SUMMARY

The arch rivals meet for the 255th time on Friday night and the stakes are high for both clubs seeking to register their first win of the season. Matthew Kreuzer’s profound influence around the contest was sadly missed against the Suns and his likely return, along with Matthew Kennedy, will be welcomed by Patrick Cripps and Ed Curnow, who battled manfully last Saturday. Kreuzer’s battle with Brodie Grundy, who starred against Greater Western Sydney, will be pivotal to the outcome. After a poor opening round performance against the Hawks, the Magpies’ effort against the Giants last Saturday was much more encouraging, but their injury toll continues to grow. The Blues are trying to find the right balance between attack and defence, leaking too many goals in the first two games. Too much was left to young gun Charlie Curnow last Saturday and he will need better service and support against the Magpies.

Thommo’s Tip: Collingwood by 6 points.

  2. I refuse to talk about his game. My parents taught me to never use the “C” word, let alone twice in the same sentence.

    Go Bombers !!

  5. What a horrible half of footy. Skills were terrible. Carlton are a rabble, Collingwood should be ahead by 10 goals.

  7. Gee murrays run and carry looks promising ! Showing why the pies got him.

But boy Carlton are playing bad. How long can they keep telling themselves and using the excuse of “rebuilding” or on a “journey” as they like to call it. Because im seeing the same old things they have dished up for years!

  8. Thoughts from me:

    – Garlett is so far off AFL level it’s not funny, feel very concerned about having Fogarty and Langdon (GWS) on my bench. Then again, Blues look terrible and Garlett probably won’t lose his spot.

Side note: I tipped the Blues tonight. Missed their game last week, thought they were half decent against the Tiges. Did I miss something last week?

    – I’ve paid close attention to Simpson since I almost traded Hibbo for him. Bloke gets a LOT of points for doing SFA – supercoach gods seem to have a lot of love for him.

    – Cripps getting a lot of the ball, but giving off a lot of handballs in tight. Thought he was worth more than 37 at HT.

    – Murray you superstar. Kid backs himself and looks great.

    1. I agree with most of what you say Dan.

Gartlett looks like he doesn’t have any confidence in his team mates, so is always about to run defensively.
Simmos 52 to HT seems about right to me. 10 possies, all on target, a couple of intercept marks and 2 tackles.
Murray can run and is a decent kick for the speed he’s running at. A couple of frees at the end of the qtr hurt a little.

      1. Yeah, I don’t disagree about the Garlett comment. That, and he doesn’t have all that much confidence in himself. Seen him free a few times in a promising position and doesn’t care to present. I might be too harsh on a rookie, but he doesn’t seem to have much of a footy brain. Runs to the wrong spots, looks very average.

Let’s hope Murray goes into the hundred.

        1. Garlett has previously been dropped for poor defensive pressure.

Considering it nearly cost him an AFL career, and it’s probably something his coaches are still pushing on him, playing a bit defensively is probably high on his mind.

At 65 SC points and after a bit of a shocker last week it isn’t too bad an outcome.

Sometimes coaching, and knowing that the coach will back you can make all the difference in the world.

Look at say Nick Holman or Sam Murray.

  9. One more thought to add. PDow might have some big promise but I’m just seeing him butcher the ball under pressure. Just not ready for AFL intensity yet. Glad I didn’t pick him in SC after all the pre season hype.

  10. The biggest winners of tonight’s game are the sponsors!! They would be licking their lips at the quality of centre bounces!!! You could easily add another one, maybe two commercials after every goal and we wouldn’t miss a thing!! Perhaps we should consider just throwing the damn thing up and ditch the bounce.

    9

    1
    1. Or the umpires could just learn to bounce it properly. They have been bouncing it for over 150 years without much trouble; it’s only in the last couple of years that people have started complaining.

  12. Any comments on how Cox is playing? Very low score, as bad as rd1?

6 touches and 4 marks plus 2 tackles at 100% DE sounds ok but he is only on 21?

    1. His played pretty well from what ive seen. Competed well in the air and played his role.

His just not a supercoach scorer. Lots of handballs as well rather than kicks after he marks it

      1. Cheers. Hopefully the scores will come.

Seems odd that his DT score his much higher than his SC even though he has 100% DE

  13. Now I realise that Murphy is a highly skilled player but how often does he influence a game? 99 sc points at 3/4 time but I haven’t really noticed him tonight.

    1. If Fasolo has a big game in the VFL, there’s every chance he’ll be in for Stephenson. De Goey and Elliot are still prob 2 weeks away, as for Wells, well who knows? Still a better pickup than Mayne though…

(PS – love your work FD)

      1. In the preseason it was publicized that Cox would play mostly forward. As long as that continues Grundy should score well.
