Game Chat – Collingwood v Footscray

Written by Motts on April 12 2019

Where and when: MCG, Friday April 12, 7.50pm AEST

Last time they met: Docklands Stadium (now Marvel Stadium), round 10, 2018: Collingwood 13.12 (90) defeated Western Bulldogs 8.7 (55)

The Dogs scooted to a 26-point lead early in the second term and were still 18 points clear at half-time before the Pies piled on 8.9 to just 0.4 to climb into the eight, and that’s where they stayed. Adam Treloar was best-afield with 40 touches and two goals.

What it means for Collingwood: After being beaten by both Geelong and West Coast, the 1-2 Pies need to regain some equilibrium.

What it means for the Western Bulldogs: The Dogs unexpectedly dropped their game to Gold Coast so they need to get one back, and there are few bigger scalps than Collingwood at the MCG.

How Collingwood wins: The Pies’ multi-pronged attack, which features Jordan De Goey, Jamie Elliott, Mason Cox and Jaidyn Stephenson, should prove too hot to handle for the Dogs. Brodie Grundy should also dominate the ruck.

How the Western Bulldogs win: Consign the much-vaunted Magpie midfield to a third defeat in four games and that also means limiting Grundy’s influence.

The stat: The Pies have won just one of their past four games at the MCG. They have also succumbed to the Dogs in their past two clashes on the hallowed turf.

The match-up: Scott Pendlebury v Jack Macrae

When Dogs midfielder Macrae (ranked No.19 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) was drafted he was likened to Pies skipper Pendlebury (No.25), whom he has probably gone past in recent times.

It’s a big week for: Jordan Roughead

The Bulldogs’ 2016 premiership big man is thriving in his first season at Collingwood, where he is highly valued for his leadership, cool head and flexibility. In his first game against his old club he will match up on one of the Dogs’ rising stars in Aaron Naughton or Josh Schache.

Big call: The game’s shortest player, Bulldog Caleb Daniel, to find himself in another unenviable aerial contest in the goalsquare, this time opposed to the game’s tallest player, Magpie Mason Cox.

Prediction: Magpies by 30 points

  1. Final teams #AFLPiesDogs: Callum Brown replaces Dayne Beams (illness).

    No changes for the Dogs.

  2. Predictions for tonight.

Treloar to dominate with 2 goals and 35 touches.

Grundy to score a mammoth score, close to 180.

Macrae to be quiet by his standards and have a solid 105 game.

Libba to rack up 25 disposals but only score 80 points.

    Dunkley to find some form.

    Pies to win by 28.

    1. So do I. Dunkley and Grundy’s night.
Beams has a migraine. TECHTeam has Treloar but am not at home to put the V on him sadly. Might just go nuts tonight!

    1. Surely you have other, safer/better options for the C?!? V fine. It’s better than the V-line 🙂

  3. Well, there has been one interesting development so far: Caleb Daniel is still playing in defence, and still scoring well, even though JJ is back. Good signs for anyone who may be eyeing him off.

      1. Watching the game his barely in sight. On track for another 80 even with 40. If i wanted 80s from a guy i paid 516k for i would of started Worpel instead.

Also watching this game he aint getting a 60 point second half if nothing changes. Starting him was a huge mistake after not having him all pre season

  8. It’s been a not so pleasant looking game but great for us SuperCoaches as some of the players are scoring well. Unlike the two teams playing.

  9. Grundy VC looking solid for 150, while Macrae hopefully can crack 140. Hope Libba and Moore stay down however.

  10. It’s interesting how coaches don’t seem to rate Macrae. Never gets a tag & just keeps on racking them up.

    1. He’s similar to Titch in that he’s not very influential compared to Bontempelli or even Libba.

A real random game, crozier with a MOTY contender, dogs got running game going that quarter, Pies not looking dangerous off half back at all…..

    1. I so hate sideways trades…but, there are always exceptions. He’s hanging in by his dpp.
Its only two weeks since Heeney was a huge rage trade.

  18. What’s CD’s definition of a turnover? Darcy Moore supposedly had 8 but went at 75% de from 20 disposals…

      1. That makes more sense but super annoying as a Moore owner. Maybe also kickouts when he doesn’t leave the square can count as turnovers but not a kick?

  19. Hmm. Lloyd into macrae lol. At leased it wasn’t a disaster.
What’s the chances of my 2 captain options scoring the points?

  20. Surely dunkley’s time Is up! It’s going to take a lot of convincing or something drastic to happen, for him to keep his spot next week !

  21. Doggies never gonna win a game with being constantly killed in the ruck and playing a midget at full-back. Game plan needs work, Bevo.

    1. Daniel is playing the seagull role in the backline – like Jake Lloyd. He shouldnt be actually defending a player at all
