Game Chat – Collingwood v Essendon

Written by Motts on August 23 2019

Where and when: MCG, Friday August 23, 7.50pm AEST

What it means for Collingwood: A chance to finish as high as third if both West Coast and Richmond lose. A defeat could result in a cut-throat clash with the white-hot Western Bulldogs.

What it means for Essendon: Win and the Bombers will almost certainly remain seventh and face an away elimination final against Greater Western Sydney; lose and they will play an elimination final against either the Pies or perhaps even Richmond or West Coast.

The stat: The Magpies have won their past three encounters with the Bombers, restricting them to an average score of just 61.

The match-up: Adam Treloar v Dylan Shiel

The former Greater Western Sydney teammates might well square off at stoppages, where it will be a battle between the game’s most prolific ball-winner Treloar and the second-ranked Bomber.

It’s a big week for: John Noble

The Pies’ mid-season recruit has played two AFL games and both have been road trips to Perth and Adelaide, so he finally gets his first opportunity to play in front of a big crowd at the MCG. But don’t expect the occasion to faze the speedy little man, who has made a strong start to his career.

Big call: Essendon coach John Worsfold will become animated on the sidelines while Collingwood counterpart Nathan Buckley watches on with apparent indifference.

  1. Oof. No Hooker, no Zaharakis, no Heppell, no Stringer and no Fantasia. No way the Dons get up here.

If they do, they deserve to be playing finals.

    1. Last 3: 123, 86, 121 (110 avg)

      Last 3 against Essendon: 134, 155, 113 (134 avg)

      Last 3 at MCG: 86, 121, 117 (108 avg)

I’ve taken the VC off him, expecting an awkward 120~. Think Belly will be able to hold his own. Worst case scenario Grundy goes huge and I have to hope Whitfield or Dunkley/Macrae matche him.

      1. Grundy to dominate. Collingwood to play their hearts out for a possible top four. Bombers to play hard, but they know they won’t go much further.

        VC Grundy!!!

    1. Certainly smarter than me. Talked myself into not VC’ing Grundy and he’s already 20 points 7 minutes in. Here I was thinking Bellchambers would actually get a hit-out.

  2. I am such a f*cking fool. Overlooked Grundy yet again, and he’s on track for 200.

Honestly, half the blame has to go Bellchambers. Only the 2 hit-outs. Try jumping, you bum.

    1. Seriously man, I’m a bombers supporter and Tommy isn’t half the player Grundy is.

Even if TB got a few hit outs he had no chance around the ground

  3. I must admit I’m surprised Grundy scores so much in the first maybe Belly wakes up in the second. Treloar killing me it’s bad and it’s good … I’m torn!

  4. Bombers going down like nine pins…..just give it away boys…you showed what our reserves can do in q1….nothing to prove.
Is this the best pies can do ??

    1. BS scoring system … at work again. About 7 pies players were all credited +6 at the end, before the final siren … Merrett got a +3 showing and actually lost 2 points … I am so over this rubbish system .. considering giving it away for a year with just how rubbish it is …

      1. More points allocated to the winning side in comparison to the losing side as well as scaling to occur and potentially fixing any stats that were missed or incorrectly recorded earlier.

The shtick is getting old and tiresome in regards to constantly bemoaning the scoring system.

Possibly limiting the time spent refreshing/checking live scores would be beneficial for enjoying the competition.

        1. The ‘shtick’as you put it is not that Adam – it is valid … if you actually take on board what I have said … there is even a dedicated thread on the site now highlighting the inconsistencies or incorrectness of the system …

My points remain valid .. and many aside from me have commented, every week. Players are being awarded points that they do not earn, by the definition of the system … simply because one team wins or loses?? Or simply because they have not fully allocated an arbitrary scoring SYSTEM?? the key word is system … it is flawed and arbitrarily effects / impacts the results of matches (in the SC world)

Where does it say in the rules and scoring of SC that players are or will be entitled to be ‘scaled up’or down, based on the result of matches??

Where does it say that players, when points have been allocated early, won’t earn 4 points for an effective kick anymore? (and instead be given 1 or even none? … )

Last night, what prompted my comment, before the match had even finished, it was very clear on FF when suddenly with about 30 seconds left, many pies players instantly had a +6 appear on the scores … and at that precise point, Merrett (in this instance) had an effective possession … it showed +3, but he actually reduced by …

My comments remain, it is an extremely flawed scoring system that has no basis, in awarding valid points to players that they have actually earnt.

        1. please give yourself an uppercut so i dont have to read your crap every week you loser!
My comments are valid – it is a BS flawed scoring system whereby players are awarded points that they haven’t actually earned … or some players do not get points, that they have actually earned, by the actual system.

          1. Go play DT of AFL Fantasy if it pisses you off so much. Don’t repeat yourself week after week. It’s their game they can scale however much they want.

            1. Watch an AFL game and follow the SC scores simaltaenously. It’s a farce, David- Macca is right.
