Game Chat – Carlton vs Sydney

Written by Thommo on April 29 2017

Venue: MCG at 2:10pm AEST

PAST FIVE TIMES

R18, 2016, Sydney 10.14 (74) d Carlton 10.8 (68) at the SCG
R2, 2016, Sydney 20.11 (131) d Carlton 10.11 (71) at Etihad Stadium
R9, 2015, Sydney 19.8 (122) d Carlton 9.8 (62) at the SCG
R17, 2014, Sydney 18.14 (122) d Carlton 7.9 (51) at the SCG
1SF, 2013, Sydney 13.8 (86) d Carlton 8.14 (62) at ANZ Stadium

Game notes: The powerful figure of spearhead Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin looms large in this contest as the Swans chase their first win of the season. Franklin has feasted on the Blues’ defence since moving to the Harbour City, booting 21 goals in four games against them. But Franklin will be hoping for better supply from up the field on Saturday than he has received this season. The win-less Swans have made their worst start to a season since 1993 and sit on the bottom for the first time since round 24, 1994. But they appear to have too much talent for Carlton. After being thrashed by Port Adelaide last week, the challenge for the youngsters in Brendon Bolton’s team is to put that behind them, with their leaders including skipper Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer needing to show the way.

Thommo’s Tip: Sydney by 15 points.

  2. I’m looking forward to seeing how Heeney goes. If he can average 90+ this year, then at his price he could be a sneaky upgrade option.

  4. Barring a 10-goal quarter from the Swans, I think I’m going to have to rethink my assessment of where they are at; as a Carlton fan, I was honestly expected us to get mauled today.

  6. Is Fisher playing Pickett’s role today? It seems like whoever gets put into that small forward/hff role for Carlton produces absolutely putrid SC scores.

    1. I’m listening to the game, and it sounds like Fisher is playing deep forward?

Awful role in a not so great team.

He needs to be up on the wing.

I tossed all week between Fisher and Hardwick – and looks like I went the wrong way (by a fair margin)!!

      1. Gave it a thumbs up only because I’m feeling your pain… I made the same decision on Fisher over Hardwick and Balic! Ah regrets.

  7. Yet another instance of a player being out cold on the field and the umpires letting the play continue. I’m almost always opposed to rule changes, but this really needs to be fixed.

Anyhow, I hope Rohan is okay.

  9. For those of us who listed to the ABC radio broadcast, thumbs up if you picked up on the (subtle) Star Wars reference at the end.

  11. Shocker. Forget finals, they’re flat out avoiding the spoon playing like this.

Well played Carlton. Simpson and Doc were everywhere!
