’s report, etc., I may have to sit down early in the week and rework my plans.

  5. If I have j Ross (donut) as emergency and n answerth 71 as emergency , which ones points will I get if I have Hayes on the field ??

    1. Assuming Ross did not play, you’ll get Answerth’s score. If Ross DID play, but somehow finished the game on 0, then from memory I’m pretty sure you’d get his instead.
