Game Chat – Collingwood v Essendon

Written by Motts on April 25 2019

Where and when: MCG, Thursday April 25, 3.20pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 16, 2018: Essendon 9.8 (62) defeated by Collingwood 12.12 (78)

In a low-scoring contest, Essendon led the Pies by one point at three-quarter time before being overrun in the final quarter. It was Jordan De Goey who turned the game the Pies’ way with three goals in the second half.

What it means for Essendon: It would be a huge fillip for the Bombers if they could overcome the Pies in the biggest home and away game of the season. After a sluggish start to the year, Essendon is on a roll, winning three games in a row and has averaged 18 goals in that patch.

What it means for Collingwood: The Pies cut through Brisbane last week, blitzing the Lions by 62 points at the Gabba. They looked at their best: quick, slick and dangerous up front, and would see this as a chance to beat a team that is gathering some hype.

How Essendon wins: John Worsfold’s side is an attacking force when playing on instinct, so must continue to go for it. An ability to win the centre clearances, led by an in-form and cashed up to the eyeballs Dylan Shiel who was super in that area against North last week, will also be crucial.

How Collingwood wins: The Magpies’ midfielders have dominated against Essendon in recent years, with onballers Adam Treloar, Steele Sidebottom, (now Crow) Paul Seedsman, Dane Swan and Scott Pendlebury all winning the Anzac Medal since 2011. If the Pies take advantage of Brodie Grundy’s likely strength in the ruck, they will be hard to stop.

The stat: Collingwood holds the edge over the Bombers in recent clashes, winning four of the past five Anzac Day meetings.

The match-up: Mason Cox v Michael Hurley/Cale Hooker

The AFL Player Ratings rank Pies target Mason Cox as the 18th-best key forward in the game (and overall No.174 in the AFL), but he continues to be dangerous in the air. Will it be Michael Hurley (ranked 173) or Cale Hooker (ranked 140) as the Bomber tasked to stop him?

It’s a big week for: Joe Daniher

The Bombers’ spearhead came into the side late last week and kicked two goals against the Roos. How will he back up after his first game in a year and on a short break? He has shown he likes this stage before, having won the Anzac Medal in 2017.

Big call: Brodie Grundy to be best afield with more than 40 hitouts and two goals.

Mottsy’s Tip: Collingwood by 25 points

      1. IMO Greenwood will take Zerrett and Myers will take Pendlebury.
IMO Collingwood will have enough ball getters to compensate, and I tend to believe they will make it even harder to get the ball in a Zerrett direction.

        But that’s just an old man’s assessment…………

    1. Don’t panic AS.
Ok it probably means less chance of a wooden spoon, but on the bright side, more chance of loosing another grand final….LOL (IMO Geelong)

  1. History shows Collingwood win 3 in a row after every Essendon win over the last century. I hope today that sequence stops

  2. Didn’t someone (Adam?) mention Collingwood having only conceded one 120+ score for the season at some stage?

    1. Yes it was me and still is the case.

      120+’s:
      Collingwood:
      For: 9
      Against: 1

Also they score the most and concede the fewest SC points.
      Avg for= 1777 (1st)
      Avg against= 1524 (18th)

  3. Zerrett has learned to cope and doesn’t do too bad with tags now. The battle is forward kicking accuracy. De Goey is the man to worry about for us. Go Bombers!!!!

    1. GB

      Could easily average 100 / 105

But…not much chance of a 110+ ave for me.

Still plays a little too outside, really needs get a heap of the footy or kick a few goals to go big.

There’s better choices at his price for me.

    2. His kicking efficiency (again today) is crap. I won’t be picking him. No wonder they’re tagging Zerrett.

      1. And that last minute turnover with options everywhere, cost them the game. Not bad at SC scoring tho’!

    1. yep mate – disgusting bias against Bombers in the umpiring … cost them in the end … disgusted!!

  9. I will precede this by saying i barrack for Richmond, umpires you are a disgrace absolute disgrace.

    10

    2
  10. Yea I’m not content with that level of umpiring. I don’t lightly blame umpires either. Some of these non decisions we still would of had to manufacture a goal in a low scoring game so I’m not saying we should of won. Bombers did mix it against a good team tho

    1. Had almost no impact at all in the last quarter when the game was on the line… pretty simple concept really.

      7

      3
      1. rubbish – he gathered possessions and also intercepted balls / spoiled balls etc that should be counted as 1% … it was biased scoring against … there is no way his score can or should have gone backwards in that last quarter … the more closely I watch matches these days (first year with Fox so able to watch most games) – the more clearly you can see the bias in scoring towards various players … its a disgrace.

        4

        6
    2. They lost?

If extra points were allocated for the whole game, prior to the final whistle , I believe they take those points from Essendon players in general, mainly those that have made errors / clangers late in the game.

On the flip side, those that have done great things late in a close game get rewarded.

      How they work that out…..

      Who really knows.

  12. Bombers killed them since half time, but hard to beat Collingwood and the umpires that was a joke!

    7

    5
    1. The umpiring was in your favour from a neutral’s perspective. So many frees not paid (tackles with prior) to Pies. Yet thought the Bombers got some cheap ones.

      15

      14
      1. Oh come on, allsaints!

I’m also a neutral supporter, but the absence of CLEAR free kicks SEVERELY curtailed Essendon’s chances.

There will always be missed frees, but these were FLAGRANT in their negligence at the Don’s expense.

        15

        7
        1. spot on GD! The last one that wasn’t paid, then was paid to Pies was an absolute joke. Even the commentators on many occassions throughout the match were dumbfounded. There were so many clear frees not paid it was a joke.

          10

          1
          1. Am a neutral supporter as well, but thought the umpiring was horrible for both teams. The goal for Essendon at the end was clearly not a holding the man as they were both holding each other although there were a couple missed calls on tippa being unlucky. I just don’t think fans can say umpires won Collingwood the game.

            14

            2
  13. I absolutely admire pendles but he did a back somersault that would have bought criticism to ben brown!

    9

    6
  14. So the 2nd last goal the bombers got thru a free kick wasn’t obscene…. yes umpiring was discraceful but free kicks were missed for both sides

    12

        1. Ignore Mrs Hore.

Its a just a sad man, that likes to dress up like Barry Humphries.

          Sad really.

          1. Oh possum (and others)….do lighten up. There are some very, very, serious things going on in the world, and this debate is NOT one of them. The umpiring from yesterday is….my boy is actually a bombers supporter and has locked himself in his bedroom…what do I tell his coaches when they ring and ask why he isnt at training ?

Anyway, I think I should save a few people from bursting their woosher valves…..I will go back to knitting booties for my grandchildren…….I have 17 of them…that will keep me busy with winter coming on.

I wont be posting anymore…UNLESS my son cops it again.

            So…you have a free hit…go for it.

            2

            2
  15. Doesn’t matter what happens , umpires never have to answer for their poor performance, no one from afl would admit they made mistakes.
We can dismember players and coaches for poor performance but don’t criticize umpires.

    5

    1
    1. they should adopt NRL policy this year and review and drop umpires (i think this does occur? … but NRL much stronger on this now) … and also come out publicly and admit where the mistakes have occurred – doesn’t help the team that loses a match for it though …

      10

      1
      1. Its not about the team that loses the match, of course we cant change the result. its about taking ownership and responsibility so that the next team doesn’t loose with the same circumstances.

        2

  16. Great Anzac Day game. Collingwood a deserved winners. I wished the umpiring was even, but I am sure they are just humans

    11

    7
    1. nah mate … that was bad today … for me, clear bias against the Bombers … I support, and consider myself a fair caller … prefer to see a good game of footy no matter who wins … but today, those calls (or in many cases non calls) cost bombers significantly … they were better side from late in second quarter and did not get the calls or even the CD scoring …

      6

      11
    2. They get paid to umpire, they dont do it for fun. Its their JOB!
IF they arent doing their job correctly, they should get the sack like every other employee does.

  17. Should I loophole Grundy as Captain or wait for Lachie Neale’s score against Gold Coast?

    T/U: Use Grundy’s VC Score
T/D: Leave Lachie Neale as captain

  18. The ground was encapsulated by bad sportsmanship today and it is even spilling over onto here. Did you see the look on the distinguished soldier that was about to hand over the Anzac day medal.
    Embarrassed for all concerned.

    1. I am a passionate Essendon fan and was there yesterday. I gotta say two things.

      1. Even the Collingwood supporters around me were wondering about the umpiring decisions, especially late. That last one not paid before the free to Brown was a shocker, but its debatable whether the result would have been different if it was paid. The Bombers lost it in the first quarter….we actually won the next three.

      2. I’m appalled at the booing. I remember saying to my son when he cracked it after losing a tennis match, “if you can’t handle losing, dont play…someone has to lose”. It wasn’t Pendles fault….probably my fav non bomber over the past decade or so. I really think however that the booing was a result of the umpiring, and not personal.

      15

  19. I barely post..but the umpires.. its not the ones they pay but the ones they dont… surely on a game as big as this, where the players are interpeting the game better than the umpires, something must be done. #wathappendtomygame

    Sorry for the ramble

    1. Great neutral comment. There was a moment in the second qtr when an essendon player laid a perfect tackle and the pies player dropped the ball….every player in the vicinity on both sides stopped as they new it was a free…except the umpire was madly waving play on for a couple of seconds till the players did.

      1

  20. Cry me a river ? Collingwood was in front for 100% and would have been an injustice to lose. Ess lost it in the first qtr. there own fault. To boo Pendleton was disgraceful in the context of Anzac day. Buckley was right in what he said, gave those ess supporters a quick direct, clip for their behaviour

    2

    6
    1. Yep, those always gracious collingwood supporters, none who ever booed an essendon player during the drugs fiasco (not too mention O’keefe and the other bloke in NZ), even though it wasn’t the players fault, are righteously outraged.

  21. In the words of the coodabeen champions…
free kicks are like hemorrhoids, it’s not so much how many you get, it’s where you get them
